Angel Has Fallen Into First for the Weekend

Outperforming expectations, Angel Has Fallen took first place for the weekend box office bringing in an estimated $21.3 million. The previous installment, London Has Fallen, earned $21.6 million. It’s the smallest debut for the franchise but the first to open in first place.

Like its predecessors, the film earned an “A-” CinemaScore from the opening day audience and audiences have given it a 94% on RottenTomatoes as of this article. The opening weekend audience was 51% male and 58% were aged 30 or older.

In second place was Good Boys which earned an estimated $11.8 million, a 45% drop, not bad for a second-weekend drop. The domestic total now is at $42.1 million. The film is playing in 22 foreign markets where it brought in $3.5 million to bring that total to $6.9 million and a worldwide total of just shy of $49 million.

In third place was the new film Overcomer which earned $8.2 million off of a $5 million budget. The movie beat expectations and continues the success of faith-based films, the third-largest opening for the genre. Audiences gave it an “A+” CinemaScore and it has a 99% audience score on RottenTomatoes.

The Lion King took fourth place dropping 35% in its sixth week. The film earned an estimated $8.2 million. Its earned $510.6 million domestically so far. It also earned $30 million from 56 foreign markets to bring that total to $997.9 million for a worldwide total of $1.509 billion. That’s the ninth highest worldwide grossing ever and the film will likely move to seventh after this week.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw rounded out the top five bringing in $8.1 million to bring its domestic total to $147.7 million. The film debuted in China where it earned an estimated $102 million, the largest opening in August ever there and the second-largest opening in the country for the franchise. The international total was over $120 million for the weekend to bring its foreign total to $441.2 million and $588.9 million worldwide.

Opening in sixth was Ready or Not which earned an estimated $7.6 million for a five day total of $10.6 million. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore and an audience that was 53% female, expected for a horror film, and 79% of the crowd was under the age of 35.

In comic film news…

Spider-Man: Far From Home came in at #15 for the weekend earning an estimated $1.7 million domestically to bring its total to $379.7 million.

Avengers: Endgame is still earning money coming in at #33 and adding $50,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $858.2 million.

Sony Comments on their Break-Up with Marvel

Spider-Man: Far From Home

News broke yesterday that the partnership between Sony and Marvel concerning the Spider-Man films is shifting.

The two studios couldn’t agree on a new financial relationship concerning films and a possible expansion of their partnership involving other characters in Sony’s Spider-Man portfolio. Disney wanted more of the pie and refused counteroffers by Sony.

In the current arrangement, Marvel would produce Sony’s Spider-Man films and the character would, in turn, be able to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony puts the blame squarely on Disney over the impasse.

Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live-action Spider-Man film.

We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him — including all their newly added Marvel properties — do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.

If reporting is correct, Disney asked Sony to take less money than they have made in their solo Spider-Man ventures. With the success of Venom and an Oscar win for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it’s unclear how Disney thought they had the upper negotiating power.

This is also the first time since the Fox purchase Disney has been pushed back upon as far as their machinations. The 800 lb gorilla isn’t so unstoppable. The statement by Sony would also point the finger at Disney for the initial leak of the news. The scenario being that the outcry by the internet would force Sony to come back to the table. Sony appears to have called their bluff.

In likelihood, the two parties will continue negotiations and come to a deal as their two joint ventures have averaged more than Sony’s Spider-Man films and Marvel’s solo films when it comes to worldwide grosses.

Sony and Marvel are on a Break Over Spider-Man

Disney and Sony are taking a break when it comes to the Spider-Man property after the two studios couldn’t come to a new agreement. The dispute has taken place over the past few months and has resulted with Marvel Studios‘ president Kevin Feige no longer producing the Sony franchise and no more future involvement from Marvel.

Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement and there were discussions of extending that to other Spider-Man related films. Sony rejected that but offered other options. Disney currently receives “in the range of 5% of first-dollar gross” under the current deal.

But financially, it makes little sense for Sony to take Marvel’s deal. 100% of the average $742.1 million is better than 50% of the $991.5 million average of the two joint ventures.

Venom

Sony has also found recent greater success with the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Venom grossing $856.1 million. A sequel to that film is in the works and the Spider-Verse team is being tapped for more projects with Sony and are easy replacements for Feige along with producer Amy Pascal.

But, on average, Sony has just had more success on their own compared to Marvel on their own. When you take out the three Avengers team films, the average Sony live-action Spider-Man film grosses more than Marvel films. Worldwide, Sony sees $803.2 million per film compared to Marvel’s $758.6 million (and that includes Marvel’s four billion dollar solo films). Domestically, the two are similar with Marvel grossing $309.3 million compared to Sony’s $298.7 million. Internationally, Sony wins with $504.5 million to Marvel’s $449.3 million. While Sony’s average budget is higher, they still have a higher “profit” of $606.2 million compared to Marvel’s $586.3 million. The multiplier for Sony is 4.65x on average to Marvel’s 4.17x. So, Sony has had success with their films before Marvel ever became involved (just because you didn’t like the film doesn’t mean it wasn’t a success).

Interestingly, the two are stronger together as their joint ventures beat both studios separately. On average the two joint Spider-Man films have earned $355.4 million domestically, $636.1 million internationally, $991.5 million worldwide, $824 million “profit,” and a5.96 multiplier. Sony’s original Spider-Man trilogy has still performed better than this third volume which has really seen its success at the international box office.

The two studios’ latest joint project, Spider-Man: Far From Home became Sony’s highest-grossing film of all time passing the James Bond film Skyfall.

It is expected director Jon Watts and actor Tom Holland will continue their involvement with the franchise for at least the next two films.

Sony has numerous Spider-Man related films in the works including a sequel to Venom with Andy Serkis directing and Tom Hardy returning to star. Morbius with Jared Leto is coming and films based on Kraven the Hunter, Silver Sable, and Black Cat are all rumored. Then there are the spinoffs to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. All of which will prevent a reversion of rights to Disney.

In reality, Sony has all the cards and Disney is the one that’ll have to pay up for once.

The Kitchen Continues to Circle the Drain as 2018 Wraps Up

Comic film adaptations are big dollars and we track how they do each week to see trends and what’s working and what’s not. With 2018’s films wrapped up, we turn our focus squarely on 2019. We’ll have a deep dive into 2018 later today. But, on to 2019!

The Kitchen, based on the Vertigo comic miniseries, continues to struggle at the box office. Coming in at #13 this past weekend, the film dropped 60.1% in its second weekend earning an estimated $2.2 million to bring its domestic total to $10.4 million. It barely doubled its domestic total over the week. The movie has also earned around $252,000 at the international box office. With a $38 million budget, the movie will have to fight to earn its production value back. It’s currently the worst performing comic film of 2019 in all measurements.

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home came in at #12 earning an estimated $2.8 million to bring its domestic total to $376.6 million. The film also earned $203,000 internationally over the week where its total stands at $726.2 million. Worldwide it has earned $1.103 billion. While the film is the highest-grossing Spider-Man film worldwide, it’s still only second domestically. The original 2002 Spider-Man holds the top title with $403.7 million.

Avengers: Endgame is still bringing in money after 17 weeks. Coming in at #25 it added $98,000 to its domestic total. The film stands at $858.1 million domestically. Over the week, the film earned $480,000 internationally. It has earned $1.938 internationally for a worldwide total of $2.796 billion.

Dark Phoenix wasn’t on the weekend chart but brought in $19,000 over the week domestically. The film has earned $65.8 million domestically and $185.6 million internationally for a worldwide total of $252.4 million.

Good Boys Unseats Hobbs & Shaw and Takes First at the Weekend Box Office

A Universal film replaced another Universal film for first place as Good Boys took the top spot with an estimated $21 million. The studio has now taken first three weekends in a row.

Good Boys looks to be a solid entry at the movies as it has an 89% audience score with RottenTomatoes and a “B+” CinemaScore from opening day audiences. The crowd was 52% male and 59% of the audience was aged 25 or older.

Internationally, the film opened in 13 markets and earned an estimated $2.1 million for $23.1 million worldwide. The film was predicted to have a $20.5 million domestic opening and with a $20 million budget, the film seems to be doing well.

It’s also only the third original film to top the weekend box office. It also helped push Universal over the $1 billion mark for the domestic box office, the second studio to do so in 2019.

In second place was Hobbs & Shaw which earned an estimated $14.1 million to bring its domestic total to $133.7 million. Internationally, the film added $45.7 million to its total. Overseas it’s earned $303.3 million for a worldwide total of $437 million. The film is right in the middle of the pack when it comes to the Fast and Furious franchise for worldwide earnings.

In third place was The Lion King which added to Disney’s box office dominance. The film added $11.9 million to its domestic total and that now stands at $496.1 million. It also added $33.8 million overseas and that total stands at $939.1 million for a $1.435 billion total. It now ranks at #9 for worldwide grosses passing Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 debuted on Tuesday and struggled for the week. Angry Birds 2 mustered an estimated $10.5 million for a $16.2 million six-day total. The original film earned $38 million in its first three days. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore for an audience that as 51% female and crowd that was 53% aged 25 or older.

Rounding out the top five was Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The film earned an estimated $10 million in its second weekend. The domestic total now stands at $40.2 million after two weeks. Internationally it added $5.6 million for a total of $14.1 million and a worldwide total of $54.3 million off of a $25 million budget.

When it comes to films based on comics…

This past week no film released in 2018 added to their total. That’s two weeks in a row so we’re counting 2018’s releases as done. We’ll have a dive into how 2018 compared to previous years and the general takeaway for comic films.

But, so far…

2018 is a record-setting year for comic film adaptations. It has topped 2017’s then record year and then some. Currently, comic adaptations have earned $2.697 billion domestically, $4.563 billion internationally, $7.260 billion worldwide, with a “profit” of $6.048 billion. That’s off of 10 films. 2017, with 16 films, saw domestic earnings of $2.365 billion, international earnings of $3.755 billion, worldwide earnings of $6.120 billion, and “profits” of $4.442 billion.

Here’s where 2018’s comic films stand as far as the actual numbers.

The Kitchen debuted at #7 with an estimated $5.5 million. That’s well below expectations which had it earning between $6 and $11 million. The film earned a “B-” CinemaScore from an audience that was 51% female and 89% were over the age of 25. The film is based on the Vertigo comic miniseries.

Reviews weren’t kind for the film which has just 21% approval from critics and 69% from the audience on RottenTomatoes.

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home was #8 for the weekend with an estimated $5.3 million to bring its domestic total to $371 million after 6 weeks. It also earned $11 million at the international box office to bring that total to $726 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $1.097 billion passing The Dark Knight Rises in all-time grosses for a film based on a comic.

Avengers: Endgame is still bringing in money after 16 weeks. It earned $197,000 over the weekend to increase its domestic total to $857.9 million. Over the week, the film earned about $75,000 internationally to bring that total to $1.937 billion and $2.795 billion worldwide.

Dark Phoenix brought in $31,000 over the weekend and about $60,000 over the week domestically. Internationally, the film added $20,000 to its total over the week. The film has earned $65.8 million domestically and $185.6 million internationally for a worldwide total of $252.4 million.

Hobbs & Shaw Repeats in First By a Car Length at the Weekend Box Office

It wasn’t a close race at the weekend box office as Hobbs & Shaw repeated in first place holding on to the spot for a second weekend. The film dipped 51% to earn an estimated $25.4 million. That brings its domestic total to $108.5 million.

Internationally, the film earned $60.8 million to bring its foreign earnings to $224.1 million. The film has earned $332.6 million worldwide after two weeks. The film opens in South Korea on August 14 and China on August 23. Expect a massive boost in foreign earnings then.

In second place was Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark which debuted with an estimated $20.8 million. The film received a “C” CinemaScore from the opening audience with a crowd that was 57% female and 54% aged 25 or older.

The Lion King remake came in third place with an estimated $20 million. After four weeks, the film has earned $473.1 million. Internationally, the film added $9.3 million to its total. That total now stands at $861.5 million for a worldwide total of $1.334 billion. The film is the second-highest-grossing film of the year.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold debuted in fourth place with an estimated $17 million. The film earned an “A” CinemaScore from the opening day audience which was 57% female and 54% aged 25 or older. Internationally, the film debuted in 11 markets and earned $2.5 million.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood rounded out the top five with an estimated $11.6 million to bring its domestic total to $100.3 million after 3 weeks.

In comic related films….

And on to 2019!

This past weekend, Spider-Man: Far From Home added $7.8 million to its domestic total which now stands at $360.3 million. Internationally, the film added $9.5 million to that total to bring it to $715 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $1.075 billion.

Avengers: Endgame came in at #14 for the weekend and earned an estimated $313,000 to bring its domestic total to $857.4 million. Internationally, the film earned $500,000 over the past week to bring that total to $1.937 billion. Worldwide, the film has earned $2.795 billion.

Dark Phoenix improved to #19 from the previous week’s #26 and earned an estimated $109,000 to bring that total to $65.8 million. The weekend’s total is an improvement by $5,000 from the previous week. The film added about $200,000 over the week internationally. That total is now $186.6 million for a worldwide total of $252.3 million.
