Early Review: Redlands #1

Welcome to Redlands, Florida. The police are failing to maintain control of their old-fashioned town, and a coven of killer witches plan to take everything from them. This summer, hide your bibles.

Redlands is the new series from Jordie Bellaire and Vanesa R. Del Rey is creepy, really creepy as we’re dropped right in the middle of a siege as small town police are surrounded by witches who are sick of them. The first issue is all about setting the mood and Bellaire and Del Rey brilliantly do exactly that with much of what we learn being brought to the reader through subtle details added to each panel.

It’s those small details that make this first issue really stand out and deliver. All of the police officers are white, there’s a Confederate flag on the wall, those things tell as much of the story as everything else. The colors by Bellaire too help set the mood with reds, yellows, and oranges dominating the hue like a fire on the page. That coloring and grittiness of the art sets a hell of a mood and one that’s clear as to what the vision is.

There’s a sexiness about it all too, one of danger and forbiddeness. The series is driven by the occult ad and everything together sets a mood that has me wanting more. It all comes together to feel like the beginning of a nightmare whose story has already begun and whose mystery we will unweave and learn about over time.

Along with the art, Clayton Cowles‘ lettering plays a fantastic role in giving us a grit about what’s spoken but the inclusion of interesting angles (handled by Del Rey) for gun blasts and noises creates a sense of motion for the action. One particular scene with a “slam” written out, that sound’s lettering is presented in a way that’s fresh and helps drive where the action is taking place adding to the flow of movement presented. Along with Cowle’s dialogue lettering, the sound effects help add to the atmosphere and gives us a better idea about these characters and world.

I’m not the biggest horror fan, but Redlands #1 is a debut that has me wanting to check out more and delivers the opening moments that have me hooked to find out the rest of the story. The worst part was I enjoyed the comic so much that it went by quickly and now I’m left waiting quite some time to read the second issue (damn early reviews!). An absolute buy as it’s a fantastic combination of story and art that come together to create a creepiness that has me excited to see what’s next.

Toil and Trouble hits the Deep South in Redlands from Jordie Bellaire and Vanesa R. del Rey

First announced at Emerald City Comic Con, the new ongoing series Redlands—created by the all-female team of bestselling, Eisner award-winning Jordie Bellaire and critically-acclaimed Vanesa R. del Rey—will launch this August.

Redlands introduces readers to the sleepy, sunny town of Redlands, Florida where the police are failing to maintain control of their old-fashioned community and a coven of killer witches plan to take everything from them.

Marrying the sexy, witchy-goodness of Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott’s Black Magick and Melissa de la Cruz’s beloved Witches of East End with the deep-South atmosphere of Jason Aaron and Jason Latour’s Southern Bastards and American Horror Story: Coven, Redlands is set to be the horror series of the summer.

Redlands #1 (Diamond Code JUN170621) will hit stores on Wednesday, August 9th. The final order cutoff deadline for retailers is Monday, July 17th.

Morrison and Del Rey’s Sinatoro Gets Pick up by Universal Television

SinatoroUniversal Television, Depth Of Field, and Black Mask Studios are going out to directors with a drama television series based on the forthcoming Black Mask comic Sinatoro by Grant Morrison and Vanesa R. Del Rey from a pilot script by American Odyssey and Heroes’ Adam Armus, Kay Foster and Morrison. Depth Of Field’s Andrew Miano, Chris Weitz, and Paul Weitz and Black Mask Studios’ Matt Pizzolo and Brett Gurewitz will executive produce with Armus, Foster, Morrison, Kristan Morrison and Adam Egypt Mortimer. The team intends to partner with a director and then take to buyers with the studio.

The comic book series Sinatoro tells of a soldier on a strange mission that takes him into a sinister landscape of American mythologies, melding the Tibetan Book of the Dead with the Great American Road Movie for Morrison’s masterwork on Life, Death, and America. Armus, Foster, and Morrison’s script is a faithful adaptation of the long anticipated work that has been a passion project of Morrison’s for years.

In the release, Morrison said:

Sinatoro reimagines American pop culture as a whole new mythology. It’s about life, death, sex, romance and everything in between.  This is one of my favorite stories and I’m excited to see it finding new life as a television series where we have more opportunity and potential to develop the ideas and characters.

The comic series had been promoted since August of 2015, but hasn’t been released. Black Mask has said the comic will finally hit shelves in 2017.

SDCC 2016: BOOM!’s The Empty Man Adaptation Lands James Badge Dale

EmptyMan_TPB_coverIn the lead up to San Diego Comic-Con, it’s been announced by BOOM! Studios that James Badge Dale will be starring in the adaptation of The Empty Man. The movie is being adapted from the comic written by Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Vanesa R. Del Rey. The film is being directed by David Britten Prior and looks to begin filming in the fall in South Africa.

The film takes some departures from the comic series it’s based on:

It’s been one year since the first reported case of the Empty Man disease, and no drug has been able to slow its progress. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms include fits of rage, hideous hallucinations, suicidal dementia, followed by death, or a near lifeless, “empty” state of catatonia. As murder cults rise nationwide, the FBI and CDC enter a joint investigation of the Empty Man, hoping to piece together clues to stop the cult and uncover a cure.

The film is part of a first-look deal between Fox and BOOM! studios. BOOM!’s Ross Richie and Stephen Christy are producing the film.
