Star Wars: Shadow of Maul sets up the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord animated series

One of the most feared villains of the galaxy far, far away returns next year in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, a new animated series set after the events of the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In March, Marvel Comics will pave the way for the Disney+ series with Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, a five-issue prequel series written by Benjamin Percy, who wrote the Sith Lord in last year’s Star Wars: Darth Maul – Black, White & Red series, and drawn by Madibek Musabekov, known for his acclaimed work on the recent Star Wars: Jedi Knights series.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will reveal Maul’s plan to rebuild his criminal syndicate on Janix, a planet untouched by the Empire. Star Wars: Shadow of Maul introduces this new setting and cast, including Captain Brander Lawson and his partner, a droid nicknamed Two Boots, as they investigate shadowy dealings on Janix.

Welcome to Janix, a neon-lit, shadow-soaked maze of a planet that lies beyond the reach of the Empire. Captain Brander Lawson is doing his best to navigate the law in a lawless territory. He’s joined by his partner, a droid nicknamed Two Boots, as they face off against scheming crime bosses…and as the looming threat of the shadow lord, Maul, nears!

Now and forever, Jean Grey is Phoenix in Phoenix #1 variant covers

In the X-Men’s upcoming From the Ashes era, Jean Grey takes to the stars to fulfill her divine destiny in Phoenix, a new ongoing series by writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Alessandro Miracolo. Fans can see all the covers that will grace the highly anticipated debut issue, hitting stands on July 17.

Earlier this week in Rise of the Powers of X #5, one of the final issues of the X-Men’s Krakoan Age, Jean Grey was dramatically reborn as the Phoenix and promptly saved all of existence from an all-consuming AI Dominion. It was a battle outside of time and space that will go down in Marvel Comics history, and only a taste of the awe-inspiring feats that Jean will continue to achieve in her new solo series. Reigniting suns, suppressing black holes, taking on the likes of Gorr the God Butcher and Thanos’ Black Order singlehandedly, and teaming up with fellow space-faring heroes like Nova, Corsair, and Captain Marvel—Jean is no longer the Earth-bound X-Man you knew; she’s the Phoenix, now and forever! Glorious adventures await, but while the galaxies beckon Jean for salvation, will they also be reminded of her appetite for destruction?

Phoenix #1’s variant covers include breathtaking pieces of Jean by industry superstars like Rose Besch, Greg Land, Aka, and Peach Momoko. And like many of Marvel’s major launches, Phoenix #1 will have a fiery Foil Variant Cover—drawn by the legendary Joe Quesada.

Jean Grey fulfills her cosmic destiny in Phoenix #1 variant covers

In the X-Men’s upcoming From the Ashes era, one of the team’s most crucial members goes solo! Announced last week, Jean Grey will become a galaxy-traversing super hero in Stephanie Phillips and Alessandro Miracolo’s Phoenix. Emerging from the explosive finale of Krakoa with renewed purpose, Jean embraces what was always hers: the breathtaking power of the Phoenix Force. Alone in space, she not only must do what no one else can: she yearns to. Whatever Jean does – or fails to do – will bring darkness to the universe and haunt her in ways she can scarcely imagine…

Today, fans can see her reborn on an assortment of new variant covers for the debut issue!

Best-selling cover artists Aka and Rose Besch spotlight Jean’s new Phoenix costume, designed by series artist Miracolo. Both pieces will also be available as virgin variant covers. In addition, Greg Land reminds readers how terrifying the Phoenix can be with an incredible depiction of Dark Phoenix.

Check out all three covers now and preorder Phoenix #1 at your local comic shop today! It arrives July 17.

Peach Momoko’s Ultimate X-Men #1 gets a trailer!

Marvel‘s bold new Ultimate line is in full swing with readers still buzzing about Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto’s Ultimate Spider-Man #1 and Bryan Hill and Stefano Caselli’s highly-anticipated Ultimate Black Panther #1 hitting stands next week. The excitement increases tenfold in March when renowned writer and artist Peach Momoko brings the Children of the Atom into this thrilling new storytelling landscape in Ultimate X-Men #1!

Set in Japan, Ultimate X-Men will star Hisako Ichiki, AKA Armor, a fan-favorite young X-Man who debuted in the groundbreaking Astonishing X-Men. When she discovers her unusual exoskeleton powers, the new Ultimate Universe’s Armor’s normal life is shattered as she becomes the first of a new generation of mutants! Witness the X-Men mythos like you’ve never seen before as Momoko blends the classic mutant metaphor with Japanese folklore and urban legends. The resulting saga infuses horror into the franchise’s trademark mutant origin stories as Armor must overcome her darkest fears in order to unlock her full mutant potential.

Behold the magic that awaits in the new Ultimate X-Men #1 trailer, featuring never-before-seen artwork including a new look at Maystorm, the Storm-inspired character who Momoko created for last year’s New Champions Variant Covers and who will debut within the series!

Ultimate X-Men is the third launch in Marvel’s new Ultimate line that was born out of Hickman and Bryan Hitch’s Ultimate Invasion series. The saga began with the Maker, one of the final survivors of the doomed Ultimate Universe, travelling back in time on a parallel Earth to create a world without heroes. He succeeded in preventing various iconic heroes from achieving their destiny and ruled this world in secret through various global factions.

Now, he’s vanished and a secret war has broken out across the planet to shape what will happen to his kingdom. Some want to control the world. Some want to free it. In Japan, new mutants emerge with no one to teach them. Who will step forward to guide the hated and feared?

NYCC 11 – First Thoughts

As always, I had an amazing time at a comic book convention.  While I go to check out the latest releases and the new talent in Artist’s Alley, it’s the friendships I’ve made that makes it worth it (sappy I know).  The 2011 New York Comic Con was fantastic and seemed about a quarter to 50% bigger this year than last.

While the floor was amazing, the convention rooms were a bit packed and there were quite a few panels I wasn’t able to get into (bummer).  Hopefully that gets fixed next year.  The people attending were fantastic with great costumes and attitudes that made it fun for everyone. The displays weren’t as impressive, I saw most at San Diego earlier this year.  But, I got to see my name on the cover of Archaia‘s Critical Millennium hard cover, I giggled every time I saw it.

Here’s the checklist of the thoughts on top of my head:

  • Always great seeing Charles Soule and Len Wallace (and Jessica), good friends and great talents.  I especially had fun sitting behind Charle’s table and selling some of his comics for a bit (27 and Strongman).  Also chatting with Drew Gaska as always was fun, some day we’ll figure out a time for a radio interview.
  • Fantastic to hang out with Chip “Cuddles” Mosher and get to know the comiXology crew.  They’re an upcoming tech company everyone should be watching.
  • I bumped in BOOM! Studios and Ross Ritchie and some of his team.  Such nice folks.
  • The CBLDF deserves your support people!  Get involved!
  • I still don’t get anime and manga but the GEN Manga folks were so nice.
  • I got to meet a great talent Palle Schmidt and can’t wait to spotlight him more.  So smart and interesting to talk to.  He opened my eyes on a few things I’ve covered with a better perspective.
  • The Reed Pop crew do an amazing job putting together shows.
  • Mel and Archaia, Filip and Top Cow are class acts, so happy to see them every show.

Best items I returned home with besides the stacks of comics and graphic novels to read…

  • A new guitar pic for Charles Soule‘s 27 in honor of the launch of the second volume
  • I finally bought show exclusives including Hasbro‘s Hulk and the Spidey/Fireman Mini-mate
  • I got Spidey Mega Blocks!
  • DC had one of the oddest promotions, a light up Kryptonite ice cube to promote Smallville.
  • I grabbed both AKA video games, such a creative promotion.

And that’s it for convention season for me…. until 2012.
