Set in a small town in Arizona, Werewolf By Night will tell the incredible tale of a young man named Jake dealing with the effects of a family curse while trying to protect his people from a mysterious corporation. Marvel’s Pull List Shows off New Champions, King in Black, Werewolf By Night, X of Swords, and more!

Today, Marvel released its special edition of The Pull List, unveiling exclusive information for the hottest books coming to comic shops this October!

Tucker Markus took the reins of this special previews announcement solo, presenting the first look at a few bleeding-edge Marvel comics, with info all about new series, art, and creative teams heading to your local comic shop in three months! This special previews announcement gave viewers a first look at the highly anticipated X-Men crossover, X of Swords and the celebration of 50 years of Conan the Barbarian’s Marvel Comics legacy in Conan the Barbarian #15 and The Official Handbook of the Conan Universe Anniversary Edition. This latest episode also teased new eras for both the Fantastic Four in Fantastic Four #25 and Captain Marvel in Captain Marvel #25 and exciting starts for the brand new Werewolf By Night and the new Champions. The Pull List also shed light on King in Black, the next chapter in Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s landmark run on Venom coming in December!

Afro Samurai Creator Takashi Okazaki Debuts at Marvel with a Werewolf By Night Variant Cover

This April, you’ll be able to see the work of acclaimed Japanese artist, Takashi Okazaki, on the cover of the brand new series, Werewolf By Night! Known for creating the hit manga series Afro Samurai, which went on to inspire both an anime series and an Emmy-nominated television film, Okazaki now brings his incredible talent to Marvel Comics.

Written by Taboo and Ben Jackendoff with art by Scot Eaton, Werewolf By Night #1 will introduce an all-new Werewolf by Night, a young man who must deal with a family curse while trying to protect his community from a deadly threat. The Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo, Benjamin Jackendoff, and Scot Eaton Introduce a New Werewolf By Night

Taboo of The Black Eyed Peas will be co-writing a new Marvel comic series this April with Benjamin Jackendoff.

The pair previously worked together on a story for Marvel Comics #1000 that focused on Red Wolf and will now be teaming up with acclaimed comic artist Scot Eaton on Werewolf By Night. The series will introduce a brand-new Werewolf by Night character to the Marvel Universe in a story set in Arizona. The new Werewolf by Night will be a young man named Jake who will be dealing with the effects of a family curse while trying to protect his people. The events of the story will also be driven by the outcome of March’s Outlawed one-shot.

The new series and character will be “going through a Native lens” reflecting Taboo’s Native American heritage.

Werewolf By Night #1 is out this April with a cover by Mike McKone.

Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk Announced for Disney+ at D23

We knew there’d be some announcements at D23 and Marvel brought the goods with three new series for the streaming service. Marvel Studios has announced television shows based on Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk. All three are known to have been in the works or have been mentioned by Marvel Studios honcho Kevin Feige.

What is new is interesting is that some of these shows were assumed to be movies, Ms. Marvel especially. Moon Knight and She-Hulk were both rumored to be in the running for shows on Netflix before that deal went south.

British writer Bisha K. Ali has been tapped for Ms. Marvel to write and act as showrunner. It is assumed the series will star Kamala Khan, an Inhuman who took on the mantle from her idol Carol Danvers (though in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Danvers has never gone by Ms. Marvel.

She-Fulk first appeared in Savage She-Hulk #1 and was created by Stan Lee and John Buscema. Jennifer Walters is the cousin of Bruce Banner and in the comics gained her powers due to a blood transfusion. She’s also a lawyer balancing her life as a lawyer and superhero.

Moon Knight was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin and debuts in Werewolf by Night #32 in 1975. Marc Spector is a former Marine turned mercenary and near death is offered a chance at life if he becomes the god Khonshu’s avatar on Earth. What’s notable is Spector is Jewish, the son of a rabbi.

Kamala Khan is the newest of the three characters debuting in Captain Marvel #14 in 2013. Created by Sana Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, and Adrian Alphona, the character is a New Jersey Muslim teenager who’s also Inhuman and gains her powers after Terrigen Mist is unleashed around the world.

These shows are all under the Marvel Studios banner showing the expansion of the power and reach of that arm of Marvel and its head Kevin Feige.

These shows are in addition to the already announced The Falcon and Winter Soldier, WandaVision, Loki, and Hawkeye which will all debut beginning in late 2020 and throughout 2021.

In other Marvel Studios news, Kit Harrington is rumored to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Wyatt Russell will join The Falcon and Winter Solider as John F. Walker, aka U.S. Agent.

Review: Spider-Island #1

In some ways the entirety of Secret Wars has at times read like a fan fic. Although there is a strong enough core to the overall story to hold it together, it is equally a relatively fertile ground for creators to let loose in terms of creativity. Some tie-ins have benefited from this and others have not, and in the case of Spider-Island it is very like the former. The creative team here has taken the crossover from four summers ago and repurposed it, asking some common fan fic questions like what if the Spider Queen had managed to take over the Avengers? Or what if Flash Thompson as Venom was the one fighting for the city, not Spider-Man.

The plot here focuses on Flash and his few allies – Jessica Drew, the Vision and Werewolf by Night. They are fighting a losing battle against the spread of the spider virus, and they are desperate to find something which they can do to counter it. Werewolf by Night is himself infested but only comes to the side of the heroes when her turns into a wolf at night, and he manages to give Flash the information that he might need to finally stop the spread of the virus. He launches a covert mission with the Vision, Jessica and himself, but things don’t turn out exactly as planned, though in this case neither for the heroes nor the villains.

The result is a fresh take on the crossover by recasting some of the main characters and by changing the baseline of the setting. It is a bit grittier than the original, but the reimagining works well as the reader is drawn into the story almost immediately and the pace never lets up. It is also nice to see the backup feature showing us a slightly older Spider-Girl (now Spider-Woman) from the MC2, which also sort of ties into the Secret Wars crossover. In the end this is a pretty decent tie-in to Secret Wars, proving once again that those who are willing to push the boundaries that the freedom of the crossover allows, also benefit from those risks, as they have paid off here and elsewhere for these tie-in series.
