Ben, a struggling filmmaker, lives in Berkeley, California, with his girlfriend, Miko, who works for a local Asian American film festival. When he’s not managing an arthouse movie theater as his day job, Ben spends his time obsessing over unavailable blonde women, watching Criterion Collection DVDs, and eating in diners with his best friend Alice, a queer grad student with a serial dating habit. When Miko moves to New York for an internship, Ben is left to his own devices, and begins to explore what he thinks he might want.

Shortcomings is directed by Randall Park and written by Adrian Tomine, this film adaptation of Tomine’s graphic novel is only in theatres August 4th.

Randall Park is mainly known for his roles in shows like Fresh Off the Boat, WandaVision, and now Young Rock. He’s also directed a bit, mostly shorts and an episode of Fresh Off the Boat. Now, he’s stepping behind the camera to direct Shortcomings. The film is based on the graphic novel by Adrian Tomine who is the executive producer and screenwriter of the adaptation.

Shortcomings was originally released in 2007 after being serialized in issues #9 to #11 of Tomine’s Optic Nerve. The graphic novel is about a young Asian-American male in American society.

Ben Tanaka, the story’s protagonist, lives in Berkeley, California with his politically active girlfriend Miko Hayashi. Ben is uninterested in Miko’s participation in the Asian-American cultural community, but he possesses a wandering eye—specifically for Caucasian women. When Miko begins to resent what she interprets as a rejection of both her Asian heritage and of herself, she moves to New York, at which point Ben disastrously attempts to pursue the type of woman he feels he really wants.

imagesThis weekend, Drawn & Quarterly head to the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center for the 2013 edition of the Small Press Expo! The show runs from 11am to 7pm on Saturday September 14th and 12pm to 6pm on Sunday September 15. Tickets to SPX cost $10 for one day, and $15 for the whole weekend.

SPX 2013: Surprise Guests Adrian Tomine and Anders Nilsen

Small Press Expo has announced Adrian Tomine and Anders Nilsen as surprise guests to SPX 2013, to be held September 14 and 15. Adrian and Anders will be in addition to previously announced guests Seth, Jeff Smith, Raina Telgemeier, Lisa Hanawalt, Gary Panter, Liza Donnelly, Gene Yang, Congressman John Lewis, Rutu Modan, Peter Bagge, Ed Piskor, Dash Shaw, Liniers, Domitille Collardey, Frank Santoro, Farel Dalrymple and Michael Kupperman.

Making his second appearance in as many years, Adrian Tomine will be on hand to sign his latest release Optic Nerve 13. In June, Adrian was a guest of Michelle Obama at the White House for a reception honoring a cross-section of American artists, writers and historians.

Anders Nilsen will be at SPX debuting his latest book, Rage of Poseidon from Drawn & Quarterly, as well as signing his latest from Fantagraphics, The End, an expanded hardcover edition of his work published as part of the Ignatz Series with Coconino Press. As with last year’s, Don’t Go Where I Can’t Follow, The End deals with the death of Nilsen’s fiance.

Drawn & Quarterly will be at this weekend’s Small Press Expo and you’ll be able to fine them at booth W51-W54 in the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Rd. They’re bringing fresh-off-the-press copies of SPX guests Adrian Tomine’s New York Drawings and Chris Ware’s Multi-Story Building Model. In all, the publisher will have six authors signing at SPX, including Tomine, Ware, Daniel Clowes, Kevin Huizenga, Brian Ralph, and Dan Zettwoch.

SPX Hosts a Legendary Roster of Guests this Weekend

Small Press ExpoSmall Press Expo is this weekend and will feature a historic lineup of guests. SPX 2012 boasts a murderer’s row of talent, with an indie comix fan’s dream guest list featuring—for the first time ever at a single event—Chris Ware, Françoise Mouly, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, Daniel Clowes, and Adrian Tomine.

This legendary group of creators has collectively won fifteen Ignatz Awards since the festival prize was instituted at 1997’s inaugural SPX.  Among the nominees for the 2012 Ignatz Awards, Los Bros Hernandez are represented in three categories (Outstanding Artist, Outstanding Story, and Outstanding Series).  The 2012 Ignatz Awards will be presented Saturday at 9:30 P.M.

Limited edition posters by Chris Ware, as well as a tote bag of Daniel Clowes art designed by Alvin Buenaventura, will be available at the SPX Sales Table. There will be a special set of all of the posters, flyers, banners and program guide cover signed by the artists in an edition of 25, as well as a poster of the badges designed by Jaime Hernandez, also for sale.

In addition,  appearing at this years show are such honored guests as Michael DeForge, Lille Carre, Becky Dreistadt, Dean Haspiel, and Nick Abadzis.  Guests will be participating in a compelling lineup of programming taking place both Saturday and Sunday, featuring several “spotlight” sessions on individual creators, in addition to panel discussions and special presentations.

SPX is also pleased to announce that publishers NoBrow and Koyama Press will be making their first appearances at SPX 2012, joining longtime SPX participating publishers such as Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, and Oni Press in showcasing their latest and greatest books.

Small Press Expo announces the Enoch Pratt Free Library as the recipient of the 2012 SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program

The Small Press Expo (SPX) has announced the gift of $5000 in graphic novels to the Enoch Pratt Free Library of Baltimore, Maryland. In a ceremony held this past Tuesday in the boardroom of the main branch of the Pratt Library in downtown Baltimore, SPX Executive Director Warren Bernard presented CEO Dr. Carla Hayden and members of her staff with the books.

Dr. Carla Hayden commented on the gift:

We are so honored and delighted that Small Press Expo has chosen the Pratt Library as this year’s recipient of their Graphic Novel Gift. It’s important to emphasize that reading is fun. Sometimes students get so busy they forget that there’s more to reading than just school texts.

This years gift of over 240 books comprising 40 different titles were chosen by the Pratt Library Collection Management Department and will be sent out to all the branches in the system.

SPX would like to thank Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, Adhouse Books and Top Shelf for their aid in supporting this important program.

The SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program is an expansion of the philanthropic and charitable endeavors that are part of its corporate charter, and is in addition to SPX’s annual support to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The targets of this program are public and academic library systems in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area as selected by the Small Press Expo.

The goals of this new program are:

  • Facilitate the availability of graphic novels to readers of all ages utilizing public and school libraries.
  • Promote learning and literacy through the availability of graphic novels at local libraries.
  • Provide library systems with additional resources by which they can purchase graphic novels and comics.

This years special bookplate contains art by artist and illustrator Adrian Tomine, whose work graces the covers of The New Yorker. The special bookplate were placed on all of the books donated by SPX.
