Universal Monsters: Dracula #3 continues the hauntingly beautiful classic

Universal Monsters: Dracula #3

Dr. John Seward struggles against the mounting evidence that his Lucy is under the thrall of a blood-sucking supernatural being! Universal Monsters: Dracula #3 continues the amazing adaptation of the classic novel.

What is there to say about Universal Monsters: Dracula #3? It continues what has been an amazing adaptation of the classic novel that has inspired so much entertainment. Writer James Tynion IV keeps the pacing and the ominous nature of the story. There’s a haunting aspect of the comic that has flowed through every issue to create a comic that just stays with you, like a beautiful scary dream.

Where Tynion’s writing really shines is how much the comic feels like modern horror. For those familiar with the story, it’s hard to not yell at the characters who make such stupid decisions, ignoring the danger that lays around them. It’s amazing how it works so well in this classic story, and makes it all rather more entertaining. You wonder when the main characters will catch on the danger that lurks?

Much of this is helped by the art of Martin Simmonds and lettering by Rus Wooton. The art is amazing, just every page and panel beautiful. Every issue has been fantastic with art that leaves you lingering on the page. Simmonds highlights the horror in such a way that it doesn’t disturb but instead unnerves. The art is of another world, rather fitting for the story which features otherworldly creatures. But, even with the horror, there’s something grounded about it all. Simmonds teases the terror.

Universal Monsters: Dracula #3 is another amazing issue in what has been a hell of a series. It’s kind of hard to praise it more than I have for three issues now. The art is another level. The story is a classic. The only issue is I want to read it all at once now. This is a series that’s good and is only going to be better when it’s completed and can be read in one sit through.
