God Hates Astronauts Touches Down in October

Ryan Browne‘s God Hates Astronauts, coming this October from Image Comics, is outrageous, raunchy, absurd, violent, extremely popular, and everything you could want in a comic. NASA hires the Power Persons 5 to keep the nation’s farmers from launching themselves into space in homemade rocket ships. The bad news is that NASA is wasting their money, because this gang of hooligans is going to hang out, get drunk, have extra-marital affairs, and occasionally save the day in spite of themselves.

God Hates Astronauts began life six years ago as a comic written and drawn over the course of 24 hours, resulting in a madcap and free-wheeling pace and approach to storytelling. After that, Browne published God Hates Astronauts as a webcomic. Now, the softcover collection of God Hates Astronauts includes not just a fully remastered edition of the original webcomic, but one hundred pages of rare and all-new material not available on the web.

There are 21 pin-ups from artists like Chris Burnham, Rebekah Isaacs, Tom Fowler, Mike Norton, and more. The two original 24-hour comics are included, along with a reference guide that explains the parodies and inside jokes, and 18 all-new two-page origin stories written by Browne and drawn by some of the best talent in comics, including Tradd Moore, Tim Seeley, Riley Rossmo, Tom Scioli, Nick Pitarra, C.P. Wilson III, Zander Cannon, Jenny Frison, Chris Mitten, and Hilary Barta.

God Hates Astronauts will be in stores on October 9 and is currently available to pre-order from the August issue of Previews (Diamond Code AUG130620).

Zero Delves into the Effects of War

In an interview, writer Ales Kot has said:

War is a disease, and it seems that a large part of humanity is obsessed with it.

The writer of comics that range from the stream-of-consciousness apocalyptic tale Change to DC Comics’ Suicide Squad draws on this point of view, developed in his native Czech Republic, for his new series Zero, out from Image Comics in September.

I’ve seen, first-hand, what kind of damage war inflicts on people, and how often the wounds become obscured as the decades progress.

Zero is named for its main character, secret agent Edward Zero, a sociopath who solves problems with violence, a perfect execution machine. He’s built his life around certain principles, but ZERO is the story of what happens when his carefully maintained systems break down and Zero must fight not just a war out in the world but one within himself as well.

Each issue will end with this internal struggle producing an indelible change in Zero, and so each issue will be drawn by a different artist. The first issue, in which Zero encounters a bioengineered terrorist whose body is a bomb, is drawn by Michael Walsh, who previously worked on the time travel Image series Comeback, written by Ed Brisson.

Subsequent issues will be drawn by comics stars like Mateus Santolouco, Morgan Jeske, Tradd Moore, and Tonci Zonjic. Kot will write each issue based on the strengths of the artist, and the series will be colored by Jordie Bellaire.

Zero #1 is available for pre-order in the July issue of Previews (Diamond code JUL130415). Variant covers by Becky Cloonan (JUL130416) and Chris Burnham (JUL130417) are also available for pre-order.

The Legend Lives On. Luther Strode Gets 2nd Printing.

The eponymous Luther Strode makes his first appearance in the The Legend of Luther Strode #1 as a fist bursting through a closed door — and through a man’s head. Justin Jordan‘s and Tradd Moore‘s creation, first introduced to the world in 2011 in The Strange Talent of Luther Strode has come far indeed. Now, The Legend of Luther Strode #1 has sold out at the distributor level and will receive a second printing (NOV128050), to be in stores on January 9.

The first issue of the second volume of the series continues the over the top series is fantastic. I loved the first volume, it was just kung-fu fantastic with violence that was splattering fun, and art that matched it’s kinetic blasts.

The first issue of the second volume continued with the awesome picking up right after the first and upping the action and the legend. If your store is sold out of this first issue, do yourself a favor and grab this reprint when it hit stores in January.
