Gotham Casts Penguin, Alfred, Captain Essen & Barbara Kean

The Hollywood Reporter has said that a few more roles in Fox‘s Gotham television series has been cast. This is just a few days after it was announced that Ben McKenzie was cast as Jim Gordon. It is being reported the show has cast the roles of the Penguin, Alfred Pennyworth, Captain Essen and Barbara Kean.

Robin Lord Taylor has been cast as Oswald Cobblepot, who you might know better as The Penguin. According to THR:

The character is described as having the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal who is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

Zabryna Guevara will play Captain Essen, who is Gordon’s boss at the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad. As the series is an “origin” story, that includes Gordon as a rookie cop.

Sean Pertwee will step into the role of the iconic Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s butler and Batman’s partner. According to THR:

In Gotham, the character is a tough-as-nails ex-Marine from East London, who has loyally served the Wayne family. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he is fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.

Last, but not least, is Erin Richards who has been cast as Barbara Kean, an ER doctor who is engaged to Gordon.

The series is an origin story of Gordon and Gotham city, focused on the cop as well as the early years of its famous villains. In addition to The Penguin, we’ve been told to expect the Joker (though not sure how without Batman), Riddler and Catwoman as part of the series. It has already been said it will end with Bruce Wayne donning the mantle of Batman.
