Pick(s) of the Week: Velvet #1 and so many more…

velvet01_coverWhen the world’s best secret agent is killed, Velvet Templeton, the Personal Assistant to the Director of the Agency, is drawn off her desk and back into the field for the first time in nearly 20 years… and is immediately caught in a web of mystery, murder and high-octane action.

Writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting is a match made in heaven with skills and styles that complement each other. They’ve shown what they can do with slow burn thrillers when they teamed up on Captain America: Winter Soldier and that similar style resurfaces here for an engaging and fun spy series set in the 1970s. With the two working on this new series, it was kind of hard to not have Velvet #1 top our picks for the week.

Sexy and provocative, with a dark twist on the spy genre, this EXTRA-LENGTH first issue by two of the industry’s best-selling creators will knock you out!

Check out below for more of our picks.

Brett:

Top Pick: Velvet #1 (Image Comics) – My thoughts are above, but I’ve read the first issue and it’s fantastic. A must buy for folks into spy-thrillers.

Bravest Warriors #13 (BOOM! Studios/KaBOOM!) – There are few comics that consistently get me to laugh out loud every single issue. This is a series perfect for the family, as long as all of the family is demented.

Death Sentence #2 (Titan Comics) – Monty Nero killed it on the first issue that saw a disease that grants you powers, but you also die in 6 months. The series looks like it’ll be an underground buzzed about book.

Samurai Jack #1 (IDW Publishing) – The cartoon classic comes to comics written by Jim Zub!

Uncanny #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Andy Diggle is giving us solid pulp/noirish fun in this series that mixes powers with a thriller.

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Wasteland Apocalyptic Edition Vol. 3 (Oni Press) – This post apocalyptic series is one that deserves much more praise from the crowd, but for some reason it continues to fly under the radar. You can catch up here with this massive volume.

Scott:

Top Pick: Pretty Deadly #1 (Image Comics) – I love me a western, and this book is set in the Wild West and the main character is Death’s daughter. What more could I ask for? The fact that it’s from Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios is just icing.

Velvet #1 (Image Comics) – In my eyes, as the creator of Criminal, Fatale, and Gotham Central, Ed Brubaker can do no wrong. Here we have him writing a series about a spy in the 1970s, which seems like something he’ll be great at. Plus, he’s back with his Captain America partner Steve Epting, which means that the story and art will exquisitely work together.

Sex Criminals #2 (Image Comics) – Matt Fraction is great at dialogue, so it comes as no surprise that the back and forth between the two main characters is so strong, entertaining, and inviting in a way that makes me want to read it over and over again.

Rat Queens #2 (Image Comics) – It’s just fun. The debut was fun; this issue is fun; it’s all fun. Ridiculous of course, but ridiculously fun. Did I mention how fun this series is?

Professional thief-for-hire Weaver is introduced to the mysterious arms dealer Deacon Styles, who has a proposition for him. All he has to do is steal a briefcase. Pick(s) of the Week: American Vampire Anthology #1 and a Bunch More!

AV_ANTHOLOGY_CVRfinal_stwjb2o9tn_There’s a hell of a lot of solid comics out this week, but none fill a fix like American Vampire Anthology #1. American Vampire has been on hiatus for a bit while writer Scott Snyder releases some awesome other comics (*cough* The Wake *cough*). So, to get a chance to get a bit of the mythos, even as an anthology, is quite ok with us.

This special features eight amazing stories set in the world of American Vampire, with “lost tales,” new characters and old favorites. So, don’t miss these stories brought to you by series creators Scott Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque, as well as other awesome comics talent like Becky Cloonan, Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, Jeff Lemire, Greg Rucka, Gail Simone and many more!

You are cordially invited to a party—to die for!

Catch our full list of picks below!

Andrew:

Top Pick: King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon #4 (Dark Horse) – Conan claws his way from the depths to regain his throne. The inside is as good as the outside’s award-worthy cover art, trust me.

Miss Fury #5 (Dynamite) – There’s something about a seductive billionaire heiress with super powers who battles time traveling nazis that keeps me coming back for more. Can’t quite put my finger on it…

Overtaken #1 (Aspen) – Most Aspen series, much to my dismay, have the same look and feel to me, but this newest one appears different from the rest. While the abducted loved one is a familiar story, I’m anxious to see their take on it.

Uncanny #3 (Dynamite) – The god-awful cover aside, Andy Diggle’s thief-with-powers crime story is a great read, and it’s not too late to start from the beginning.

Brett:

Top Pick: American Vampire Anthology (Vertigo) – See above as to why I think this’ll be awesome and well worth the price tag.

The Massive #15 (Dark Horse) – Brian Wood continues to knock it out of the park with each issue and somehow the series is only getting better.

Occupy Comics #3 (Black Mask Studios) – Politics = comics = awesome. So much talent packed into one issue.

Overtaken #1 (Aspen) – The $1 price tag should be enough of a reason to pick it up, but Aspen is giving us what seems to be an interesting story about possible abduction by aliens.

Uncanny #3 (Dynamite) – Super powers + crime = this. The first two issues were intriguing and the third really starts to ramp up the storyline and give us an idea as to where it’s going next.

Scott:

Top Pick: American Vampire Anthology #1 (Vertigo) – I love this series and it’s been torture waiting for it to come back, but this anthology written and illustrated by an amazing list of creators should be a phenomenal way to ease back into the AV world.

Lazarus #3 (Image) – After last month’s excellent world building issue, I can’t wait for this arc to pick up some steam. Plus, we get to meet another Lazarus, and the dynamic between he and Faith should be fascinating.

Sean:

Top Pick: Batman/Superman #3 (DC Comics) – This has been an incredible, confusing book so far. And, hot damn, what’s Wonder Woman doing?!

Batman, Inc. Special #1 (DC Comics) – With the end of Grant Morrison’s famed and infamous run on Batman, it’s time to see where other writers will take these characters…including Bat-Cow!

Larfleeze #3 (DC Comics) – Keith Giffen is one of my favorite writers, and Larfleeze is funny as hell. If you like Douglas Adams or funny sci-fi, you’ll want to check this out!

And maybe, just maybe, he isn’t so unique after all…

Uncanny is a brand new series, launching as part of Dynamite‘s “crime/noir” line of comics. I went into the first issue thinking I’d expect something reminiscent of the departed Vertigo Crime line of comics. Writer Andy Diggle had contributed a release to that line of comics, so it’s awesome to see him here. He’s often at his best when tackling this genre. I’m a huge fan of the genre myself, so my expectations are usually rather high.

With all that said, this series is pretty uncanny. It’s a “crime comic” but there’s the twist of Weaver’s abilities which adds a fun factor. There’s a risk of it becoming a crutch to get him out of situations, but in the first issue Diggle uses it effectively and you know it’s going to take us somewhere interesting as the series progresses. The setting is cool. Characters are interesting. The dialogue/writing fun.

On top of all of that Aaron Campbell’s art fits the genre and writing. It’s a great team and match. There’s also the two covers by superstar artists Jock and Sean Phillips to draw you in.

I’m a fan of this type of comic and for a first issue, this is a solid beginning with solid action and pacing. The comic’s fun and entertaining, can’t wait to see where it goes.
