Review: Afterlife With Archie #3

awa3-0The zombie apocalypse is in full swing and the surviving members of the gang have taken refuge in the Lodge Mansion—believing themselves safe from the infected roaming the streets of Riverdale! But there’s no stopping Archie from sneaking out, risking life and limb to find his missing parents—leaving those sequestered behind vulnerable to an enemy within! The zombie mayhem (and body-count) continues to rise in this breakout series. Students, parents and teachers are dropping like flies. Jughead, Mr. Weatherbee, Miss Grundy, Ethel… who will be NEXT?! The end of the world is here… prepare for the unexpected!

Afterlife With Archie debuted in 2013 to a great reception and solid reviews. The first two issues are some of my favorite of the year and the series one of the best new series of 2013. Featuring the dream team of Harvey Award-winning writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Eisner Award-winning artist Francesco Francavilla, the series is spinning an unbelievable tale of a zombie apocalypse that originates in Archie’s hometown of Riverdale. Even more amazing is it’s getting me to be excited for a comic featuring the Riverdale gang. I’ve never been a big Archie fan, but this adult take is not just a good Archie book, it’s a great zombie/horror comic. Archie has shown that they’re willing to push the clean-cut image they have and this is a prime example of that.

The combination of this creative team has been knocking each issue out of the park, and this one is no exception, They lay everything out on the table, creating a modern horror comic with throwback sensibilities. Aguirre-Sacasa’s writing creates believable characters that would fit in any horror movie and a plot that plays as an homage to the classics. Most importantly the pacing a tone make it a fun horror story with just enough chills.

Francavilla’s art is amazing and this work shows why he’s one of my favorite artists. His style is made for pulp/noir and horror stories and he shines here. The combination of the two is fantastic and one of the best creative teams out there. I feel like I’m looking at a classic horror comic, but the modern setting, used quite well, reminds me that’s not the case.

This is an amazing comic series that should be on everyone’s buy list. It was one of the best debuts of 2013 and I expect it to be a contender for one of the best series of 2014.
