Review – Shrapnel: Hubris #2

Bookmark and Share

There’s a lot going on in the second issue of Shrapnel: Hubris #2 and I’m torn on what I think.  The issue is published by Radical Publishing, created by Mark Long and Nick Sagan, written by Sagan and Clinnette Minnis with art by Concept Art House and the cover by Stephan Martiniere.  The second issue picks up with the first and takes us through the build up to Captain Narayan’s assault on the Solar Alliance.

Consumed with advancing their War of Unity on multiple fronts, the Solar Alliance may be vulnerable to an audacious, high-risk assault on one of their most valued possessions.  So rests the hopes of oppressed Helots across the System as a plot against the oldest extraplanetary colony moves forward.  Once loyal marines now turned freedom fighters, Captain Narayan, Colonel Rossi and their troops have a golden chance to slow down the enemy war machine…but at what cost?

I almost thinks there’s too much going on in this issue with a lot of cutting and back and forth.  Like another Radical title I reviewed the blacks in the art made it very difficult to figure out exactly what was going on and at times figure out who is who.  Overall, the story is entertaining.  The world is pretty cool with a hint of Total Recall.  When I could make out the art, it’s beautiful and really nice to look at.  There’s just points where there’s a lot of black and other dark colors too, making it hard to make at what’s what.

Like the first issue, I feel like I was missing something.  It was just hard to literally see what was going on at times.  Also like the first issue the story doesn’t focus on the action of the attacks but instead the lead up and chess playing that occurs before.  An interesting take and one I really appreciate.
