The CW Has Found Its Batwoman in Ruby Rose
Batwoman is coming to The CW‘s DC TV Universe and the network has found its actress to fill the tights in Ruby Rose. Rose will play Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman who will be introduced in this upcoming season’s crossover event. The network is also developing a stand-alone series around the character.
Rose is a model-actress who is an impressive name to take on the role. She broke out in acting as part of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black. She has also appeared in XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, Pitch Perfect 3, and John Wick: Chapter 2. She also stars in The Meg which debuts in theaters this week.
Rose identifies as gender fluid while the recent take on Kate Kane in the comics has the character as lesbian. This will be the first topline character that is LGBT to have their own series.
In the comics, Kane is the cousin of Bruce Wayne. She is dismissed from the military after coming out, this was during the era of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” She goes on to don the tights and fight crime as Batwoman.
The television teaser has described the character as:
Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
Rose will make her debut this December.
