What final threat? The wrath of Conan and Red Sonja of course. Recognizing that the scourge of blood root has risen again, the Cimmerian and the red haired hellion go after Kal’Ang with a vengeance. But what of the Seer and his secret motivations?

Review: Red Sonja/Conan #2

RSConan02-Cov-A-BenesRed Sonja awakens after her first battle against Kal’ang and his army, trying to piece together what has just happened. The bigger question though is, why is any of this happening?

The story opens with Red Sonja waking from her unconscious state, only to find three men scavenging a pile of corpses decaying on the battle field nearby. From there, she tries to remember what has occurred through the questioning of one of the men who saw the battle from afar. The problem with the story is that, it feels like a wonderful climax to a larger tale but, not enough work has gone into character development to make the battle compelling. Kal’ang’s motivation for fighting centers on his desire to conquer the world but, we do not have enough time with the character to truly understand why. Similarly, Red Sonja and Conan have almost no interaction. Conan barely has any part to play aside from a few lines of dialogue and some brief scenes during the battle flashbacks. Sonja and Conan’s relationship grows little and there is minimal development on why they are fighting together either. With more time for characters to grow, this could have been a fantastic climax to a violent war. Instead, it feels rushed, with the battle ending only in flashbacks and the final confrontation seemingly already on the horizon.

The art works very well to accentuate all of the action and violence. The set pieces are well laid out and the battles feel chaotic. There is a sense of tension many times in these sequences where the fighting is fast and impactful. Kal’ang’s beasts look especially impressive in combat. Although, the art does have moments when it falters. There is a lack of consistency in how characters muscles are accentuated. Some are done in only in light gray shading, while others are inked in dark black. There are other issues of consistency as well. On one page, the monsters created by Kal’ang are larger than the humans they are fighting but not by much then, on the very next page, Sonja and her horse are barely as big as the foot of the very same creature.

Overall, this issue feels like it could have been a great final chapter to a larger narrative but, the build up to it was too rushed and none of the action feels like a rewarding payoff of what the series has done so far.

Review: Red Sonja / Conan #1

RSConan01-Cov-A-RossRed Sonja and Conan are reunited as captains of mercenary companies who team to fight the forces of an evil sorcerer. Little do they realize that a shadow of the past has returned, something of dire peril from their previous adventures together. It’s the Cimmerian and Sonja reunited for more bloody swordplay!

The series brings together properties from both Dynamite Entertainment and Dark Horse Comics.

Like most covers Alex Ross draws, this one is no exception to it being a work of art. Combining two characters known for being ferocious, violent, and skilled fighters. However they both exist in the same world, just in different areas geographically. Of course what would that barbaric world be with out wizards who lusts for power, kings and sell-sword companies.

Written by Victor Gischler with art by Roberto Castro, does the story excel in the setting?

That it does. To think it all starts with opening a chest left behind by a dead king and a prince eager to open it. Several years have passed, and now the kingdom of Kush is on the brink of war with a meager army. The king is gathering companies of sell-swords to strengthen their army. Struggling for commanders, Conan and Red Sonja do what they do best. Fight.

Review: The Shadow #100

Shadow100-Cov-A-WagnerFor 100 Dynamite issues, The Shadow has known what evil lurks in the hearts of men. To commemorate, Dynamite Entertainment brings together master storytellers to celebrate the purveyor of justice who proves that crime does not pay. Some of the best writers out there, and classic Shadow alumni, are paired with top artists, to show the weed of crime bears only bitter fruit!

”Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The shadow knows!!!”

This infamous line has been tied to this character as long as the character has been around, which has been a while. As the character has journeyed from pulp novels to radio plays to an ill-fated movie to its most recent reincarnation in comics, which has proven to be the best medium for this character. The series at Dynamite since its inception has brought some of the character’s most interesting story arcs as well as team-ups like Masks which, is basically the Noir version of the Avengers. It is only fitting that for the 100th issue, that the character gets the royal treatment from some of the industry’s best.

In the first story, “The Laughing Corpse”, expertly crafted by the great Francesco Francavilla (Afterlife with Archie) a murder of a well-known scientist has occurred, found in an interesting disposition, dead with a smile on his face. Of course, the Shadow is on the case and is miles ahead of the police on this one. Francavilla‘s art and storytelling feels at home with the character, as he brings the pulp noir elements to the forefront, not only in his art but also his storytelling.

The second story, written by Victor Gischler and art by Stephen B Scott, is about a string of violent robberies, which the Shadow puts an end to. This story is pretty standard but very much is in the vein of what is true to the character.

The third story,”Black and White and Red all Over”, written and drawn by Howard Chaykin, tells the story of a mob hit on police detective, which the Shadow foils. This is an expertly written story by Chaykin, as this is the character and the writer/artist by at their best.

The fourth story, written by the great Michael Uslan and drawn by Giovanni Timpano, recreates the infamous Batman origin with a twist, having the Shadow intervene, while he also handles mind washing Orson Welles type of character. This to me was the standout story, not just because of the nostalgia it conjures, but how menacing he can be.

The final story , written and drawn by Matt Wagner, is primarily told form a petty criminal’s point of view, where accounts for the many times the Shadow, was always in the right place at the wrong time. He ultimately begins a partnership with the Shadow. This story seems right out of a movie, excellent character development on this one. Wagner even throws in a pulp noir story, which is the perfect homage to the Shadow’s beginnings.

Overall, a great collection of stories to commemorate a storied comic book character, who deserves more credit than he gets.
