Review: Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #1

HJFLC_Cv1_dsWith no backup and only his ring and battery to keep him alive, Hal Jordan streaks toward battle with the Sinestro Corps, while his greatest foe prepares to wipe the last Green Lantern of them all out of existence!

Though Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps are in the title of this series, this first issue by writer Robert Venditti actually really centers around Sinestro and his Sinestro Corps.

Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #1 does a really solid job of setting up where things stand and where at least Sinestro sits in this. With the Green Lantern Corps missing, Sinestro has taken over in the center of the universe and has decided his mission is to bring peace to the galaxy through fear. The issue feels a lot like Sinestro giving his grand vision and his treatise as to how it’ll happen. The parts with Hal or the Green Lanterns is really just a few pages as most of the comic is about their foes. It’s an interesting choice to start, but one I like as it really sets the stage that Jordan is an insurgent in many ways. This is his uphill battle and he needs to find his allies

It’s an interesting choice to start, but one I like as it really sets the stage that Jordan is an insurgent in many ways. This is his uphill battle and he needs to find his allies in hopes of winning.

The art by Rafa Sandoval is awesome and looks seamless from the previous comics we’ve seen. All of the characters look exactly the same and there’s some great choices in panel and page layouts that captures what Sinestro is unleashing on the galaxy.

This first issue sets a lot up in what feels like will be an epic galactic battle over who’ll protect the galaxy. There’s something about it that really works that makes you feel the grand scale of it all but a story we’ve seen before, a despot being taken on by rebel insurgents. It’s a solid start that has me excited to see what comes next.
