Review: By The Horns: Dark Earth #1

By The Horns: Dark Earth

By The Horns: Dark Earth #1 takes place six months after the hellacious battle in the sky with the evil sorceress, Feng Po. Elodie and Sajen are back in Wayfarer, reluctantly settling into their new lives as… farmers?! But their days spent tilling the land in overalls proves short-lived when a mysterious blight devastates the continent of Solothus and forces them to take up a new quest.

It’s always an exciting day when I get a copy of a book by Markisan Naso and Jason Muhr (writer and artist/letter respectively) in my inbox. The new chapter to the second arc of By The Horns is every bit as awesome as the previous arc; my average score per issue for that series would have been at least a 9.5, but I’m not sure exactly what because I haven’t gone back to check – suffice it to say that the trade, which is out now, is one of the best reads you’ll have this summer.

There’s going to be very minor spoilers for this issue after this paragraph, so the condensed version of the review is (once again): go buy this book, add the rest to your pull list, and then buy the first volume.

Picking up the story six months after the conclusion on the previous arc, The Wind Rises, we find that monster hunter and all around bad ass Elodie has hung up her sword and picked up the instruments of a farmer as she tries to adjust to life without an enemy to fight.

Of course, things rarely go to plan, and it isn’t long before Elodie drops the plow and has to take up the sword again; now while this is technically a minor spoiler, realistically you can’t expect anything less given that there’s a new arc beginning for the series. What I enjoyed more about the transition from farmer to warrior again was in how Naso pulls it off. There’s no real sudden switch, no immediate threat that shows up, but a slow build to the realization that she needs to fight for Solothus once again. I enjoyed the way Naso opens the story, and while it’s certainly a slower opening than the second and third arcs of his previous series Voracious, I think it actually works a lot more effectively in hooking you into the story.

It should come as no surprise to those who have followed his work, but Jason Muhr’s art has been trending upward in terms of quality; he’s consistently on, and I genuinely don’t remember a time where I haven’t been able to read the story purely from his visuals. Long time collaborator Andrei Tabacaru isn’t providing the colours this time, instead colourist Steve Cannon is fleshing out the pages of By The Horns: Dark Earth; in terms of quality and consistency, you’ll have a hard time noticing based on this issue, but I’m curious what Cannon will bring to the following issues.

Markisan Naso and Jason Muhr are probably my favorite writer/artist combination in comics, and at this point they’ve earned my trust when it comes to whatever new series they’re putting out, and this comic just reinforces that trust. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you’re not reading By The Horns. The next issue of By The Horns: Dark Earth will come out in July – and while I’ve already got it on my desktop, I still can’t wait to get my hands on the physical copy.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Poison Ivy #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Aquaman: Andromeda #1 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – A DC Black Label Aquaman series is described as cosmic horror around a mysterious structure… that’s waking up!

Astronaut Down #1 (AfterShock) – It’s a trip into alternate realities in an attempt to save Earth from a horrific crisis.

By the Horns: Dark Earth #1 (Scout Comics) – The series is one of our favorites. It’s been six months since the events of the previous volume when a new quest begins due to a mysterious blight.

Code 45 #1 (Scout Comics) – There are dragons lurking in the tunnels beneath Montreal’s city streets – at least that’s the rumor.

Dark Crisis #1 (DC Comics) – DC’s next big event kicks off officially. DC’s classic heroes are gone, will a new generation be able to step up to handle the remaining villains while also standing up against the oncoming darkness?

Dark Knights of Steel #7 (DC Comics) – The series has been a hell of a lot of fun so far with a nice Elseworlds feel to it. Will three kingdoms go to war? Will someone be able to stop it?

Dogs of London #2 (AfterShock) – Ex-gangsters are haunted by someone they thought was dead but might be back!?

Fortnite x Marvel: Zero War #1 (Marvel) – The two properties come together again! The first volume was a hot commodity and we’re expecting the same with this.

Metal Society #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was an interesting new series where humanity was extinct, brought back by robot overlords, and are now fighting in an MMA fight to win their freedom. So much to chew on but just a solid series.

Multiversity: Teen Justice #1 (DC Comics) – Head to Earth-11 for this group of heroes! Everything we’ve seen so far makes this one seem like a hell of a lot of fun.

Nubia: Queen of the Amazons #1 (DC Comics) – Nubia is off to tour of the Amazons that don’t call Themyscira home as a villain from her past steps out of the shadows.

Past the Last Mountain #4 (CEX Publishing) – The series has been fantastic as it reaches it conclusion. Will the creatures reach Dragon Lake and if they do, will it live up to their expectations?

Poison Ivy #1 (DC Comics) – Ivy sets out to complete her greatest work-a gift to the world that will heal the damage dealt to it…by ending humanity.

Potions Inc. #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – Ran finally gets the quest he’s been after his whole life. He and his siblings set off to find a missing artifact.

Quests Aside #2 (Vault Comics) – A fantastic first issue that takes the “save the bar” concept in a whole new direction.

Savage Avengers #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a lot of fun bringing together a rather random group of heroes. The second issue looks to drop them in an unexpected location mixing things up from the previous volume.

Skybound Presents Afterschool #1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – A new anthology series that riffs on the classic “Afterschool specials” with a rotating team of creators.

Twig #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue of this series had a very Jim Henson vibe. The biggest issue was it was too short and might have been better as a graphic novel. Still, we’re excited to see where this adventure goes.

Ward #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – A medical drama with fairies, trolls, and some real humans too. Welcome to St. Lilith, a secret hospital for supernatural creatures.

Where Starships Go to Die #1 (AfterShock) – In a near future ravaged by climate change, an African astronaut teams with an Indian shipping magnate to mount a dangerous salvage mission to recover the wreck of humanity’s first interstellar starship.

Review: The Recount: Preamble #1

Set years before the shocking events of The Recount, Preamble details the life of Phil Pontus, the tragic death of his mother, his military service and subsequent decision to enter politics, his assent to the office of Vice President, and the terrible events that culminated in his assumption of leadership of a terrorist group known only as “The Masses.”

While wandering the city in search of a solution, Skip stumbles upon a ringer, Rube Shaw, a lost country bumpkin who wants to try out for one of the Bridegrooms rivals. Skip tricks Rube into auditioning for the Bridegrooms, instead, but before Skip can whisk Rube away, they run into trouble with the law – Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, who has other plans for them.

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

After Lambana: Myth and Magic in Manila (Tuttle Publishing) – It’s a graphic novel focused on Filipino myth, magic, and supernatural suspense!

Bikini Atoll (Clover Press) – A danger in the water story just in time for summer!

The Closet #1 (Image Comics) – Writer James Tynion IV has been killing it lately so just his name on this tale of existential horror has us intrigued.

Justice League: Road to Dark Crisis (DC Comics) – The opening chapter of DC’s next big events was so-so, but we’re still intrigued by this one-shot comic that fives us a world where the Justice League is gone.

Neverender #1 (Behemoth Comics) – At the edge of civilization the dominant sport is a civilized sword duel to the death.

Newthink #1 (AWA Studios) – This anthology examines the rapid proliferation of technology, the cultural and political polarization of the country, and the technocrats that have driven us to such extremes of thought that we need to present the present as something…futuristic.

The Nice House on the Lake #9 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – We’ve been loving this series that has us guessing as to what exactly is going on and where it’s going.

Phalanx (Image Comics) – Image is celebrating 30 years and this one-shot that seems to be having fun with the Image of old feels like it’d be nostalgic fun.

Shadow War: Omega (DC Comics) – The finale to the mini-event that will lead directly into DC’s next big summer event.

Triskele #1 (Scout Comics) – When young Alec Ellis is granted a magical gift on Samhain night, the scales of power on the island of Albion are inadvertently shifted.

Mullet Cop Gets Animated!

Mullet Cop

Scout Comics & Entertainment LLC has partnered with screenwriter James Butler to develop Tom Lintern‘s post-apocalyptic sci-fi comedy Mullet Cop as an animated series. Kevin Biggins is attached as showrunner and Adriel Garcia will direct.

After a near-death experience, a mall cop goes undercover as a manager at an all-you-can-eat buffet. With the help of his coworkers and a supercomputer/microwave called M.I.T.T. (Mall Industries Two Thousand), he takes on crime boss Robogrannie and her gang of thugs.

James Butler has sold projects to MTV and Comedy Central, and is currently a writer on Hulu’s Animaniacs/Pinky & the Brain reboot. Along with Mullet Cop, James and his frequent collaborator, Jon Scott, are also currently developing an action feature with SR-48 productions.

Kevin Biggins is a stand-up, former Co-Executive Producer on Family Guy, and is currently an Executive Producer on Conquest at Netflix.  Adriel Garcia has worked on Superjail, Unikitty, and most recently Animaniacs

Tom Lintern is an illustrator and storyboard artist with clients in the publishing, video game, and advertising industry. His clients have ranged from Penguin Books and Simon & Schuster to ESPN and McDonald’s. Lintern wrote and illustrated his first comic book series Girrion in 2015 and Mullet Cop in 2021, both published by Scout Comics.

Scout Comics and State Street Pictures Developing Film Based On Assassin & Son

State Street Pictures has optioned the comic book Assassin & Son, created and written by Shad Gaspard and Marc Copani with art by Eder Messiah. Scout Comics & Entertainment, who published the comic, is attached to produce along with State Street.

Donovan Braddock is a one-man killing unit who works with a team of covert assassins known as “The Horsemen.” When Braddock finds love, and makes a family of his own, he attempts to leave that life of violence behind. But he discovers that his old life still torments him when his wife is murdered in front of him and his young son. Now, with nothing to live for, this tragic event sends father and son on an epic journey of revenge and consequence.

Gaspard and Copani are former professional WWE wrestlers who teamed up to write Assassin & Son after retiring from wrestling. Tragically, Shad Gaspard passed away in May 2020 while swimming in Venice Beach with his young son when the two were caught in a riptide, shortly before the publication of Assassin & Son #1. Gaspard was recently inducted into the 2022 WWE Hall of Fame posthumously.
