Dive into the world of Mech Cadets, the animated series launches today on Netflix

Mech Cadets, an animated series based on the BOOM! Studios comic book series Mech Cadet Yu by writer Greg Pak and artist Takeshi Miyazawa, premieres on Netflix today! The comic series features colorist Triona Farrell, and letterer Simon Bowland.

Set fifty years in the future after a terrifying alien species attacked our planet, teenager Stanford Yu works as a janitor at the Sky Corps Military Academy. But he’s only dreamed of one thing his entire life — to pilot a Robo Mech, giant robots from outer-space who came to our aid. When he finally gets his shot, Stanford and his classmates must put aside all personal differences and work together as a team in order to defend humanity against a new invasion of aliens.

The series is executive produced by BOOM! Studios, Japanese studio Polygon Pictures Inc., and Aaron Lam who serves as the writer and an executive producer of the series.

Mech Cadets #1 is a solid jumping on point

Mech Cadets #1

General Park–head of Sky Corps Academy–must assemble a team of heroes to protect humankind from alien invasions, and Stanford Yu, Maya Sanchez, Frank Olivetti, and Park’s own daughter Olivia may have been pulled into the role by fate… as they are Earth’s best hope. Mech Cadets #1 is the kick-off follow up to Mech Cadet Yu, the fantastic debut series.

Written by Greg Pak, Mech Cadets #1 picks up not long after the initial series. The team of cadets are riding high from their victory but their lack of following orders has created a situation where they’re on a short leash. Their celebration is short, as they have to deal with emergencies that piss off their leaders even more. It’s a solid start to the series, catching up new readers and continuing the excellent path from the previous volume.

Pak sets things up nicely and you know where it’ll go. With an emphasis on the team ignoring orders, you know that will come back in a negative way with some disaster happening due to it. But, it also creates a fun brashness about it all where these mecha pilots come off as hot shots instead of stiff soldiers. It pits youth against adults and the result is entertainment.

There’s absolutely a difference in philosophy here and Pak emphasizes that in the initial mission that has the team dealing with flooding and looting. That bit is a bit choppy and some of it doesn’t make complete sense but overall it moves the narrative along well and plants the flag in a lot of ways.

The art by Takeshi Miyazawa is solid. There’s a nice aspect to the comic where it feels like mecha and kaiju for younger readers. That’s not a bad thing at all as it makes the comic a bit more younger reader friendly and overall fits the youthful focus on the story. Miyazawa is joined by Ian Herring on color and Simon Bowland on lettering and it overall creates a comic that’s visually as full of energy as its characters are. The robot designs are solid and the kids each have a lot of personality in their body language and actions. The action as a whole is solid with the last segment of the comic really amping it up.

Mech Cadets #1 is such a welcome return of the series. Though it’s been a bit, it feels like no time has passed and we’re on to another adventure taking on alien invaders. If you have never read the series, pick up this issue and when you’re done, you’ll want to go back and see what you missed. Can’t wait to read more and see where things are going.

Every four years, giant sentient robots from outer space come to Earth and bond forever with a brand new crop of Sky Corps Academy cadets.

But this time, instead of a cadet, one mech bonds with Stanford Yu, a young kid working with his mom as a janitor at Sky Corps.

This is the opportunity of a lifetime for Stanford, but first he’ll have to earn the trust of his classmates and survive an uncompromising enemy…the Sharg!

Bestselling author Greg Pak (Ronin Island, Planet Hulk) and fan-favorite artist Takeshi Miyazawa (Runaways, Ms. Marvel) bring to life this underdog story as Stanford and the newest team of Cadets and Robos face relentless training, an alien invasion, and the threat of losing themselves and human existence.

They’ll realize the true sacrifice that comes with duty and service and what makes a hero in this full collection of Mech Cadets perfect as a jumping on point ahead of the animated series on Netflix!

Mech Cadets Book 1

Daniel Dae Kim, Ming-Na Wen, Brandon Soo Hoo, Debra Wilson, and More Set to Star in Netflix’s Mech Cadets

Netflix Mech Cadets

BOOM! Studios and Polygon Pictures, Inc. have announced the star studded cast for the upcoming 3D animated series, Mech Cadets, streaming globally on Netflix August 10, 2023. Adapted from the bestselling BOOM! Studios comic series Mech Cadet Yu by acclaimed AAPI creators Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa, the series is set fifty years in the future, after a terrifying alien species attacked our planet, and follows teenager Stanford Yu who works as a janitor at the Sky Corps Military Academy. But he’s only dreamed of one thing his entire life — to pilot a Robo Mech, giant robots from outer-space who came to our aid. When he finally gets his shot, Stanford and his classmates must put aside all personal differences and work together as a team in order to defend humanity against a new alien invasion.

The ten-episode series hails from Japanese Animation studio Polygon Pictures Inc., whose credits include Star Wars: Resistance, Apple TV+’s Emmy Award-winning Stillwater, and Love, Death, + Robots for Netflix. The first episode of the series is an official selection of 2023’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival in the TV Films Competition category.

Brandon Soo Hoo stars as Stanford Yu, a scrappy teenage underdog working as a janitor at Sky Corps who dreams of being a Robo Pilot.

Daniel Dae Kim plays General Aiden Park, the battle-hardened leader of Sky Corps Academy and the Mech Cadet program. As a father of one of the cadets and a General he expects nothing short of perfection from his daughter and his soldiers.

Ming-Na Wen plays Dolly Yu, Stanford’s loving, if a bit overprotective, mother and the calm head of the janitorial team at Sky Corps.

Debra Wilson plays Chief Max, a former Robo pilot, head of Engineering at Sky Corps, and mentor to the trainees.

Rounding out the cast are: Aparna Brielle as Ava Patel, Victoria Grace as Olivia Park, Josh Sundquist as Frank Olivetti, Anairis Quinones as Maya Sanchez, and James Yaegashi as Captain Tanaka.

Aaron Lam serves as head writer and executive producer for the series. Tohru Patrick Awa is the supervising director. Mech Cadets is executive produced by Shuzo John Shiota and Jack Liang for Polygon Pictures, Inc., and Stephen Christy and Ross Richie for BOOM! Studios. BOOM!’s Mette Norkjaer is co-executive producer of the series and Polygon’s Bill E. Miller serves as producer.
