Many within the comics industry are taking a stand and speaking out against harassment and the continued protection of those who engage in it. One reason individuals don’t speak out is over fear that they will be blacklisted and not supported by publishers (and fans). So, along with our vocally supporting these creators we as a community need to also show we also have their back financially.

This isn’t a complete list so please add individuals missed in the comments below.

Sophie Campbell is quoted in the recent Buzzfeed article as have turned down Supergirl due to editor Eddie Berganza. That’s beyond stand-up and shows true conviction. Check out her work on Jem and the Holograms, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Wet Moon, and more.

Joshua Hale Fialkov is a writer who worked with DC on the series I, Vampire (among others). He reportedly left the company over a disagreement about killing Green Lantern John Stewart. He’s written awesome series like The Bunker, Tumor, The Life After, and most recently Jeff Steinberg: Champion of Earth.

Kwanza Osajyefo is one of the creators behind the recently released in trade paperback Black. Not only is he outspoken but also a target for degenerate comic “fans” who only want to take us backwards. That hasn’t stopped him down from speaking out.

Christopher Sebela is the writer behind the upcoming Cold War from AfterShock Comics, Heartthrob, We(l)come Back, High Crimes, and more.

Tony Isabella is one of the co-creators of Black Lightning for DC Comics. Maybe grab one of his classic trades to prepare for the new CW television show or the recent Black Lighting: Cold Dead Hands #1.

Jennifer de Guzman has been one of the most outspoken individuals when it comes to harassment in the comics industry. She’s written for numerous comics (like Womanthology: Space) and prose as well as a journalist. Buy her stuff and hire her!

Lilah Sturges is a writer of comics and fantasy novels having written Jack of Fables for Vertigo. You can also check out her work on Everafter.

Jonathan H. Gray is an artist who has done work on Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic Universe, Mega Man, as well as numerous work for Disney Comics.

Matthew Rosenberg is a comic writer who has published indie comics and also worked for Marvel and Archie. He was also part of the DC Writers Workshop Class of 2016. Go check out his 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank which was recently released as a trade paperback.

Kate Leth is a creator who has worked for Marvel, Dark Horse, BOOM!, Dynamite, IDW, and Image. Whatever you buy to support her, it’s going to be good.

Tamra Bonvillain is a colorist who has worked for DC, Marvel, Image and more on such titles as Doom Patrol, Wayward, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Uncanny Avengers, and more.

Tea Terry Blue is a digital project manager at King Features Syndicate, a co-editor of RAW Fanthology, and overall comic nerd. Go follow them since there’s tons of other folks speaking out too that Tea is spotlighting.

Ryan Ferrier has written comics such as D4ve, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, WWE, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and more.

Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands from Tony Isabella and Clayton Henry in November

We’re getting a lot of Black Lightning by the end of the year. Not only will Jefferson Pierce be seen on the small screen on The CW with a new live action television show, but the character will return to comics in a six-issue miniserues by Tony Isabella, who originally created the character with Trevor Von Eeden. Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands is being written by Isabella and drawn by Clayton Henry.

Don’t expect a throwback to Isabella’s previous time with the character. While the hallmarks of a good Black Lightning comic are all there, Jefferson’s gone through some changes. He’s still a teacher who works to be a positive force for his students both in and out of costume, but he’s younger than he’s ever been before—around 28 years old. He’s also not married and in a departure from the show, he doesn’t have daughters.

Jefferson does, however, still have a very big problem by the name of Tobias Whale. But Black Lightning’s notorious adversary has gone through some redesigning as well. He’s now fit, built like an athlete, and he’s no longer an albino. But don’t think it’s made Tobias Whale any smaller of a problem for Jefferson or the city of Cleveland, in which the series is based. He’s as ruthless and powerful as ever.

The first issue is out November 1 with a cover by Henry and variant cover by Ken Lashley.

Gerry Conway Dishes on the Creation of Black Lightning

black_lightning1News broke recently that Greg Berlanti was working on a Black Lightning television show. Today it’s reported that the show has been picked up by Fox. That seems to have prompted comic legend Gerry Conway to Tweet out some history about the character.

Debuting in 1977 at DC Comics, the character’s creators are credited as Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden. But Conway indicates that’s not the whole story and that Bob Kanigher deserves some credit as well. Kanigher is primarily known as the creator of Sgt. Rock.

Isabella took exception to some of Conway’s recollections responding on Twitter:

Open Mouth, Insert Foot, Part Infinity

For what it’s worth (since I can’t seem to comment directly on Tony Isabella’s Facebook post, I’ll post my response to it here) I’m perfectly willing to admit my memory of events is faulty. I constantly am asked questions about things that I wrote forty to fifty years ago and I’m often embarrassed to admit I don’t remember. I wrote a lot of stuff, did a lot of stuff, offended a lot of people, and hopefully supported many others. One fact I am sure about, is that memory is fungible and affected by many factors. Honestly, my memory of the sequence of events is different from Tony’s, but given his firm adherence to his version, I accept it totally and offer my apologies. Rather than diminish Tony’s work (though that was the outcome) I simply wanted to acknowledge Bob Kanigher’s. In my memory there was more of a direct connection between Kanigher’s creation (which we backed away from as soon as he delivered those first scripts, and tried to fix but absolutely couldn’t) and the Black Lightning that came after. I feel protective of the older forgotten writers of the 60s, especially Kanigher, who was treated horribly by DC at the time (though no worse than Bill Finger, Gardner Fox, and Bob Haney) when the company replaced them with a new generation of writers like me. In my desire to gain justice for Bob I did a major injustice to Tony. Obviously I was wrong. Sorry, Tony.
