Practical Magic 2 knocks Spider-Man: Brand New Day Out of First Place
Practical Magic 2 debuted in first place at the weekend box office grossing an estimated $30 million domestically and $16 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $46 million.
The original film debuted in 1998 opening with $13.1 million domestically and went on to gross $46.7 million domestically and $47.7 million internationally for a worldwide gross of $94.4 million. Warner Bros. should be happy with this sequel which doubled its domestic opening and nearly matched its entire domestic run in one weekend.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day slipped to second place grossing $8.4 million domestically and lifting that total to $935.2 million. It’s inching closer to that unprecedented $1 billion domestic mark, something never achieved. Internationally, it added $31 million to its total which is now $1.516 billion. The movie has grossed $2.451 billion worldwide. It’s the top grossing domestic film by a wide margin, $335 million. It’s also the top grossing film worldwide by about $800 million. The movie is now in second place for the all-time domestic gross (and will pass that this week) and is currently in third place for all-time worldwide gross. It’s possible the film could move into second place, though unlikely.
The Odyssey dropped to third place with $7.4 million to bring its domestic total to $600.5 million. Internationally, it grossed $41 million over the week and stands at $1.084 billion. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $1.684 billion.
Runner debuted in fourth place with $6.4 million domestically and no international return.
Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the top five with $4.1 million to bring its domestic total to $45.6 million. Internationally, the movie added $10 million over the week and has now grossed $17.2 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed just under $65 million. The movie is being cheered as some sort of victory against Warner Bros. who shelved its released. Originally, Warner Bros. took a $30 million tax write off but eventually sold it to Ketchup Entertainment for $50 million. Warner Bros. would have needed the film to gross $140 million to make a profit. As is, they’d be seeing around a $40 million loss. Instead, they took a $20 million loss on the film. Ketchup needs it to gross about $120 million to see a profit (they spent $10 million marketing) which the film hasn’t earned and likely will need to be made up in streaming and physical/digital media sales. It’s unknown if/what Ketchup gets out of that. They also reportedly sold some international rights for $20 million, which even with that, they film is still far from profitable. In the end, Warner Bros.’ decision on paper seems to have been the right one.
In comic related movies…
Akira, the classic anime film, had a special re-release two weekends ago where it grossed $3.2 million. This past weekend, the film added $300,000 to the total which is now $4.3 million.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu remained at $177.7 million domestically. Internationally, the movie gained a little and is at $167.8 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $345.5 million.
Numbers have 30 movies grossing $79,536,095 from 37,422 theaters for an average of $2,125. That is compared to last week’s 70 movies grossing $93,531,192 from 40,798 theaters for an average of $2,292.54.
