TV Review: Preacher S1E5 South Will Rise Gain

Preacher-PosterAfter his stunt with Quincannon, Jesse is Annville’s newest rock star; and Tulip and Cassidy connect. Meanwhile, the Cowboy makes a tragic decision.

Preacher‘s fifth episode gets the ball really rolling as Jesse becomes a rock star with what he’s done to Quincannon. That also means there’s much more of a spotlight on him and his abilities as folks have begun to figure out there’s something more to him.

All of this really starts to get the series to begin to get to the heart of its point, Jesse and his power. And, so far the show has done all of this in a very different way that the comic series.

What’s really interesting is that divergence between the television series and the comic it’s based on. The television series for me really begins to show its strength as it brings things more down to a grounded level while at the same time being completely absurd in other ways. From the two mysterious individuals from Heaven to retrieve what’s inside Jesse to Quincannon who in this episode really keeps us on our toes, it’s very different and stands on its own.

The episode especially leaves us with a rather unexpected move by Quincannon and Jesse’s meeting with two mysterious individuals also sets up things to come. This is the episode where things really begin to get moving.

As usual, the acting by everyone is beyond solid. This is seriously one of the best casts on television with a weak spot nowhere to be seen. The show just delivers more and more with every episode with each improving on the last.
