SLG Publishing Announces San Jose Comics Festival
Free Outdoor Comic Convention To Be Paired With Annual Charity Zombie Crawl.

SAN JOSE, CA – 4/26/2012 – SLG Publishing, the San Jose, CA comics & graphic novel publisher best known for it’s quirky and offbeat offerings, will be sponsoring it’s first outdoor comic book convention when it puts on the San Jose Comics Festivalon September 1.

The San Jose Comics Festival was up this point and twice yearly event that SLG Publishing sponsored and held in it’s warehouse/gallery space. Those events played host to local comic artists and were casual, informal events that placed a premium on giving readers and creators a chance to connect in a more substantive way than they could at most comic book conventions. In expanding upon the event SLG president Dan Vado took inspiration from the very successful Los Angeles Times Festival of Books and decided to move the convention outdoors, closing off a street adjacent to a small park in downtown San Jose. SLG and the San Jose Downtown Association haves used the same location for a yearly charity zombie crawl and movie night called Zombie-O-Rama (www.zombieorama.com).

The San Jose Comics Festival will be combined with Zombie-O-Rama to form a two day event that will have some crossover appeal to vendors and fans. The zombie event, which is a food drive for a local food bank, will be held the evening of Friday August 31st. The San Jose Comics Festival will be held the next day in the same space as the Zombie-O-Rama. Established in 2009, last year’s Zombie-O-Rama drew an estimated 3,000 people to downtown on a Wednesday night.

Along with artists and other comic related vendors, The San Jose Comics Festival will also feature a stage of live music featuring both San Jose based bands and a few from outside of the area. The event will be free to attend and will be supported by the sale of vending spaces as well as by local sponsorships.

“Many literary events have outdoor settings” noted SLG President Dan Vado “When I decided I wanted to expand the San Jose Comics Festival the last thing I wanted to do was to put on another comics convention in some convention center somewhere. The success we had with Zombie-O-Rama out in the street and in the park gave me the idea that we should do the comic book show outdoors and leverage our zombie event’s success to attract people and to save money on street closures and all of the other permitting that goes into an outdoor event of this nature.”

Vado also noted that the great year-around weather that San Jose enjoys lends itself to outdoor events “It’s my hope that The San Jose Comics festival can become a yearly tradition alongside the Jazz Festival and the many other street fairs and events that take place downtown.”

The San Jose Comics Festival is not SLG Publishing’s first comic book convention having founded the Alternative Press Expo in 1994 (which is currently run by Comic-Con International) and produced two Los Angeles area conventions called IPEX (Independent Publishing Experience) in 1999 as well as a series of collectible convention in Northern California called Americon. The charity Zombie-O-Rama event was started in 2009 and attracts thousands of people to downtown San Jose.

San Jose, CA – February 14th 2012 – The old saying that love never dies has that been more true than in the new digital comic book mini-series Heart of a Corpse from artist Justin Sane and SLG Publishing. Mixing Victorian styled silhouettes with a silent film storytelling style, Heart of a Corpse is a two part story that follows the love a man has for a morticians daughter to the grave and beyond.

“Heart of a Corpse is the result of my being a bit obsessed with silent films – particularly horror and fantasy of the era.” explains creator Justin Sane “There’s a romanticism at work in those films, macabre as some may be, that modern cinema just doesn’t seem to match for me. I thought something done in that style would be very interesting to see in a comic book.”

Heart of a Corpse’s silent film style made doing the series as a digital comic a natural for an initial release “I reviewed the proposal for this book on the web and as I read it felt like the best place for this comic was in a digital space” said publisher Dan Vado “had we printed this it would have been in black and white and a lot of the beauty of the series would have been lost. The silent film style of the storytelling really lent itself to this being released digitally.”

New SLG Graphic Novel Sparko Goes to Dark New Places

San Jose, CA – November 16th 2011 – In Sparko, a new graphic novel by Karl Stephan to be released in January, a burnt-out rock star finds himself in the Walled Kingdom, a world below London’s streets where memories and ideas take corporeal form and darkness takes on a whole new meaning.

“Sparko” in Cockney slang means unconscious, and as far as Norman is concerned, that is how he can spend the rest of his life. The former rock star has descended into London’s underground (at least what he thinks is the underground), fueled only by despair and drugs. But when he crosses the wrong person, gets pitched off a bridge into the Thames, and wakes up with a pickpocket named Belle rummaging through his pockets, little does Norman know that he’s about to find out what the real underbelly of London is like.

“The wall was built under London centuries ago by the church, originally to keep certain pagan ideas inside,” explains Stephan, “but over time other ideas that have slipped from the popular consciousness started ending up there too, even people. It resulted in distorted version of the city upstairs, bubbling over with suppressed memes and stuff.”

Ultimately, Norman must decide which world he belongs in — is his life above ground worth saving, or is he another figment of London’s collective memory? With gray-shaded, black-and-white artwork that makes easy transitions from zany to ethereal, Stephan takes readers from the gutter, to a scooter chase on London streets, to the underground with its scheming denizens, and, finally, to Norman’s murky, troubled past.

Influenced by British television shows like The Black Adder and The Young Ones and underground comics like Tank Girl, the South African Stephan calls his work satire. “I find it hard to make any kind of serious statement without subsequently making fun of it,” he says.

Sparko is 176-page graphic novel, which will be available both in print and digitally in January 2012. Its ISBN is 978-1-59362-220-6 and its cover price is $14.95, Sparko will be on sale at better comics stores as well as at Amazon.com. Comic Book Format For New Series To Be Replaced With Digital Downloads

San Jose, CA – 9/19/2011 – San Jose based comic book publisher SLG Publishing is embracing digital distribution of its titles and switching the company’s model for comic book series to a digital first distribution policy. “The market has been pushing us away from serialized comics and more towards books and graphic novels for some time” said SLG president and publisher Dan Vado “However it is difficult to publish a 200 page graphic novel from an unknown artist without having some sort of lower-cost entry point like a comic book series to help build an audience, so going digital first seems like a good way to introduce readers to new creators and build an audience which we can build on for potential book releases.”

SLG digital releases will be available in a number of formats and places. From it’s own website SLG comics will be available in .PDF, .CBZ and ePub format “Our ePub files have been formatted to look best on an iPad using iBooks” pointed out Vado ” but they should look good on whatever you like to read ebooks on”. In addition to selling from their own website new SLG releases will also be available at the iTunes store for readers with iOS devices who prefer the convenience of purchasing media inside the iBooks application. Nook and Nook Color owners will also be able to purchase books for those devices through BN.COM

This is in addition to SLG’s current digital distribution through app based stores like Comixology and iVerse “People like to consume in ways they are familiar and comfortable with, it’s not my intention to try and force our readers or new readers to have limited choices in terms of digital consumption. SLG has always maintained a strategy and policy of keeping it’s products in as many venues as will have them and that will extend into the digital world.”

Indy Comics Publisher To Also Host Mini-Convention

SAN JOSE, CA – 8/2/2011 – San Jose based comics publisher SLG Publishing once will one again be sponsoring a zombie walk/food drive this August. August 31st SLG brings Zombie-O-Rama back to the streets of downtown San Jose. Now in its third year, Zombie-O-Rama is a zombie crawl/food drive benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bak of Santa Clara. The event revolves around an outdoor showing of a zombie movie (this year’s film is Fido) which is preceded with a good, old-fashioned zombie walk.

Last year’s crawl attracted over 2,000 people and almost a ton of food was collected for the food bank. This years event will also have live music provided by Brass Hysteria and a zombie fashion show before the movie. The event takes place in the park across the street from the SLG warehouse. On August 27th SLG will relaunch its San Jose Comics Festival. Held in the confines of the SLG warehouse in San Jose, The San Jose Comics Festival is a relaxed and low key environment where people can meet and talk shop with comic book artists. The August 27th event has a decidedly SLG slant to it as featured artists include Mike White whose debut graphic novel Amity Blamity has been very well received, and Crab Scrambly who did interior paintings for the Jhonen Vasquez penned Everything can be Beaten. Also in attendance will be Rikki Simons, best known for his work on Shutterbox as well as for being the voice of Gir from Invader Zim.
