Review: Sheltered #1

sheltered01_coverSo, the apocalypse is happening. Or maybe it has already happened. Either way, we’ve seen it. Right? Right. Sheltered is yet another attempt to hop onto the post/pre-apocalypse bandwagon; right off the bat I’ll tell you, Sheltered tries something new, which thankfully makes it stand out from the crowd a little bit.

(SOILERS) Issue #1 quickly sets the scene: a collection of trailers and small houses have been built in the snowy, mountainous wilderness somewhere in North America, probably in the United States (Obama is name checked). This community contains several families preparing for some kind of catastrophic event by building bunkers and gathering water and canned goods. We’re introduced to Victoria (who goes by Vic) and her father, the seeming protagonists, and how they deal with their neighbors. Soon enough, the narrative jumps to two kids, Lucas and Joey, who have been planning a coup, and then successfully murder all of the adults. Probably. Everything is a little unclear.

Therein lies the blessing and curse of the first issue of Sheltered. It sets up an interesting kind of Lord of the Flies in the Snow with Guns kind of environment. That’s fun, and I want to read that book. However, the twist of Lucas and Joey being the ringleaders to lead a revolution against their own parents was essentially given away the first time we see them. Vic says, “those guys are creeps,” and boom. You know something is going down. Furthermore, Lucas, the apparent ringleader, is given absolutely zero characterization, other than having a prominently displayed copy of The Catcher in the Rye in his room. (And could the book choice have gotten any more cliché?) He just seems a sociopath willing to kill his own father. What this means is that issue #2 will again have a lot of world building to do; it was an interesting choice on Ed Brisson’s part to develop a status quo and then immediately change it. And it seemed like all of the kids were in on the plan except for Vic, which makes me wonder, “What kind of personality is Lucas that he could persuade every single kid in town to be willing to kill their parents?”

However, I like where this is going. I want Lord of the Flies in the Snow with Guns and a Cult Leader. I want that very much. I’m excited for the next issue.

The art is also a strange mixture. Johnnie Christmas’ (By the way, what a great name.) art at times perfectly fits the situation, while at others it seems strangely lacking in detail. Characters are gangly with long faces and hands, and it reminds me very much of Jeff Lemire’s style. I have absolutely no problem with that (Underwater Welder, anyone?), however Christmas’ art loses a lot of detail when the panels pull back to mid shots and long shots. Characters lose all facial features and distinctive characteristics; it got to the point where it was sometimes unclear to me who was who when I saw them from a distance. When backgrounds are given detail, it’s frequently beautiful. The setting is without a doubt gorgeous, and the sterile white plays nicely against the angry red bloodshed that comes at the end of the issue. However, usually the backgrounds on long shots lack the level of detail necessary when establishing location.

Another issue I had, which seems like a bigger deal than it actually is, was that ages were impossible to determine. At times Vic looked around 12, whereas at others she looked as old as 24 or 25. Lucas’ father is somewhere between 35 and 60. I say this is less of a problem than it should be because I assume that as the story continues and we learn more about these characters, we’ll learn the ages of the kids via dialogue or thought processes. As I said above, there aren’t many (if any at all) adults left, so . . . that’s not really an issue. But still, I’d like some consistent facial features.

In the end, Lord of the Flies in the Snow with Guns and a Cult Leader with Sometimes Questionable Artistic Choices is one that I have faith will find itself as it continues, and I look forward to reading along.

Picks of the Week: Princeless: Tales of the Family Ashe

Princeless-tales-of-the-family-Ashe-coverI’m a huge fan of all things Princeless. So, of course I’m going to recommend this one-shot Princeless: Tales of the Family Ashe by Action Lab .

While Adrienne is having the adventure of her lifetime, her family is getting pulled into the fray! Learn what happens to the ethereal Angelica in the aftermath of Adrienne’s rescue attempt! Shudder to learn what horrible fate has befallen Adrienne’s next sister, Angoisse! And learn the rest of the tale of the young King Ashe, ensnared in the trap of the fiendish elves.

There’s numerous reasons to recommend this comic and series every chance I get. The first is, with this one-shot, we get more of what’s going on with Adrienne’s family. The second is, this is one of the few series that’s as smartly written for kids as it is for adults. Third, it’s also a series that throws out all of the stereotypes and tropes we see in other comics and stories, giving us a strong female minority lead. This continues to be one of the most important comics currently being produced.

Here’s 9 other comics to check out this week in alphabetical order.

  • A1 #2 – The first issue of Titan Comics’ anthology series was beyond fantastic. I’m expecting more of the same from this one.
  • Ghosted #1 – A horror/crime mashup that’s equal parts Ocean’s 11 and The Shining. Sign me up!
  • Hawkeye #12 – One of the best Marvel comics on the market. It’s not afraid to shake things up in its storytelling techniques.
  • Justice League #22Trinity War, nuff said.
  • Night of the 80s Undead #1 – Another Action Lab comic. This time from their adult Danger Zone imprint. The series skewers the 80s with a mashup of zombies.
  • Quantum and Woody #1 – The popular Valiant duo returns!
  • Shelterd #1 – The men and women of Safe Haven have been preparing for any-and-all end of world scenarios for years. However, their bunkers, weapons and training can’t save them from the one threat they never could have expected: Their own children.
  • The Standard #3 – This should be on everyone’s list. The publisher offered you your money back if you don’t enjoy it.
  • The Westwood Witches #2 – A great horror comic from indie publisher Amigo Comics.

Survival at all costs in Sheltered

The founders of the survivalist colony Safe Haven are sure that the end of civilization is at hand. Economic collapse, natural disaster, civil war — they’re prepared for it all in their underground compound deep in the woods of America’s northeast. But, in Sheltered, the new series from Image Comics by Ed Brisson and Johnnie Christmas, the threat to their existence comes from a source they never expected: their own children.

Coming in July, Sheltered follows the consequences after Safe Haven’s younger generation, raised in paranoia and isolation, rebel against their parents and take over the compound. Two leaders emerge from the rebellion: the teenagers Lucas, who led the revolt,  and Victoria, who leads another group of kids in their escape. With Victoria set to expose Safe Haven, Lucas and his faction are determined to hunt her and her group down before they reach the nearest town, forty miles away through dangerous wilderness.

The idea for Sheltered grew out of Brisson’s interest in end-of-world scenarios. “Initially, I was researching preppers — people who are actively preparing for natural disasters, nuclear war, societal breakdown — to get and idea of how people would be able to survive any of the above,” said the writer. “My initial idea was to do a post-apocalyptic story. Through my research, I started to get obsessed with the culture — from the outside! I don’t own a bunker! — and how it would affect children raised in that sort of environment.”

With the art, Christmas strives to capture the isolation of the setting and the individuality of each character. “We’re going to be facing down the apocalypse with these people, it’s important to really get a sense of who they are and what they’re capable of,” he said. “These kids aren’t even out of high school, but they are probably the most prepared folks on earth, when it comes to riding out the end of the world.”

Sheltered is a full-color comic book, with a five-issue first arc. Its first issue can be pre-ordered now (Diamond code MAY130408) and will be in stores on July 10, 2013.
