Review: Inuyasha

19133815035_ac7235d55b_b

When people think of filler in anime, I assume they’re thinking of things like Bleach or Naruto, two series that thrived off stupid side plots that weren’t in the manga but people still watched. You see, filler is what happens when a series is popular but has an unfinished story manga-wise so the anime creators decide to screw it and make up plots. Now, I don’t know exactly where the filler arc originated, but the first time ever really noticed it was in the series Inuyasha by Rumiko Takahashi. The manga ran from 1996 to 2008 and the anime… Well the first series ran from 2000 to 2004 before the rightly named Final Act aired in 2009 to 2010. Rumiko Takahashi is also known for her work on Ranma ½ and most recently Rin-ne. However, I think, Inuyasha next to Ranma ½ is her most influential and long lasting work as it has continued to be prevalent in anime culture to this day.

The story follows Kagome Higurashi, your normal high-school girl who lives at a shrine in Tokyo who is magically transported to “Feudal Era” Japan. It’s there that she meets Inuyasha and wacky shenanigans ensue. They meet a multitude of other characters and have crazy love triangles all while trying to save the… “Feudal Era.” Also, there’s some stuff about a magic jewel that, completely by accident, is shattered into like… 99 shards if I remember correctly. I could make the joke about the main characters yelling each other’s name dramatically, but honestly, everyone’s sort of made that joke at this point. Besides, there’s a lot of other things I can make fun of! Like the fact that random characters seriously use “Ye” and that this is a series that continues the early 2000s tradition of reading out loud the horribly translated title cards. I’m also probably exaggerating the whole “filler arc” thing as well, but somewhere along the way it felt like the story stagnated and keep repeating the same three story lines when the anime ran out of manga to transcribe.

This is a series I watched every Saturday on Adult Swim’s anime block and it was actually one of my first anime series! It holds a special place in my heart, but like many things I have grown out of it and recognize that there are some things that could be better about the series. This is basically a repeat case of Chrono Crusade but with infinitely better end results.

For characters, we start with Kagome of course. She’s the traditional student who’s just trying to get the boy and graduate. Everything changes naturally when she falls in an ancient well on her family’s property. Then she’s transported to “Feudal” Japan with only a little emotional trauma. It’s there that she finds out who she is, or who she used to be, and what she has to do. It’s also there that she meets Inuyasha.

Inuyasha is a half-demon boy who only wants to become a full demon, mostly due to tragic backstory and yadda yadda. He’s rough around the edges, but he means well. He’s your typical early 90s/2000s male protag that’s honestly just trying his best. He and Kagome work well as characters together, often fighting and creating a lot of humor with each other. He does have a lot of issues though, especially in concern to that big ol’ who Kagome used to be thing.

We also have Sango a demon hunter with anger problems and a tragic backstory. She’s there to act as… Well, a love interest for another character. She is awesome, using a huge boomerang to kill demons alongside her companion who’s… A giant cat or something? I was never really sure what Kirara was, but I knew she was cool.  Sango’s on both a path for revenge and character growth. She spends a lot of time being one of the actually more helpful characters in the series, but is held back by your typical early 2000s character type that almost echoes the tsundere but not completely.

Then finally, last but not least, Miroku a perverted monk who also surprisingly has a tragic backstory. He has a magic deus ex machina hand hole, it’s actually called the Wind Tunnel, and it sucks up everything from demons to land. One day though, it’ll probably consume Miroku too, which would be more worrisome if the cast didn’t seem to either forget about it or somehow have it incapacitated. Like, it’s literally an OP skill that gets sort of pushed to the side so Miroku can be a pervert and the comedic relief too often.

There’s also a multitude of side characters that don’t really add much to the story. That’s one of my major issues with this series, we’re introduced to a really big cast that just don’t really do anything, like they’re there but in the grand scheme of things Kagome and Inuyasha are the important ones. That and a lot of these characters are just… Not the greatest? It feels like everyone has a tragic backstory but it doesn’t really excuse their awful personalities. I mean, a lot of the characters grow eventually, but I felt the story suffered from the abundance of characters.

The art is… Frankly a bit dated in the style itself. You can see it in the way the face and eyes are shaped compared to more recent series, the eyes are squarer while the faces are sharp, short, and round. That being said it’s not entirely bad though, some parts of it still hold up to this day, especially fight scenes. Inuyasha in any fight still looks clean and each frame, well not each, is a good screenshot. I would say that while dated this series animated art holds up a lot better than late 2000s series. It doesn’t fall into horrible anatomy or cringe worthy moe-bait. Both animations were done by Sunrise Studio who is most recently known for the Love Live! series, but more popularly known for the Gundam series or Cowboy Bebop to name a few series. It was licensed by the all too familiar companies Madman Entertainment and Viz Media. These are all studios that are great and have accomplished a lot and it shows with Inuyasha how far they had come then and how far they have since then. Now, I didn’t read the manga, but from the art I’ve seen it comes off farm more simplistic in design, at least character-wise, but also charming at the same time. Also, you can see how Rumiko Takahashi has grown in terms of her art as Inuyasha comes of a bit sharper compared to later series she has done.

Sound wise, I’ve only watched the dub and I always, and still do this day, thought it was a pretty good dub in terms of voice and execution. Now, translation wise…. I won’t be praising that. There is a character that says “Ye” to make us believe we’re in the far long past but literally no other characters from the past speak that way. That aside though, the main characters were well voiced and acted, I never had an issue with that. For instance, Inuyasha was voiced by Richard Ian Cox, who also voiced Ranma in Ranma ½  and Kai Shiden in like five different versions of Mobile Suit Gundam. Honestly though, none of the actors have done a lot in terms of anime beyond Inuyasha, at least not big roles unless you’re counting Kelly Sheridan as… Starlight Glimmer in MLP: Friendship is Magic… However, I don’t think that takes away from the show at all, rather it sort of gives a different feel of how unique the show was. This is still one of Viz Media’s strongest dubs, I would say, personally at least, and it still holds up compared to other works they’ve done. The acting is on point and never feels contrived like some newer series might. Music wise, I remember most of the themes being amazing, even if there felt like there was a new one every twenty episodes. The ones I remember most clearly are probably the first seasons ending themes which were done by Dream and Do As Infinity. Both were sweet and slow ending songs really showed the softer side of the series that would get bogged down by all the drama and growing violence in the story line. Ultimately, I think much like the art this sound holds up just as equally as the art.

I know that these days Inuyasha can sort of come off as a joke in most anime circles, but I like to think that’s because for many people it was a starting point for an interest in the anime format. It was for me at least. While there are things that could be better, translations and reused plots, but beyond that it holds up nicely. If you ever want something that you could binge watch or just enjoy in the background, I’d say this series is perfect for that!

Inuyasha: 8.5/10

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

batman-18Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: Logan (yes, my top pick is a movie) – Wolverine has always been my favourite Marvel character, and is the reason I read comics today. On the week that I turn another year older I get both Old Man Logan and Logan – it almost feels like Marvel are wishing me a happy birthday.

Old Man Logan #19 (Marvel) – Alex’s Week of Wolverine continues with Jeff Lemire – I don’t remember if his Brood storyline is over or not (I’ve read a lot of Wolverine comics over the past couple days), but this series has been strong for a long time and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Faith #9 (Valiant) – A one-shot story that seems to be more of a day-in-the-life than anything else, which I’m super happy about because I love reading about the other side of a superhero’s life.

Batman #18 (DC Comics) – I didn’t expect to be looking forward to reading a comic from this series again, but I’ve been cautiously optimistic about what Tom King has been doing here after the last couple of issues. While I think there’s more chance than not that this’ll disappoint, when it’s good King’s Batman is really good.

Joe

Top Pick: Royal City #1 (Image) – Jeff Lemire has been one of the best creators in comics the last few years. I love his work on Black Hammer, Old Man Logan, Moon Knight, AD: After Death, and much more. He is one of the few talents that can write and draw, and here with this book we are getting both. Royal City tells the tales of middle America and a real family. There’s also some interesting mystery to discover. I cannot wait!

Extremity #1 (Image) – From the minute I saw the art style on this book I wanted it. The premise is about a child that has their drawing hand chopped off by oppressive tyrants that have taken over their lands. While they learn to draw with their other hand, it isn’t the same. This is about rising up to fight oppression, and finding your identity when the thing you loved to do most is taken from you. It has a powerful metaphorical message, and I think this book will be something special as we get deeper into the story.

Superman #18 (DC Comics) – We are finally going to get some answers! Mr. Oz, fake Clark Kent, and more will seemingly be explained over the next few issues of Superman and Action Comics, two of DC’s best series. This along with the upcoming button issues for Batman and Flash have me excited to know more about our heroes lost time, and who this Superman and other fake Clark Kent are.

Batman #18 (DC Comics) – Tom King has been building a powder keg of a story with Bane, Catwoman, and Batman. I am hoping this is where it all explodes, and by the last few pages of Batman #17, it will. Bane knows where to hurt Batman the most, the people he cares for. I like the twists King has given us so far, and am wondering where he goes from here.

Moon Knight #12 (Marvel) – Sadly, one of the best things Marvel has going for it is coming to an end in a few issues. I still have no idea what is happening, but have faith Lemire will give us a great ending to a great book. Is he losing his mind? Or has all of this been real? Perhaps a combination of the two. Great series, and it appears it will go out on a high note.

Shay

I couldn’t pick a top pick this week. It’s all so damn good! From socially conscious comics to girl-powered comics, to straight up anarchy and good old fashioned action, it’s a great week to be all about that comic life!

Harley Quinn#15 (DC Comics) – Harley breaks her peace with the Mayor to save the homeless, fight gentrification and, more.

The Dregs #2 (Black Mask Studios) – Dig deeper into this socially conscious detective drama as we are taken on a journey to find out the fate of the homeless population.

X-Files Deviation 2017 (IDW Publishing) – Mashing up X-Files & Orphan Black and a lady Mulder! Shut up and take my money!!!

America #1 (Marvel) – It’s heeeeeree and, I’m here for it!

Bullseye #2 (Marvel) – Bullseye is on a mission to rescue a mobsters son, he’s in the murder business and business is good!

Paul

Top Pick: Champions #6 (Marvel) – This has been a fun, action packed series right from the beginning.  These characters make up a great team, and the writing has been on point, spotlighting issues that readers can relate to but also bringing in humour and fun between the characters.  I’m excited for this issue, seeing the team go up against another team of teens calling themselves The Freelancers.  I’m looking forward to see who makes up this new team and what their beef is with the Champions.

Batman #18 (DC Comics) – This is one of the few DC titles I have stuck with since the Rebirth, and it has consistently delivered.  I’m really enjoying this current story arc with Bane, especially when Batman put together his own suicide squad (a great couple of issues!)  And now, as the solicit says, Bane is in Gotham and looking for some payback.  Definitely not one to miss.

Brett

Top Pick: Motor Girl #4 (Abstract Studios) – Easily my favorite comic on the market right now. Terry Moore’s writing and art are just plain fun. Every issue has delivered and then some.

America #1 (Marvel) – A fan favorite character gets her solo series. I’m intrigued to see what it’s like and if it delivers. This is the comic that has the highest bar to get over.

Savage Things #1 (Vertigo) – Justin Jordan does Vertigo… you need more?

Agents of PACT #1/Freelance #1 (Chapterhouse Comics) – These two first issues I feel really kick off Chapterhouse’s superhero universe. So far most of their comics have been fun, so more to the part is awesome

All Time Comics Crime Destroyer #1 (Fantagraphics) – Another superhero universe launching. This one is a bit retro.

Smoketown #1 (Scout Comics) – Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s new series from Scout Comics. Johnson does solid comics and so does Scout, so the combo is something I’m looking forward to reading.

DC Rebirth Recap & Review: Comics Released 2/22

Welcome to Graphic Policy’s DC Rebirth: Recap And Review where we take a look at the comics released under DC‘s Rebirth banner and try to work out just how accessible they are for new readers – we’ll also be providing  recap of sorts for the relevant story beats up until the issue in question in order to help you figure out if the series is something you’re interested in.

Each comic will receive a rating of Friendly or Unfriendly based on how easy it was for

new readers to pick them up; the ratings are based solely on the issues released in the post-Rebirth ongoing series. More consideration regarding the comic’s accessibility will be given for the specific issue being read rather than the series overall, but if reading a back issue will help, then that will be mentioned. Generally, the quality of an issue won’t be discussed unless it directly impacts a new reader’s enjoyment of the series.

You may notice that not every comic is covered week to week, and that’s because I  sometimes forget to read them  (although that doesn’t happen often). If I have missed an issue, typically I won’t go looking for back issues to catch up on events – this feature is all about accessibility for new readers, after all.

ac_cv974_dsAction Comics #974 While Superman helps Steel with Superwoman’s sickness (more details as to how and why she’s sick can be found in Superwoman, but it’s not overaly relevant to this story), Lois Lane is on a date with Clark Kent. If that sounds confusing, then it’s best you read the comic because it’s surprisingly Friendly.

Batman Beyond #5 The funny thing is, the recap at the beginning of this comic is something I wish I’d been aware of awhile ago, but had it been in an earlier issue then there’d have been a slightly large spoiler for a little plot twist laced with delicious irony. The epilogue to the first arc was as Friendly as a finale can be.

Deathstroke #13 Having missed the last issue, I have no idea what’s going on here – which ultimately isn’t much different when I’ve read the previous issue. Despite the qualiy of the comic, it’s tough to read month to month. For the Friendliest reading experience, go for the trade.

Detective Comics #951 The first part of a new arc that pits Batman and his team against the League of Shadows, an enemy that the Dark Knight doesn’t believe exists, but the prisoner in his tower does… If you’re willing to pick a few things up along the way, this is a Friendly comic.

Justice League Of America #1 It’s the first issue, and while it should be friendly… it’s almost not. It’s also not that good either.

Hal Jordan And The Green Lantern Corps #15 Much like Batman Beyond this week this comic is Friendly enough without a recap, although it’s not the best place to start reading the series simply because there have been better issues in the series.

Suicide Squad #12 All you honestly need to know about this comic you can get from the front cover, making this effortlessly Friendly.

teen-titans-5Teen Titans #5 Robin was captured by Ra’s Al Ghul when he tried to bargain his servitude in order to save the rest of the Teen Titan’s lives, and so the young heroes decided to break him out… this is a fantastic, and Friendly comic.

The Flash #17 The Rogues planned one final, major heist and almost got away with it if it hadn’t been for that pesky speedster! Another finale that’s easy enough to pick up, and it’s worth doing that as you’ll also get a sense of what’s going to happen next. Friendly.

Wonder Woman #17 Wonder Woman has suffered some form of breakdown, whether real or induced I don’t think has been revealed just yet. For some reason the story has been fairly forgettable so far so I don’t remember too much, but this issue was Friendly enough for me to enjoy it.
