Review: Aliens/Vampirella

AliensVampiHCCover

Two iconic horror franchises collide, as Vampirella – the fan-favorite supernatural heroine – faces the most nightmarish creatures ever to appear in cinema: the Xenomorphs from Alien! As the first human colony on Mars digs deeper into the crimson soil, they discover the catacombs of a hibernating civilization, tens of thousands of years old. The evidence suggests that they are Nosferatu, an ancient and sinister species that Vampirella is all too familiar with. Called to the Red Planet to investigate, the monster hunter and her human allies find a chamber with hundreds of ellipsoidal, leathery eggs… and after they hatch, the true horror begins. In space, no one can hear Vampirella scream!

Aliens/Vampirella is a surprising blend of characters to pit against each other. The underground martian city built by the Nosferatu is an oddly brilliant choice to add to it all especially as the comic reveals how the Nosferatu got to Mars, and why they left earth. Unfortunately, there’s something else that’s unexpected, a Xenomorph egg. That is the beginning of the end for their civilization. Yet in a way, it’s the beginning of this tale, as humanity discovers their city and the cycle is repeated.

Much to my surprise, the art is more science fiction influenced than the horror I expected given the two title characters. Which oddly works well, given the nature of the story. You don’t see much of the martian landscape, which is a slight shame I think. Between the Nosferatu and humanity, the changes would make for an interesting sight. Setting that aside, the action is well drawn, and doesn’t skimp on the blood.

Review: Aliens/Vampirella #1

AliensVampi01-Cov-A-HardmanThe quest for a good story is what drives all readers and writers to buy books, comics and magazines by the truckloads every year. As the human mind, yearns for distraction and entertainment, and with so many avenues to get to it, the possibilities are infinite. Through it all, comics have stood the test of time, ultimately proving that it will be the premiere medium for storytelling. Case in point, this event series, Aliens/Vampirella, from Dynamite Entertainment and Dark Horse Comics, is a story that only could have existed in comics.

As the only time that Vampirella, made it to the silver screen, it was box office flop, back in the 80s, coming of more like a running joke. While, the many incarnations that Aliens, have existed on the big screen, have yielded mixed results. So no matter how good this story sounded, this would have never made it as a movie. Thankfully, for comics’ readers, this story has perfect execution and gorgeous art.

The comic opens up with Vampirella, being sent to a base colony on Mars, to handle the threat from the Aliens, who have been hunting vampires. She is assisted by the base colony staff, where she finds a trail of vampire bodies sodomized by the Aliens and a nest of alien eggs. Before long, Vampirella and the base colony staff are attacked by those famous Alien parasites form the Alien movies. The first issue ends with a re-creation of one of the most iconic movie scenes of all time

This first issue is a nice start to what seems like what would be a very interesting miniseries. The story by Corinna Bechko, is off to a great start, melding the two worlds into one, and what looks almost like the Batman Vs Aliens series, in the best ways. The art by Javier Garcia-Miranda, pops off the pages and feels as though it was meant to be animated. Overall, a solid first issue in what promises to be what everyone loves about alternate history in the tradition of Marvel’s What If?!.

Humans have begun to colonize Mars, but something ancient and sinister got there first. Now Vampirella is faced with a mystery only she can solve, and the bloody realization that some monsters should never be awakened.

Writer Corinna Bechko says, “I’ve loved Alien since I first saw it as a kid on a crummy old TV in a well-lit room and got scared half to death anyway. Now that I have the chance to add a little corner to that universe I couldn’t be happier. And pitting such an implacable horror against Vampirella? That’s a meeting that definitely produces very fertile story-telling ground. The Alien franchise has always thrived with strong women in the lead. Smart, self-assured Vampirella is a joy to write for, even when she may have met her match.”

Dynamite Reveals the Full Creative Team for Aliens/Vampirella

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the full creative team for Aliens / Vampirella, the upcoming horror crossover between their classic comic book heroine an the Xenomorph monsters from Dark Horse Comics‘ long-running comic book, based on the renowned film series. Corinna Bechko will steer the series with her scripts, while artist Javier García-Miranda will provide the atmophere and action. Also, artist Gabriel Hardman will provide the distinctive covers worthy of the tradition of horror excellence that both long-standing terror icons represent.

As established in Aliens / Vampirella #1, humans have begun to colonize Mars, but something ancient and sinister got there first. Vampirella, a supernatural exterminator, is faced with a mystery only she can solve… and the bloody realization that some monsters should never be awakened.

Bechko has been writing comics since her horror graphic novel Heathentown was published by Image/Shadowline in 2009. Since then, she has worked for numerous comics publishers including Marvel, DC, Boom, Dark Horse, and Dynamite on titles such as Planet of the Apes, Star Wars: Legacy, Savage Hulk, and Invisible Republic. Her background is in zoology. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and a small menagerie.

Javier García-Miranda is a relative newcomer to the comic book industry, but has been making waves with his work on several Dynamite horror titles. He has illustrated Aliens / Vampirella‘s raven-haired heroine before as part of the anniversary Vampirella #100 celebration. In addition, García-Miranda chronicled the fall and resurrection of Chaos! Comics’ resident bat-winged villainess in the Purgatori miniseries, and worked on Dynamite’s premier bad boy in Evil Ernie (Vol. 2) #6.

Gabriel Hardman, cover artist for the entire Aliens / Vampirella series, is a prolific creator in the comic book industry, plus a frequent contributor to the film industry. A comic book writer and artist, he has worked on such titles as Kinski, Invisible Republic, Star Wars: Legacy, Planet of the Apes, and Savage Hulk. He also served as storyboard artist for the films Inception, Interstellar, Tropic Thunder, and X2.

Aliens / Vampirella #1 will be shipping in September 2015.
