Review: New Avengers #13

New Avengers 13With the consequences of Infinity fresh on their minds, tough decisions are made by these “New Avengers”. The gathering of a new Illuminati must deal with the incursions that threaten their Earth. We learn more about this ongoing threat through the eyes of characters who are familiar, but not quite the heroes we know.

Post Infinity, with New Avengers #13, writer Jonathan Hickman has jumped right back into his ongoing story involving alternate Earths intruding into our dimension and threatening our world. With each one, Earth’s defenders seem to make more difficult decisions. While the issue has the “Inhumanity” tag, it has little to do with that series, instead focusing on the previously interrupted storyline.

The standout of the issue isn’t Hickman’s writing, which is excellent, but Simone Bianchi‘s art which is stunning as usual. Bianchi’s style is beyond fantastic with a unique look that you know whose it is.

Overall, it’s nice to get back to the incursion plotline which has been interesting, but going on for a while now. Hickman loves to write maxi-stories that play out over twenty issues, with payouts years after they start. I can’t see this one going that long, but it’s looking like the payout will be as solid as he’s delivered in the past.

Overall, it’s nice to see the series get right back to what it was delivering with a strong story and amazing art too.
