Apes Top Robots at the Box Office

dawn of the planet of the apesIt’s not much of a surprise, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes topped the weekend box office earning an estimated $73 million. That debut is about a 33% improvement from 2011’s Planet of the Apes which debuted with $54.8 million.

The film’s audience was 58% male and 55% over the age of 25. Diversity was also present with the crowd roughly 48% Caucasian, 23% African-American, 16% Hispanic, and 14% Asian. The film received an A- CinemaScore and is currently at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When it comes to other comic related movies, Transformers: Age of Extinction dropped to second, earning $16.5 million. Domestically the film has earned $209 million and internationally $543.5 million.

The Edge of Tomorrow earned an additional $1.865 million the past weekend to bring it’s domestic gross to $94.55 million in it’s sixth week at the box office. Internationally the film has earned $256 million.

X-Men: Days of Future Past was in 16th place adding a little over $1 million to bring the domestic total to $229.2 million. Internationally the film has earned $731.4 million.

Snowpiercer added $677,000 to it’s total and brings the domestic amount to $2.7 million. Internationally the film has earned $80.2 million. Interestingly in this third week of release the film was released on video on demand, so the amount earned that way isn’t reflected in the total.

At the end of the month Guardians of the Galaxy opens, which is likely to vault into one of the top earning spots of the year.

Transformers 4 Remains On Top of the Box Office

Transformers-Age-of-Extinction-Poster-Optimus-and-GrimlockAccording to reports, the Fourth of July weekend was weak at the box office. Without any blockbuster competition,Transformers: Age of Extinction remained at the top of the box office with an estimated $36.4 million. That has the film dropping 64% from the previous weekend and in two weeks it has racked up a domestic total of $714.7 million. Overseas the film has topped $400 million already.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Rocket_Raccoon_1_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in. Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out.

TOP PICK: Rocket Raccoon #1 (Marvel) – You don’t need to be a diehard Guardians fan to know a gun toting raccoon would be a fan favorite character. This run looks amazing and hilarious.

Black Widow #8 (Marvel) – Nathan Edmondson and Phil Noto’s exceptional series continues with the timely character introduction of the Winter Soldier. When are these two not good together?

Caliban #4 (Avatar Press) – A creepy sci-fi series that’s solid horror entertainment. The setting and situations are so solid, and where this series goes, I have no idea.

Lazarus #9 (Image Comics) – The series is a fantastic look at a dystopian future where families rule the people like lords and serfs.

Moon Knight #5 (Marvel) – Each issue is good enough to stand by itself. Spector’s multiple personalities makes being a superhero detective devilishly entertaining.

Nailbiter #3 (Image Comics) – Why does one town create so many serial killers? A solid detective thriller.

RoboCop #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Writer Joshua Williamson picks up in the time and place where the cult movie left off. Fighting crime and corruption hasn’t looked this good since Judge Dredd.

Snowpiercer (Titan Books) – The acclaimed graphic novel turned movie has all of humanity on a train that can’t stop, divided by class.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Echoes #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – The hit video game comes to comics, which should translate all the action nicely.

The Woods #3 (BOOM! Studios) – BOOM! has been on a role lately, and this series takes a high school and transplants it to an alien world. We discover what’s going on as they do, in this entertaining read.

Facebook Fandom Spotlight: Snowpiercer and Transformers: Age of Extinction Part 2

Today is the release of part two of my study, using Facebook likes, to see what the impact pre and post opening of a movie is.This past weekend saw the opening of two films of interest to comic fans. Snowpiercer is based on the graphic novel of the same name, and was in limited release, while Transformers dominated the box office with Transformers: Age of Extinction.

The study looks at the various terms in Facebook in the United States. Compared to last week Snowpiercer saw growth mostly in the United States, and particularly among women who increased four points.

Transformers: Age of Extinction opened number one at the box office and according to reports with 64% of the audience as men. The term for the movie is 61.29% male, the same as last week, and Transformers is around 58%. Pretty close to what came out opening weekend, and keeping up the record of the two statistics being pretty close for what we’ve looked at. The biggest change for the stats in general is a gain of about 1 million people for Age of Extinction, most of which were outside the United States.

Below is the statistics from the previous week, and this week’s statistics as well.
