Review: The Last Space Race #1

It started as an anomaly. An outlier in the noise that’s so common in astronomical data. But the truth sends the United States-and the world-careening into what will become humanity’s LAST SPACE RACE.

Written by Peter Calloway, there’s a certain fun about Last Space Race #1 that takes a story we’ve seen a few different times and gives it a nice energy about it. Calloway’s story revolves around Sasha Balodis, a tech billionaire that feels like a less douchey Elon Musk. He’s Tony Stark with a space race fetish.

Now, that sounds like something we’ve seen before but Calloway gives Balodis some depth that’s unexpected. The story could be pure Top Gun cockiness with a rich guy when it comes to attitude but Calloway hints at tragedy in Balodis’ life that indicates there’s more to him than what we mainly see. How that plays out should be interesting and intriguing and set the series apart.

The art by Alex Shibao with colors from Natalia Marques and lettering by Marshall Dillon is solid. The designs is excellent with each character looking unique and a technology and world that feels familiar. It’s a smart idea of design in that it allows the reader to connect a bit more than if it were set a decade in the future and things were much more different. Shuttles like similar to what we have in real life with slight tweaks, same with space suits. A familiarity of it all helps.

At its core, the comic is something we’ve seen before but it’s the fun attitude of it all that makes it entertaining. There’s just something about the interactions and characters that deliver a first issue that has you wanting to come back. It feels like when actors have fun in their roles which makes what you’re watching more entertaining. Now, to see if it can really differentiate itself. It has the opportunity to go a wide range of ways. And, with what’s hinted at, there should be some emotional depth to what’s to come. And if done right, this could wind up being one hell of a series.

AfterShock Announces The Last Space Race from Peter Calloway and Alex Shibao

It started as an anomaly. An outlier in the noise that’s so common in astronomical data. But the truth sends the United States—and the world—careening into what will become humanity’s LAST SPACE RACE.

Leading the effort for the United States is one man, Sasha Balodis. A fun-loving tech billionaire turned aerospace titan, Sasha’s seemingly perfect life has been gripped by recent tragedy. Building and launching the most expensive, most ambitious and most important project in history—well, it gives him something to live for again.

There’s only one thing standing in his way: his arch-rival and chief aerospace competitor, Roger Freeman.

Written by Peter Calloway and drawn by Alex Shibao, The Last Space Race is an imaginative investigation into wonder, hope and humanity’s grandest purpose.

The Last Space Race #1 is out October 9th featuring colors from Natalia Marques, lettering by Marshall Dillon, and covers by Shibao and Marques as well as Juan Doe.

Review: Independence Day #4

Cover A ID 4With new secrets arising and the threat of extinction looming over the submarine crew, Adams is left with an impossible choice that could spell redemption for his comrades… or their total demise.

With one issue left after this, Independence Day #4 ramps things up. A strange vision haunts the marine captain, as it reveals the alien race’s plan. Writer Victor Gischler keeps the alien plan is simple, if not genocidal to humanity. Will humanity stop them, or will the aliens succeed in issue #5?

The brief psychic vision between the lead alien and the marine captain is well done by artist Alex Shibao. The imagery manages to reveal some of the aliens origins, and the aliens plan. There’s also some interesting work with the coloring. For example, the subtle shift of blue to purple in the opening credits is simple, but well done.
