Roots of Madness #1

(W) Stephanie Williams (A) Letizia Cadonici (C) Alessandro Santoro (L) AndWorld Design

At the turn of the 20th century, a young Black woman named Etta picks up the tradition of her late mother for creating special medicines using natural ingredients and secrets handed down from generation to generation. Her mother has passed on a book of recipes and formulas, but it’s also full of strange symbols and dark musings that she doesn’t quite understand.

Within her community, one of the problems she hopes to fix is counteracting the poisonous and abrasive solutions Black women and girls are sold for straightening their hair. So, when the Meridian Fellowship reaches out and offers her a spot at their institute in Savannah, GA, to use their facilities to do her research, Etta jumps at the chance. She packs up her mother’s book and heads to the sprawling establishment, but what she finds is a place surrounded by natural wonders that may point the way to understanding the more mysterious parts of her mother’s work…if dark forces don’t claim her first.

Inspired by the life of Madame CJ Walker, this alternate history combines tradition with cosmic horror for something truly modern and unique.

Mine Is A Long Lonesome Grave #1 mixes the supernatural with a gritty story of revenge

Mine Is A Long Lonesome Grave #1

Harley Creed is a bad man. He used to be worse. A violent ex-con with a string of brutal crimes in his past, he only wanted one thing when he finally walked free from prison: to leave Briar Falls, WV, behind and disappear forever. But Harley’s hometown has a strange way of swallowing people whole-call it a consequence of the low-level folk magic that has permeated its darker corners for generations. And now that Harley has returned, pent-up vengeance for his past crimes is about to come roaring back. Somebody has put a hex on him-and Harley has seven days before he dies in twisted, screaming agony. Mine Is A Long Lonesome Grave #1 is an interesting debut that mixes a tale of revenge with the supernatural for a result that keeps you on your toes.

Written by Justin Jordan, Mine Is A Long Lonesome Grave #1 is an intriguing debut. It’s a mix of genres but at its heart, it’s a tale of revenge. Jordan introduces an interesting character in Harley Creed, a man who is mean, violent, and one we shouldn’t be cheering for. He’s just bad. But, Jordan impressively gives us just enough to feel a little sorry for him. A violent criminal, he’s freed from jail and wants to do a minimum in correcting his past while also getting the hell out of dodge. He’s done his time and haunted by his past… literally. And like so many stories of the type he keeps getting pulled back in. And back in he is with over the top violence emphasizing this is a guy we really shouldn’t be rooting on but at the same time, you can have empathy because it’s clear he wants to live a quiet life now.

Chris Shehan‘s art is solid with a great balance of the supernatural, horror, and gritty revenge tale. With color by Alessandro Santoro whose palette delivers a bleak feel and lettering by Micah Myers, the comic nails the vibe it’s going for. The visuals deliver the feel of a man broken down and tired and the choices really emphasize the horror aspects at times leaving readers to imagine the violence being inflicted. But, what’s interesting is even with the supernatural aspects, the visuals still feel grounded. There’s a vibe that reminds me of The Blair Witch in that it mixes the every day with something a little spooky, all mixed with a color palette that reminds you of the fall and the withering that comes with that period of time.

Mine Is A Long Lonesome Grave #1 is a solid read. If you like noir/revenge type stories, then it can be enjoyed just for that. If you like supernatural, there’s that aspect as well. The combo together create a debut that has you wanting to see what’s next and the horrors to come.

Sesame Street #1 is a cute comic young kids will enjoy

Sesame Street #1

Stroll along Sesame Street and join Grover, Elmo, Cookie Monster, and more of your favorite furry friends in this brand-new comic book series for readers of all ages! Grover wakes up to another beautiful day on Sesame Street! But he soon discovers that his friends each have a problem to solve before they can enjoy it. In this debut, Grover does what he does best: lends a helping hand. After all, the most fun on Sesame Street comes from working together! Sesame Street #1 is a cute debut that young readers will enjoy.

When I was growing up, Sesame Street as a whole wasn’t something I was in to. While other kids knew Big Bird, Oscar, and so many more, I was watching Pinwheel. It wasn’t until my daughter was born that I watched a lot of episodes, and even then, she wasn’t into it much either. So, my experience with the characters is limited through directly watching the show but it’s still a world I know. The one thing I do know though is The Monster at the End of This Book. It’s one we’ve read as a family over and over. Sesame Street #1 reminds me a lot of that story in its pacing and tone.

Joey Esposito does a solid job of capturing the magic of Sesame Street and its characters. The story is perfect for young children as it not only entertains but also includes solid lessons for them to learn. Like many of the episodes of Sesame Street that I’ve watched, the comic focuses in on one character’s experience then expands that out. Here, a beautiful day gets Grover on the move where he discovers it’s not a good day for everyone and decides to help everyone with their troubles. It’s a story and concept that’s hard to not want to put it in the hands of kids who are just starting out reading.

The art by Austin Baechle captures the expected look of the characters and world. Baechle is joined by Alessandro Santoro on color and lettering by Shawn Lee. What’s interesting is the lettering is closer to what you’d see in comics for adults and not blown up in size or cut down in words to make it easier for kids to read. There’s slight adjustment it looks like for the audience but it’s not as noticeable as it is for other comics squarely for kids. Still, it’s a good comic for kids to read that’s also a good introduction to comics.

Sesame Street #1 is a solid debut that’d be a good introduction to comics for young readers who’ve never experienced them before. The story feels like something you’d see on television with a familiar setup and most importantly lessons for kids about helping others and problem solving. It’s a cute start that’s a warm welcomed return of the beloved characters to comics.
