“STAR TREK: DISCOVERY” PANEL, FRIDAY, JULY 20, 1:30 PM, HALL H

Over 50 years ago, the world was first introduced to what would quickly become a cultural phenomenon. “Star Trek” inspired developments in science and technology, broke social barriers, and transported viewers around the globe to new adventures and uncharted frontiers. Last fall, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY continued that tradition and followed the voyages of Starfleet aboard the U.S.S. Discovery. Join the cast and producers of this CBS All Access series to look back on season one and find out where the crew is headed as it transports into its second season.

Cast members scheduled to appear include Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz, Mary Chieffo and Anson Mount, alongside executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin. The panel will be moderated by series guest star Tig Notaro, who will appear as Chief Engineer Reno. Friday, July 20, 1:30 PM; Hall H.

“STAR TREK: DISCOVERY” MIRROR UNIVERSE GALLERY TAKEOVER

CBS is creating a fully immersive Star Trek: Discovery Mirror Universe experience at the Michael J. Wolf Fine Arts Gallery (363 Fifth Avenue, San Diego); Comic-Con badges are not required for entry. The exhibit, scheduled to run fromThursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, features a photo opportunity with Emperor Georgiou’s Throne and showcases props and costumes from the series’ Terran Empire. The gallery will also house an official “Star Trek” shop with Comic-Con exclusives.

Exhibit Hours:

Friday 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Saturday 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Sunday 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

PEDICAB PROMOTION

From Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, CBS will offer free “intergalactic” rides throughout San Diego’s Gaslamp District in pedicabs inspired by the design of the U.S.S. Discovery’s captain’s chair. The pedicabs will feature the chair’s distinctive stitched black seats as well as video monitors built into its armrests, which will screen trailers for the highly anticipated second season. Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Joe

Top Pick: Marvel Two-in-One #2 (Marvel) – The Human Torch and The Thing, half of the Fantastic Four are searching for Reed, Sue, and the kids. This has such potential, and I enjoyed the first issue. This should give a massive nostalgia overload for older readers like myself, but also give enough excitement and exploration for the younger crowd.

Action Comics #996 (DC Comics) – We are getting so close to the 1000th issue, and this series has been a blast since Rebirth. I love the addition of Booster Gold recently, and the best Superman book keeps on going strong.

Abbott #1 (BOOM! Studios) – I like a good crime story, and this first issue of this new series that deals with a detective investigating the occult coming from BOOM looks very promising.

Doomsday Clock #3 (DC Comics) – Who’s watching the Watchmen? Apparently the DC Universe as the two combine for a series that has been very promising so far. Sure, this could fall flat on it’s face, but for now, I am enjoying everything, even if it is just for nostalgias sake.

Dissonance #1 (Image Comics) – I love a good sci-if tale, and this looks promising. It is always fun to jump on a new indie series, and we need more science fiction comics.

Jon

Top Pick: Abbott # 1 (BOOM! Studios) – A great example of what comics can be when every member of the team contributes the best of their talents. Abbott has all the makings of being the next Locke and Key.

Frankenstein Alive, Alive Trio (IDW Publishing) –  If you missed these three issues when they were printed years ago, IDW is giving you another chance to catch up before the long awaited final issue launches next month. This is a book that’s worth owning for Bernie Wrightson’s art alone and is probably the best value for money you’re going to find at the comic shop this week or any other.

Hungry Ghosts #1 (Dark Horse/Berger Books) – Either Karen Berger or Anthony Bourdain would have been enough for me to give this book a shot but having both attached made it an absolute must-read. I can’t recommend it to everyone (see my full review for details) but for people looking for a horror anthology inspired by Japanese ghost stories its a nice taste of what Dark Horse’s new Berger Book’s imprint has in store.

Raven: Daughter of Darkness # 1 (DC Comics) – Raven was never a character I had much interest in or knowledge of but this book has me hooked for at least a couple more issues. It doesn’t even matter that I missed last year’s mini series. Marv Wolfman manages to use plenty of the tools that made old comics so accessible to new readers without the storytelling ever feeling too retro.

The Demon: Hell is Earth #3 (DC Comics) – This six issue limited series continues to be a fun take on one of my favorite characters with a twisted sense of humor and great visuals.

Alex

Top Pick: Ninja-K #3 (Valiant) – Although I enjoyed the previous series the title character starred in, Ninjak, the current series is everything I could want in a comic and more. The art is fantastic, and secondary only to the exquisite writing from Christos Gage. I love this series’ look at the murky history of the Ninja Programme, and at the history only hinted at thus far.

Doomsday Clock #3 (DC Comics) – I still haven’t decided if I expect this to be a train wreck of epic proportions, or somewhat enjoyable… but I’m looking forward to finding out.

X-O Manowar #11 (Valiant) – Now that the opening three arcs are over, I’m really looking forward to seeing what Matt Kindt does with Aric now that he rules an entire planet (or, rather, is failing miserably at ruling a planet). One could argue there’s real world parallels to people interfering in local politics and royally fucking the local situation up while acting the savior, but there’s more meat on that bone than I have space for here.

Brett

Top Pick: Southern Bastards #19 (Image Comics) – Any time an issue comes out it’s at the top of my read list. It’s been an amazing series and I don’t mind the gap at all as every issue delivers an emotional punch.

Avengers #677 (Marvel) – “No Surrender” has been excellent so far so I’m all in for this weekly series.

Detective Comics #973 (DC Comics) – Things are falling apart for the team in this finale of the latest arc. I’ve really wanted to see how this one ends.

Legion #1 (Marvel) – After the excellence of the television series, I’m intrigued to see what this limited comic series does.

Star Trek: Discovery #2 (IDW Publishing) – I’ve really enjoyed the television series so to get more in this world has me happy. The first issue added some depth so looking forward to the second to see what it does.

Eaglemoss Collections Gives a First Look at the Ships of Star Trek: Discovery

Hot on the heels of the return of the hit series Star Trek: Discovery to CBS All Access, Eaglemoss Collections is proud to offer fans a chance to check out the all-new ship designs joining the U.S.S. Shenzhou NCC-1227 and U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031 in the Official Star Trek: Discovery Starships Collection.

Currently on display, renderings of the 12 ships that make up the first wave of models in the collection are each based on the original VFX models created for the show. They include 7 Federation ships (including the U.S.S. Kerala NCC-1255, U.S.S. Yeager NCC-1437 and U.S.S. Europa NCC-1648) and 5 Klingon vessels (including the reimagined Klingon Bird-of-Prey and Qugh Class Destroyer).

These renderings serve as the basis for the creation of the die-cast models themselves, painstakingly reproduced under the supervision of Star Trek expert Ben Robinson and officially authorized by CBS Studios. Averaging 8” to 10” from bow to stern, each ship in this special collection is incredibly detailed, cast in a specially formulated metallic resin and hand painted for accuracy.

Each ship also comes with a display base, as well as an exclusive collector’s magazine featuring behind the scenes info, original design sketches and a breakdown of technology on board.

Fans who subscribe to the collection will receive their first ship – the U.S.S. Shenzhou NCC-1227 – for only $9.95 with FREE shipping. Additional models – including the iconic U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031 – will then ship monthly for the special subscriber’s price of only $44.95 each (20% off the standard retail price), also with FREE shipping.

Subscribers are also entitled to free gifts worth over $100 and may cancel their subscriptions at any time. You can find out more online.

Fans who’d like to purchase their favorite ships individually may do so either online or at their local comic book shop for the regular price of $54.95 each.

Review: Star Trek: Discovery #1

Warp into adventure with this new comic book series that ties into the new Star Trek television show, Star Trek: Discovery. Co-written by Mike Johnson and Kirsten Beyer with art by Tony Shasteen the first story arc is Klingon-centric diving into the background of T’Kuvma.

On it’s own, the comic is an interesting start to a story focused on the Klingons diving a bit into their society, traditions, and even their religion a bit. I’m a casual Star Trek fan, so for me this is all new material and I find it pretty interesting. It also adds a lot to Star Trek: Discovery exploring the background of things and characters that have been touched upon but not gone in depth, it adds a decent amount.

With the first arc being Klingon focused it also has no mention of the Federation or the Discovery crew. So, the comic series is giving us a look at the television series from a different angle. That’s good in that it expands the world but bad as the television show feels more focused on the Discovery itself, so folks coming into the issue based on the title alone might be a bit confused.

The story is interesting though adding a lot into motivations and the history.

The art is good. There’s a lot of detail with each Klingon feeling unique and the locations having both a familiar and alien look about them all. It’s solid work that captures the look and aesthetic of Star Trek: Discovery.

The comic adds to what the television series can’t cover which adds to the story overall. It provides background which has the show make a bit more sense in some ways. It’s a good example of using other mediums to add to a story while not making it vital to a point you are chained to it.
