Wizards of the Coast hits the brakes on its Secret Lair x Monster Hunter release

Secret Lair x Monster Hunter

Wizards of the Coast has been releasing regular limited collaborations between Magic: The Gathering and other properties. Dubbed “Secret Lair,” these drops tend to sell quickly and become collector items commanding some impressive prices after. One recent one fell short of expectations. The Secret Lair x Monster Hunter was revealed and quickly saw criticism from fans for the cards chosen for the set and lack of tying really into the Monster Hunter video game, and Wizards of the Coast to their credit have listened.

Posted on their site:

Let’s cut to the chase: the Secret Lair x Monster Hunter™ Superdrop we revealed last week fell short of expectations. We heard loud and clear that you were disappointed, and we believe we can do better. So, we’re going to postpone this release and rework this Superdrop entirely.

Like many of you, we’re big fans of Monster Hunter. It’s why we put this Superdrop together. But in our excitement, we missed the mark on elements like card selection and faithfully integrating the world and mechanics of Monster Hunter. As a result, the overall construction of this Superdrop is not up to the standard you have come to expect.

Pulling Superdrops back isn’t something we’re going to do very often, but we’re committed to doing better. Capcom is on board for us to take another swing at this Superdrop as well.

So, we’re going to pull this one back and will share new details and an updated release date in a few months. Keep an eye out for more information in 2026.

So what do you all think of the response? Good? Bad? Has a can of worms been opened?

PAX Unplugged 2025: Board Game Veterans Reveal Song of the Wildkin, a Co-Op Dungeon Crawler for All Ages

Song of the Wildkin

Bōken Games has revealed Song of the Wildkin, an upcoming co-op dungeon-crawling adventure board game set in a rich fantasy world of anthropomorphic animals and nature-based channeling known as Pitchcraft. Song of the Wildkin emerges from the collective dreams of a board game veteran supergroup: a minimal setup, quick-to-table game with depth and complexity appealing to adults and children (9+) alike, packed with surprises and brought to life with hundreds of charming illustrations.

Enter a world inhabited by the Storied, anthropomorphic animals capable of Pitchcraft — an innate ability to shape wood through song, used for everything from elaborate table-setting to architecture. Talented practitioners even craft wordless woodbeasts that draw memories from the wood used in their creation.

Yet the winds whisper of woodbeasts growing hostile, and unexplained disappearances plague the realm. Among the vanished is the leader of the Seekers, heroes charged with solving the realm’s problems. Four Seekers-in-Training gather their gear and set off on a quest for answers.

Song of the Wildkin is a green legacy game with a 30-hour narrative-driven campaign full of adventure, player choice, 12 classes, and bosses that become playable characters. Assemble an adventuring party of four Seekers from a colorful cast of characters like Truval Fairhide, the valiant and just Guardian fox, and Jubleth Paleclaw, the water wizard hat-wearing Essence Tapper Axolotl. Lead the Seeker squad to defeat bosses like the Eightfold Empress in epic encounters, and then recruit them into your party!

Embark on a journey across richly detailed biomes inhabited by all manner of Storied. Complete scenarios requiring Seekers to cooperate as they explore 240 unique map cards and utilize more than 150 abilities. Designed for collaborative, accessible play that invites both new players and seasoned board game veterans, Song of the Wildkin’s dungeon-crawling and exploration evoke the essence of adventure with deep lore and themes, an evolving world, and minimal setup friction, keeping the focus on fun for all.

Featuring an all-star team of creators such as Andrew Bosley (Illustrator, Everdell), Paul DeStefano (Writer, Oathsworn), Ines Możdżyńska (Graphic Design, Kinfire Chronicles), Edgar Ramos (Sculptor, Stuffed Fables, Bloodborne), Ivan Alexiev (Developer, Rise of Babel), and more to be revealed soon, Song of the Wildkin combines a grounded fantasy setting with engaging gameplay focused on collaboration and intuitive mechanics.

Song of the Wildkin is currently in development with plans for a winter 2026 release.
