IDW Founder & CEO Ted Adams Joins the CBLDF Board of Directors

The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting First Amendment rights, has announced that Ted Adams has joined its Board of Directors. As founder and CEO of IDW Media Holdings, Adams oversees one of the nation’s leading comics publishing brands whose dedication to developing new readers, preserving comics history, and providing avenues for important creative voices to flourish aligns with CBLDF’s important work of protecting the freedom to read comics.

Adams’s addition to the CBLDF Board of Directors bolsters the organization’s efforts to protect First Amendment rights of readers, creators, librarians, retailers, publishers, and educators who face the threat of censorship. Adams joins creators Reginald Hudlin, the iconic writer, producer and director behind films including Marshall, Django Unchained and the Black Panther animated series; three-time Newbery honoree Jennifer L. Holm; celebrated comics authors and executives Paul Levitz and Larry Marder; Bone creator Jeff Smith; as well as industry leaders Jeff Abraham, president of Penguin Random House Publisher Services; legendary IP litigator Dale Cendali, a Partner at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP; ICv2 CEO Milton Griepp; Sequential Tart founder Katherine Keller; DCBS Service co-owner Christina Merkler, and Chris Powell, VP Retailer Services at Diamond Comics Distributors, in serving on the Fund’s Board in direct oversight of its activities protecting the freedom to read.

For more than thirty years, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has protected the First Amendment rights of comics field and developed powerful education efforts in the service of the community. In 2017, CBLDF responded to more than thirty censorship cases while developing important resources including Panel Power – a handbook for parents about the value of comics in encouraging literacy. In 2018, the Fund will maintain its readiness in legal emergencies, while developing new programs, including Retailer Rights Workshops, a touring series of training events for comic store staff that illuminates the law and best practices for protecting the right to sell creative content.

Full Bleed, a New Quarterly Magazine from IDW:PDX’s Woodworks

IDW Publishing‘s Dirk Wood announced the first project to come out of the publisher’s new Portland office and Woodworks imprint at Rose City Comic Con this past weekend, getting strong positive reactions for both the art and content revealed, and a unique distribution plan. Premiering today on Kickstarter is the new division’s flagship publication: Full Bleed!

Full Bleed is a brand-new quarterly, print-only, 200-page hardcover magazine, curated and edited by IDW Publishing’s Dirk Wood alongside CEO and Publisher, Ted Adams. Bringing together the very best in comics, fiction, non-fiction, in-depth interviews, opinion, history, think-pieces, and more, Full Bleed will be a reading experience like no other. Shot through an international lens, but filtered through the unique perspective of the IDW:PDX satellite office in Portland, Oregon, Full Bleed will tackle all aspects of the creative culture, and beyond — comics, music, film, television, fine art, photography, design, politics, and more. Full Bleed seeks true and total diversity through its content, creators and contributors, as well as genre and format.

Full Bleed is the premiere publication from IDW’s new Oregon-based imprint; Woodworks. Following the December launch, IDW and Woodworks will be creating a campaign to help Traveling Stories, a charity dedicated to children’s literacy and “outsmarting poverty one book at a time,” as well as the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, to help with their continued work for literacy and libraries. Woodworks aims to make “smart books for smart people,” with the hope of “helping to make a few more smart people.”

IDW Entertainment Developing The Devil with Ellen Pompeo’s Calamity Jane

the-devilIDW Entertainment has announced it has put The Devil into development as a big event limited series with Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo’s Calamity Jane co-producing. Dave Dilley has been tapped to write the pilot and serve as an Executive Producer.

The series is based on the novel The Devil: Britain’s Most Feared Underworld Taxman by Graham Johnson. Set in Liverpool in the 1980’s, The Devil showcases the life of Stephen French, one of the most feared men in the criminal underworld in the UK. He earned both his nickname and a reputation amongst rival crime-lords who he would outwit and rob during the emerging drug trade of the 1980s. The infamous criminal mastermind’s notorious life will be explored in this dark and gripping series.

In addition to Dilley, Calamity Jane’s Ellen Pompeo and Laura Holstein will serve as Executive Producers alongside IDW Publishing CEO and Publisher Ted Adams and IDW Entertainment President David Ozer. The Grey’s Anatomy star Pompeo, initially found and optioned the material.

The Devil will follow other IDW Entertainment properties whereby IDW Publishing will develop and publish graphic novels.
