Aspen Comics Brings Back Shrugged for “10 for 10”

As their second release in their tenth anniversary “10 for 10” initiative, Aspen Comics is returning to the world of Perspecta and their popular series Shrugged. Created by Michael Turner and Frank Mastromauro, Shrugged will feature a mix of both a returning and brand new art team.

You think you’re prepared, but you’re not. You’ve been decisive in your actions up to this point, but now things have been turned upside down. You feel you’ve conformed your mindset and are ready to accept what you’re about to experience, but you haven’t. That’s because Shrugged is back and ready to blow your mind!

Theo and his friends are entering their final year of high school, and even though Ange and Dev are still along for the ride, a host of new characters have joined in on the adventure! But, everything isn’t all fun and games this time around as an evil force has also returned and is preparing to silence those voices inside their heads…permanently. If you thought you knew what fear was, you haven’t seen anything yet!

According to the creator and writer Mastromauro the new volume has been a “long time coming” and he could be happier to be working on the series again.

When we created this series almost eight years ago, Michael [Turner] always had an idea for where he wanted the story to go after the first volume was completed. I’ve kept that idea in mind ever since for when we were able to get the series scheduled back into production and back into stores for the fans and readers. Now that Aspen’s ten year anniversary is here, I’m thrilled to have Shrugged return as a part of that celebration, and I’m looking forward to bringing Michael’s incredible vision to everyone to the best of my ability.

This newest volume of Shrugged will be written by Mastromauro and will pair up-and-coming Aspen newcomer Jonathan Marks with returning, veteran colorist Beth Sotelo. Volume one artist Micah Gunnell will also return to provide a special lead-in to the new art team for this new volume.

As with all of Aspen’s “10 for 10” releases, the publisher will be offering a host of incentives for retailers and fans alike, including the extremely affordable price of only $1 for the first issue, Shrugged #1. Aspen will also be offering a special Aspen Reserved Edition cover for Shrugged #1 featuring art by Marks and superstar colorist Peter Steigerwald. Fans who reserve this all new Shrugged volume with their local retailers will be eligible to receive the Aspen Reserved Edition of Shrugged #1.

Fans who collect all ten of Aspen’s “10 for 10” Aspen Reserved Edition #1 covers each month through their local retailer will be eligible to receive the full-size Aspen “Perfect 10’s” jam poster absolutely free.

In addition to the debut issue, Aspen is also offering an Aspen Reserved Edition cover for Shrugged #2 by Gunnell and Sotelo, along with a Shrugged #2 J. Scott Campbell Retailer Incentive cover. Aspen will be releasing more info on further Shrugged incentives and Aspen’s “10 for 10” soon.

Review – Dark Horse’s The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1, The Strain #10, B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #103: The Abyss of Time Part 1, B.P.R.D.; 1948 #4

The Black Beetle: No Way Out #1

the black beetle in no way out #1 coverBlack Beetle’s investigation of two local mob bosses is interrupted when a mysterious explosion murders them and a pub full of gangsters—taking out most of Colt City’s organized crime in one fell swoop. Who could pull off such a coup, and what danger might that murderous bomber do to Colt City and Black Beetle?

From the title alone, you know you’re in for some retro pulp adventure before you even pick up the cover. There’s the stylish cover to the throwback to classic adventure movies using “in” in the title. I went in expecting pulp fun and finished with a smile on my face. If you’re not a fan of those types of comics, you might skip this new series, but in doing so you’re depriving yourself of a modern classic comic.

There’s something mythic of the hero versus mob comic from yesteryear and Francesco Francavilla captures that in both story and look. With the Black Beetle you have a character who might seem like so many other street heroes of the sorts, and that’s ok. I’m a sucker for that sort of comic.

Many are trying their hand at throwback comics to the early days of the comic medium, and using many of the characters from then too, but Francavilla really captures the essence of those comics. They’re supposed to be campy fun, and Francavilla so far has avoided attempting to modernize such characters, which often doesn’t work. Instead we’re given that type of comic in it’s basic essence. There’s an innocence to it, and that makes it a blast to read.

The Strain #10

the strain #10 coverOn the offensive, Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his companions arm themselves and head deep below New York City to smoke out the leader of the vampire menace. But before they can enter his lair, they’re paid a deadly visit from the towering beast himself—the Master!

The series has consistently been one of my favorites since it’s debut. Instead of a quick vampire comic, where the plot is rushed and pandemic thrown to the side, the series has been a slow build, as much a thriller like Contagion as it is vampire story. A lot of what I’ve liked about the series is the focus on the human characters as they attempt to track down the cause and also deal with their home life. There’s emotion about their family and how this epidemic will affect them.

If you’re looking for a vampire comic that’s all action, this isn’t it. There’s a lot of detective work here and false arrests, details that add to the story and flesh out the world a lot more, making it believable. Add in snapshots of how others are dealing with this city falling apart, it all adds up to a great reading experience.

The art too is fantastic, with a frenetic look at time that fits the tone of the series. This particular issue is a bit predictable, but it’s just one slice of the bigger story which has been fantastic.

The Strain is currently being worked on to become a television series, so get in now, so you can say you knew about it before it hit the small screen.

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #103: The Abyss of Time part 1

bprd hell on earth the abyss #1 coverA group of agents enter an abandoned warehouse in Chicago, only to discover the site of a hundred-year-old magical ritual and an old Hyperborean weapon, which leads to shocking revelations about man’s prehistory and the legacy of the Ogdru Hem!

Taking place before Return of the Master, there’s clearly a bigger story that I’m missing. Has this stuff come up before in an earlier series? I have no idea as I’m relatively new to B.P.R.D. But, ignoring the fact I feel like I’ve entered a story and having missed something before, the story so far is pretty interesting.

I want to find out more about this Hyperborean weapon and how it ties in to events in the present time. The story isn’t the most engaging of recent volumes I’ve read, but it’s interesting none the less.

It’s a bit odd to go from this giant end of the world story to this one, but my guess is it’ll all tie in together. That’s the enjoyment of this volume, how it plays in to the bigger picture.

B.P.R.D.; 1948 #4

bprd 1948 #4 coverAll signs point to the mysterious element discovered in the desert as the source of the horrific monsters entering our world as Bureau agents hunt down the creature that started this chaos.

It’s the year 1948, throwing us back in time and away from modern events that’s currently shaking the B.P.R.D. world. For now four issues, we’ve got an entertaining story that isn’t quite a B-monster movie, but has hints at that sort of campy fun.

We’ve been guessing as to what the cause is to the giant monsters in the desert and what nuclear tests might have to do with it and here we get our answer. It seems to be a bit of a leap, but that’s part of the fun of this issue, we get arguments over the scenarios and cause of this phenomenon instead of just being asked to accept it. As a reader, we’re challenged to the cause.

We’ve got one issue to go in this series, so it’ll be very interesting to see how it wraps up, but as a whole, this volume has been a fun edition to the greater B.P.R.D. world.

Dark Horse provided Graphic Policy with a FREE copy for review

Epic Fantasy from Stjepan Sejic, Ron Marz and Top Cow in February

Longtime collaborators on numerous projects for Top Cow, Ron Marz and Stjepan Sejic are launching a new creator-owned graphic novel series in February 2013. Ravine is epic fantasy at its highest with dragons, magic, and political machinations, is set in the kingdom of Palladia, a world that Sejic has been developing for the past eleven years.

Ravine come from a desire by Stjepan to make a fantasy comic series that was a full-blooded fantasy tale with rich character development, layered, well-motivated villains, and a deeply detailed world. Anyone that has seen his artwork will know how much that setting was made for Stjepan to design.

The world is one where intrigue and power struggles have so dominated the lives of those who rule — royalty and religious leaders alike — that they are blind to the gathering forces that threaten all of them.

While the story, world, and characters are Sejic’s, Marz acts as scripter and editor. Both creators cite the nature of an epic fantasy as the reason for releasing the series as graphic novels rather than individual issues.

Marz has stated that the story kind of demands to be told in large chunks and read as one story instead of as parts. While it’s a bigger risk to release the project as a graphic novel collection and not serialized, Marz felt there was a bigger reward creatively by doing so.

Ravine: Volume One (DEC120509), a 160-page graphic novel for $14.99, will be released on February 13.

Zenescope Entertainment to Unleash Epic Grimm Fairy Tales Event

Zenescope Entertainment has announced plans for a major Spring/Summer event entitled Unleashed.  The massive release will include six separate mini-series and a total of 24 issues (some being oversized issues) that tie directly into the Grimm Fairy Tales Universe. The epic comic book event will delve directly into the world of horror monsters while following those with the skills to hunt them.  Grimm Fairy Tales Unleashed is the main seven issue mini-series that begins when hundreds of formerly trapped vampires, werewolves, demons and zombies are all released on Earth by a very powerful entity known as “The Being.”  Now, four separate monster hunters (who fans will get to know in separate “Unleashed” mini-series), must join forces along with Grimm’s kick-ass heroine Sela Mathers in order to stop them.

The five other mini-series will lead directly into Unleashed and follow the terrifying stories of the monsters that exist within the Grimm Universe.  These series are The Eternal (Vampires), The Unseen (Demons), The Hunger (Werewolves) and The Cursed (Zombies).  The fifth series entitled The Hunters: Shadowlands will follow those who are chosen to hunt these wretched creatures, including Zenescope’s reimagined Van Helsing.

The entire Unleashed event will run from April 2013 through September 2013 with the first issues available for order in the February edition of Diamond Previews coming out this week.
