Free Comic Book Day 2023: Discover Greg Pak and Takeshi Miyazawa’s Mech Cadets before the Netflix show!

For this year’s Free Comic Book Day, BOOM! Studios is giving you a chance to discover Mech Cadets Yu with the Mech Cadets 2023 FCBD Special. It’s a free special issue from highly acclaimed writer Greg Pak, artist Takeshi Miyazawa, colorist Triona Farrell, and letterer Simon Bowland, the exclusive free reprint of the very first Mech Cadet Yu issue, soon to be a television show on Netflix.

Archie 1941 #1 (Archie Comics) – Archie hasn’t been one to dive into real world issues but this new series takes on the Riverdale kids as the US ramps up for World War II. A great concept that should be something new and interesting.

Cemetery Beach #1 (Image Comics) – Warren Ellis and Jason Howard team up again and the creative team alone has us interested in this series about a professional pathfinder.

Crowded #2 (Image Comics) – The series about a world driven by apps and jobs driven by them, including one that allows you to buy assassinations, is great so far. That ending of the first issue had us even more excited for what’s next.

Fantastic Four #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was amazing and a fantastic return for Marvel’s first family. We want to know more about where everyone’s been over these years.

House of Whispers #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – The Sandman universe is back and we’re intrigued to check out this second series to spin out of it.

Iceman #1 (Marvel) – The first volume was great and writer Sina Grace will hopefully recapture the magic of it.

Infinity Wars #3 (Marvel) – Folks don’t seem to like events but they keep buying them. This event has beaten our expectations and so much better than any of the lead up.

Journey Into Mystery: Birth of Krakoa #1 (Marvel) – We’re hoping for a throwback to the weird sci-fi comics of the past.

Low Road West #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A nuclear strike has left the East Coast uninhabitable and five teens are sent west away from the wreckage that was their home. They’re stuff in the Oklahoma Dust Bowl and are fighting to survive. The concept sounds fantastic and we’re completely sold on it.

Marvel Rising Omega #1 (Marvel) – DC’s Superhero Girls has been a fantastic line and we’ll see if Marvel can pull off that magic with their own characters.

Mech Cadet Yu #12 (BOOM! Studios) – The series wraps up and has been amazing every step of the way. We want more!

MCMLXXV #1 (Image Comics) – Meet Pamela Evans. Much more than a typical Manhattan cab driver, she also happens to be a badass monster-fighter who wields an enchanted tire iron. Well ok then!

Moth & Whisper #1 (Vault Comics) – The city’s best theives has disappeared and been replaced by their daughter?! The concept sounds very interesting and definitely unique!

Mystery Science Theater 3000 #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – The classic television comes to comics. Will it translate? We’ll find out!

The Nameless City Vol. 3 Divided Earth (First Second) – An excellent all-ages graphic novel series that mixes fantasy with martial arts.

Newbury & Hobbes #1 (Titan Comics) – The mystery novels come to comics.

Poser #1 (Waxwork Comics) – A horror slasher story with a music twist and it has an original soundtrack? Yeah, we’re sold on this one.

Ruinworld #3 (BOOM! Studios) – The first two issues of this all-ages fantasy series has been fantastic so we’re excited to read more of this webcomic turned physical comic.

Welcome to Wanderland #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new twist on fairytales and the coming of age story.

The Wrong Earth #1 (AHOY Comics) – The kick-off series to the new comic publisher, this sendup of superhero comics has us excited. AHOY has promised more to their comics and this is our first chance to see what that’s all about.

WWE NXT Takeover – Proving Ground #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Wresting fan? Then this is a must!

Top Pick: Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel) – FINALLY! Fantastic Four was the first comic book I ever read and it ignited my passion for comic books. I collected this title for years and was crushed when it was cancelled. I am beyond excited that Marvel’s first family is coming back and I can’t wait to read their new adventures.

Top Pick: The Sandman Universe #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – This is it, the return of the classic comic universe! I can’t say I ever read the originals, but I’m fascinated to see what this new entry is like and the new series spinning out of this universe.

Black Badge #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins alone are draws for this new series.

Farmhand #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was weird in all the right ways where a farm now grows human parts. Funny in so many ways, this is one that’s just strange enough to keep us intrigued.

Hot Lunch Special #1 (AfterShock Comics) – I couldn’t tell you a single thing about what this series is about. I just know writer Eliot Rahal is writing it and since he consistently entertains me, I’m excited to check it out.

Long Live Pro Wrestling #0 (Scout Comics) – Wrestling in comics is becoming a big thing again and this one sounds unique as it follows a former wrestler turned talk show host which sounds like it could stand out.

Mech Cadet Yu #11 (BOOM! Studios) – I love this seres of kids piloting giant mechs fighting off aliens. This isn’t the issue to start but I will constantly recommend this series.

Oblivion Song by Kirman and De Felici #6 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – This sci-fi series stands out not for the concept/aliens, but the focus on the impact of a catastrophic event. There’s an exploration of PTSD and trauma that’s subtle (and some times not so much) but something we just don’t see in comics much today.

Outpost Zero #2 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – The first issue was the tense build up of a disaster film. A little mix of a lot of concepts, the center of it all is key, grown up kids who are experiencing it all in their own way. An interesting enough first issue I’m excited to check out the second.

Transformers: Lost Light #22/Transformers: Optimus Prime #22/Transformers: Unicron #3 (IDW Publishing) – The three series come together to deal with the threat that us Unicron. While some are a bit behind the main story, they’re all important in their own way and the bigger picture that’s happening is amazing. This is years of storyline finally converging to one big event and who knows what will happen when it’s all over.

Top Pick: Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel) – The first family of comics is back! It’s long overdue, I mean even DC formed The Terrifics in their absence with a different but in the same mold as our science loving explorers. So pumped to see what Slott and company has in store.

The Sandman Universe #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – Another classic and beloved series returns this week. I have high hopes for this book and the four ongoing series it will kick off. It’s Gaiman’s world, we just play in it!

Plastic Man #3 (DC Comics) – While I wish this was an ongoing, I am still looking forward to every issue. It’s such ridiculous fun and mystery.

Superman #2 (DC Comics) – Let’s see what Bendis and company has in store as these issues pile up. I enjoyed both starts to this and Action, and am hopeful the momentum continues. Great start so far.

The Amazing Spider-Man #3 (Marvel) – Spencer and Ottley have done a great job with the first two issues, and I am loving the story with The Lizard, and the school. I can’t wait as the rogues gallery grows, because to me, much like Batman, that’s when Spidey is at its best.

The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) – Dan Slott’s historic run is done and we’ve got a new creative team headed up by writer Nick Spencer. While Spencer has stumbled a lot lately, in numerous ways, his work on Superior Foes of Spider-Man was excellent. If we get more of that, then this will be a great run.

Come Again (Top Shelf/IDW Publishing) – Nate Powell’s new graphic novel. That’s all you need to know to say you need to get this.

Farmhand #1 (Image Comics) – Rob Guillory gave us some interesting concepts in Chew and it sounds like this one, a farmer who grows organs, will be just as off the wall.

Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2 #1 Crisis Midlife & Stories (Dark Horse Comics) – Love the movies? We’re excited to get more of this world.

Mech Cadet Yu #10 (BOOM! Studios) – If you haven’t been reading this series, giant mechs and their kid pilots fight aliens, then you’ve been missing out. Enjoy the battles and drama or dive deeper into the concept of a military that uses children and aliens to do battle. It’s layered and so good.

Oblivion Song #5 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – Much like Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead, Oblivion Song is about the characters and how a world has changed than the threat. It’s about trauma and PTSD. It’s so far fantastic.

Outpost Zero #1 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – Skybound has been putting out some fantastic new series and this one sounds like an interesting one about the smallest town in the universe.

Ruinworld #1 (KaBOOM!/BOOM! Studios) – A new fantasy series that just looks awesome.

She Could Fly #1 (Berger Books/Dark Horse Comics) – The new Berger Books series focuses on a mysterious flying woman who suddenly explodes. Who was she? The concept sounds really intriguing and we want to find out more about this mystery.

Superman #1 (DC Comics) – Brian Michael Bendis’ Superman run really kicks off with this new ongoing series and the first issue picks up the pieces of The Man of Steel.

Transformers: Lost Light #20/Transformers: Optimus Prime #20/Transformers: Unicron #1 (IDW Publishing) – IDW’s end game for Transformers is beginning. We’ve been big fans of their entire run and can’t wait to see how it all wraps up.

Voltron: Legendary Defender Vol. 3 #1 (Lion Forge Comics) – Fan of the animated series? Check this out! It’s a great new take on the classic toy and animated line.

X-23 #1 (Marvel) – She’s back to being X-23 and we want to see where this new series takes Laura and how it makes her again stand out from the pack.

Review: Mech Cadet Yu #9

Skip and the cadets take the fight to the Sharg, in outer space!

There’s that moment in the film where the young characters and alien are torn apart. E.T. Iron Giant. They have those moments and it’s at those times I find myself choking up a bit. Mech Cadet Yu #9 is that moment in the story.

The battle has been taken to the Sharg and it looks desperate. Writer Greg Pak has set things up perfectly so that we the readers not only have an emotional attach but we also feel the dread and epic nature of it all. This feels like an extinction level event and the odds are stacked against Earth.

It also feels like that last stand moment where the hero stays behind and sacrifices themself to make sure the bomb goes off the stop the bad guys. Except in this case, everyone feels like they’re in that role. Despite theis being a comic full of children there’s a sense that anyone can die here and I truly had no idea who would and who wouldn’t if any.

But what’s more interesting is that Pak puts these heroes in the middle of two sides of bad. There’s the evil bugs (who get a really nice twist reveal) and then there’s the military who want to murder the friendly robots. There’s a desperation that permeates the issue in so many ways. How to defeat the aliens and our heroes doing what they can with a ragtag force.

The art by Takeshi Miyazawa with color by Jessica Kholinne is fantastic as always. The mixture of alien robots and aliens, the organic and inorganic just blends so well. There’s some twists when it comes to that as well and it works really well visually. Each robot continues to have so much personality themselves and a lot of that is how they’re drawn. They don’t have the emotional range of humans but somehow we still know what they’re feeling through their physical actions.

The issue continues the blend of the adult and the kid. You can enjoy this adventure as giant robots and kids versus aliens but then there’s also this layer of militarization and sending children to war. We also get an emotional rollercoaster of an issue with ups and downs throughout. At one moment you want to celebrate victory and another it’s tragedy. The creative team toy with our emotions with perfect pacing and punches. This is a series I look forward to each month and Pak and Miyazawa keep delivering excellence with every issue.
