Resident Evil has gotten a lot of positive buzz and that showed up at the weekend box office with the film opening with the best weekend its ever had. The movie grossed an estimated $60 million domestically and $48.3 million internationally for an opening weekend of $108.3 million worldwide. That’s the best opening for the film franchise and nearly beats the top domestic gross it has ever had.

The franchise is an interesting one with recent releases doing really well internationally, far better than its domestic gross. The movie had a hell of run in the international market pre-Covid with the results tanking in 2021. But, the movies also tend to have a low budget, around $30-$60 million depending on the release and have easily not just made back their budget, but also a nice profit to go along with it, hence why we’re seeing the eighth live-action film in the franchise.

The newest film has a franchise high budget of $75-$80 million, so will need around $160 million to see a profit. With a $108.3 million opening, there’s a good chance the film will reach that and then some, especially if it performs more like the 2010s releases internationally and add in the fact horror has been doing really well this year. With spooky season beginning, the film may have a good run over the next month.

In second place was Practical Magic 2 which saw a 59.5% drop from the previous week. It grossed an estimated $12.2 million to lift its domestic gross to a little over $50 million. Internationally, it grossed $10.8 million over the week to bring that total to $26.8 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $76.8 million. The original film in 1998 grossed $46.7 million domestically and $47.7 million internationally for a worldwide total of $94.4 million.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day slipped to third place with $6.5 million to bring its domestic gross to $944.5 million. Internationally, it added $18 million over the week and has grossed $1.534 billion for a worldwide gross of $2.479 billion. The movie has now the top grossing domestic film of all time having passed Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens‘ $936.7 million set in 2015. Worldwide, the movie sits in third place where it’s likely to stay behind the second place Avengers: Endgame‘s $2.799 billion. Sony is eyeing crossing the $1 billion domestic number, something that’s never been done before with the movie’s theatrical run extended to November 16, giving it 108 days in theaters.

The Odyssey came in fourth place dropping one spot with $4.9 million to bring its domestic total to $609.8 million. Over the week, it grossed $27.5 million to bring its international gross to $1.112 billion for a worldwide gross of $1.721 billion.

Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the top five, remaining in the spot from the previous week. It grossed an estimated $4.5 million to bring its domestic total to $54.8 million. Over the week, it grossed $7.8 million internationally to bring that to $25 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $79.8 million.

The Transformers: The Movie got a re-release to celebrate its 40th anniversary coming in eighth with $3.1 million and has now grossed $4.2 million with no international total reported. The original release grossed $5.8 million domestically in 1986 which means the film has officially crossed the $10 million all-time gross.

Akira, the classic anime film, added about $200,000 domestically and has now grossed $4.5 million.

Numbers have 37 movies grossing $110,686,796 from 36,358 theaters for an average of $3,044.36. That is compared to last week’s 67 movies grossing $85,990,648 from 44,054 theaters for an average of $1,952.
