BOOM! Studios and Blumhouse Productions have announced that Blumhouse has secured the film and television rights to James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera’s record breaking, award-winning, and global best-selling series Something is Killing the Children. Blumhouse is set to simultaneously develop the property as a live-action feature film and an adult animated television series, with the animated series to be adapted and executively produced by co-creator James Tynion IV, with fellow co-creator Werther Dell’Edera serving as Co-Executive Producer and visual development consultant.

BOOM! Studios’ Stephen Christy, along with James Tynion IV will produce the feature film, with Adam Yoelin and Mette Norkjaer serving as Executive Producers. Werther Dell’Edera will co-produce.

Tron: Ares continues to suffer a glitch tumbling 66.5% from its debut weekend and grossing $11.1 million domestically. It has grossed $54.6 million domestically after two weeks. Tron: Ares Slumps as the Leto Curse Continues

Tron: Ares

Tron: Ares won the weekend box office in what can only be described as a disappointment. The film opened in 4,000 theaters but grossed just $33.5 million. In 2010, Tron: Legacy opened with a little over $44 million with 3,451 theaters. Internationally, the film did even worse bringing in $27 million for a worldwide debut of $60.5 million. While Tron has always been a bit niche in audience, this performance has to wind up killing the property for a while.

The opening also continues a string of slumps for Jared Leto and is worse that 2022’s Morbius which opened with a little over $39 million. The folks behind Masters of the Universe should be shitting bricks now as Leto is playing Skeletor in the film which is in post-production.

Leto has had a string of misses:

  • Haunted Mansion – 2023 – $24.1 million debut, $117.4 million worldwide – Budget $150 million
  • Morbius – 2022 – $39 million debut, $167.5 million worldwide – Budget $75 million
  • House of Gucci – 2021 – $14.4 million debut, $153.3 million worldwide – Budget $75 million
  • Zack Snyder’s Justice League – 2017 – $93.8 million debut – $661.3 million worldwide – Budget $300 million
  • The Little Things – 2021 – $4.7 million debut – $30.8 million worldwide – Budget $30 million
  • Blade Runner 2049 – 2017 – $32.8 million debut, $277.9 million worldwide – Budget $150/$185 million
  • Suicide Squad – 2016 – $133.7 million debut, $749.2 million worldwide – Budget $175 million
  • Dallas Buyers Club – 2013 – $260,865 debut – $55.2 million worldwide – Budget $5 million

Beyond some high profile films where he was not the main draw, Leto has a spotty box office at best and if anything, seems to sink the movie’s gross. The profitability of the films just doesn’t seem to be there.

Roofman opened in second place with an estimated $8 million domestically and no international return.

One Battle After Another slipped to third place grossing $6.7 million to bring its domestic total to $54.5 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $83.5 million with a worldwide gross of $138 million.

Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie remained in fourth place with $3.4 million to bring its domestic total to $26.4 million. Internationally, the movie has grossed $19.5 million for a worldwide total of just under $46 million.

Soul on Fire debuted and rounded out the top five with $3 million domestically and no international gross.

In other comic related movies…

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie – Infinity Castle grossed $2.3 million domestically over the weekend and now its total is at $128.6 million. Internationally, the movie has grossed $519.4 million and now its worldwide gross is at $648 million.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps has grossed $274.2 million domestically. Internationally, it has grossed $247.6 million. Worldwide, the movie is at $521.8 million.

Superman is now streaming on HBO Max and airing on HBO. The movie stands at $354.2 million domestically and $261.8 million internationally. Worldwide, it stands at just under $616 million.

Smurfs at $31.1 domestically and $89.7 million internationally for $120.8 million worldwide.

On the edge of comic related films, The Toxic Avenger is at $2.9 million domestically, $462,155 internationally for $3.3 million worldwide.

MIND MGMT: NEW AND IMPROVED #1

FORT PSYCHO #1 (of 12)

Written by Matt Kindt
Art & Cover by Brian Hurtt

Ten years ago, the nation of Singapore sank into the Pacific Ocean. The underground terrorist network known as The Seven Seals took credit for the largest act of terror in human history. In the aftermath, the United Nations created a strike team of highly trained covert operatives with one mission: locate, identify, and eliminate The Seven Seals’ secretive leader.

The team’s clandestine affairs were to always remain in the shadows – until their final, explosive confrontation with The Seven Seals resulted in a large-scale tragedy too bloody to cover up and too tragic to ignore. Disgraced and disavowed by the governments that trained them, the world’s most dangerous secret agents have been convicted for their crimes and sentenced to serve time side-by-side in the one place capable of holding them: their old island headquarters, Fort Cyclone – now known in the media by the derogatory nickname “Fort Psycho.”

And that’s where the official story is about to go terribly, terribly wrong.

From master storytellers Matt Kindt (BRZKR, Mind MGMT) and Brian Hurtt (The Sixth Gun), MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE meets LOST on a tropical island paradise stocked with trained killers, secret betrayals, and the long-buried truth about the mission that brought them there. Always remember: There is nothing deadlier than an ally turned enemy.

One Battle After Another wins the weekend box office battle

One Battle After Another

The movie has gotten some very positive review, so it should be no surprise that One Battle After Another won the weekend box office. The film grossed an estimated $22.4 million domestically and $26.1 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $48.5 million. With a 96% critic rating and 85% average viewers, the film might do pretty well from word of mouth.

Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie came in second with $13.7 million domestically and $5.7 million internationally for a worldwide debut of $19.4 million. That domestic debut was more towards the lower end of projections but it’s a family and it could have a nice long run due to that.

The Conjuring: Last Rites came in third place with an estimated $6.9 million domestically to lift its gross to $161.5 million. Over the week, it grossed $25.6 million internationally to bring that to $274.4 million and a worldwide gross of $435.9 million.

The Strangers: Chapter 2 debuted in fourth place with $5.9 million domestically and no international gross reported.

Rounding out the top five was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie – Infinity Castle with an estimated $4.9 million to lifts its domestic gross to $115.9 million. Over the week it grossed $36.9 million internationally where it has now grossed $487.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $605.4 million.

Him Fumbles but Wins the Weekend Box Office

Him

Update: The adjusted box office was quite different from the initial report:

  1. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie – Infinity Castle – $17.3 million
  2. Him – $13.3 million
  3. The Conjuring: Last Rites – $12.3 million
  4. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale – $6.4 million
  5. The Long Walk – $6.2 million

Him opened up this past weekend taking the top of the box office, but also debuting with one of the worst openings of the year to top the box office. The film grossed an estimated $13.5 million. That’s the third lowest top of the box office this year, Novocaine holds that title with just $8.8 million. Flight Risk was second with $11.6 million. Internationally, the film grossed just $362,000 but that’s not shocking, it’s a football film which is very much an American sport still (though making pushes abroad). Worldwide, the movie grossed $13.9 million. The film’s budget is just $27 million, so it’s not a complete disaster yet but with brutal reviews from critics and a poor reception from the audience, this is one that might have to rely on its post box office to determine success.

The Conjuring: Last Rites held on to second place with just under $13 million to bring its domestic gross to $151.2 million. Internationally, the movie grossed $151 million over the week to bring that to $248.8 million for a worldwide gross of just under $400 million.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie – Infinity Castle slipped to third place with $11.9 million to bring its domestic gross to $99.3 million. Over the week, it grossed $167.3 million to bring its international gross to $450.3 million for a worldwide gross of $555 million.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale dropped one spot to fourth with $6.3 million bringing its domestic gross to $31.6 million. Internationally, it has grossed $27.9 million for a worldwide gross of $59.5 million.

The Long Walk rounded out the top five with $6.3 million as well (so fourth and fifth might shift around when final numbers are released). It has now grossed $22.7 million domestically. Internationally, the movie has grossed $2.8 million for a worldwide gross of $25.6 million.

In other comic related movies…

The Fantastic Four: First Steps grossed an estimated $582,000 to bring its domestic total to $273.5 million. Over the week, it grossed $1.7 million to bring its international total to $246.4 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $519.9 million.

Superman grossed $100,000 domestically to lift its domestic gross to just under $354 million. It remained at $261.2 million internationally and worldwide the movie has grossed $615.2 million.

Smurfs remained at $31.1 million domestically. Internationally, the movie has added $1.3 million over the week and has grossed $89 million. Worldwide, the gross is $120.1 million.

On the edge of comic related films, The Toxic Avenger remained at $2.9 million domestically. Internationally, the movie gained a little and has now grossed $419,715 for a worldwide total of $3.3 million and increase about about $100,000.

Overall, the weekend box office saw a total of 68 films gross $73,675,784 from 37,310 theaters compared to last weekend’s $147,347,407 from 77 films and 36,687 theaters. This weekends average was $1,974.69 compared to last weekend’s $4,016.34.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle Sets a Record Winning the Weekend Box Office

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Infinity Castle

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle won the weekend box office and set a record. The estimated $70 million is the biggest opening ever for an anime film in North America. It’s also the best opening of the year so far for an animated film as well as the biggest September animated debut of all time, not adjusting for inflation. Estimates had the film opening between $35 and $40 million with some going to the extreme of $50 million. They were all wrong apparently. Internationally, the film has grossed just under $283 million for a worldwide total of just under $353 million.

In second place was The Conjuring: Last Rites which grossed $26.1 million to bring its domestic gross to $131.1 million. Internationally, the movie grossed $97.8 million over the week to lift that to $201.8 million. Worldwide gross is $332.9 million after two weeks.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale debuted in third place with $18.1 million domestically. No international gross is reported.

The Long Walk debuted in fourth with $11.5 million domestically. There is no international gross reported.

The 2025 release of Toy Story rounded out the top five with $3.5 million domestically and $1.7 million at the international box office. That means $5.2 million worldwide.

In other comic related movies…

Smurfs remained at $31.1 million domestically. Internationally, the movie has added $1.4 million over the week and has grossed $87.7 million. Worldwide, the gross is $118.8 million.

On the edge of comic related films, The Toxic Avenger remained at $2.9 million domestically. Internationally, the movie gained a little and has now grossed $337,834 for a worldwide total of $3.2 million.

Overall, the weekend box office saw a total of 77 films gross $147,347,407 from 36,687 theaters compared to last weekend’s $124,569,482 from 75 films and 37,566 theaters. This weekends average was $4,016.34 compared to last weekend’s $3,316.02.
