Mark Brooks, Derek Hunter, Scott Kolins, Jerome Opeña, Ryan Ottley, and Ryan Stegman are coming to Baltimore Comic Con

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Baltimore Comic-Con, taking place at the Inner Harbor’s Baltimore Convention Center on September 20-22, 2024. The Baltimore Comic-Con has announced comics guests Mark Brooks, Derek Hunter, Scott Kolins, Jerome Opeña, Ryan Ottley, and Ryan Stegman to the 25th Anniversary event! See the event website for ticketing details, other guest information, and more!

Mark Brooks is a world famous cover artist for Marvel and DC Comics. His covers have earned him an Inkpot Award in 2014, and he is Eisner-nominated (Best Penciler/Inker and Best Limited Series). He has produced designs for a line of Marvel figures manufactured by Sideshow Collectibles. His first professional work was on 10th Muse at Image Comics, and he has since penciled numerous runs and provided covers for titles for both DC and Marvel, among others.

Derek Hunter is a Los Angeles-based animation designer known for his work on Adventure Time, DuckTales, Kid Cosmic, and Storybots. In addition to his animation work, Derek is known for avoiding a healthy social life in favor of spending nights and weekends making comics like Walking Dead: Small Bites and Pretty Violent, both available from Image Comics.

Scott Kolins, the award-winning comic book creator known for his art on The Flash, The Avengers, Justice League, Marvel Team-Up, Rogues Revenge, Blue Beetle, and many more titles, hails from Central Wisconsin. He studied at the Joe Kubert School and was a Romita Raider at Marvel Comics. Scott has written and drawn his own book Adam.3, as well as Solomon Grundy, Citizen Cold, Superman-Batman, JSA, and Legends of the Dark Knight. Scott has also worked for Lucasfilm and for The Flash TV show. In case you haven’t guessed, Scott loves comics. He lives in Arizona but travels the world at various conventions, dreaming up new comics and sketching his days away.

Jerome Opeña has been working in comics since 2005. He got his start with Metal Hurlant for Humanoids Publishing and has since worked on projects such as Fear Agent, Uncanny X-Force, The Avengers, and his creator-owned book, Seven to Eternity, with frequent collaborator Rick Remender.

Ryan Ottley is an American comic book artist who is most known for his work on the Invincible series. He is a contributing creator on the series who designed and co-created a large part of the Invincible universe with writer Robert Kirkman, and is the primary artist for 127 issues of the 144 issue run. It is now an animated TV series on Amazon Prime video for which Ottley works as a consultant.

After Invincible, Ottley went to Marvel and did 20 issues on Amazing Spider-Man with writer Nick Spencer, and then artist on Hulk with writer Donny Cates. Ottley finished that run as both the writer and the artist.

Ryan Stegman is a comic book artist, writer, and podcaster best known for his work on Marvel Comics characters including She-Hulk, X-23, Spider-Man, and Venom.

James Robinson’s ‘Patra with Scott Kolins kicks off the first of many projects at Dark Horse

From the acclaimed creators behind Starman and The Flash comes ‘Patra, a new supernatural series about slasher monsters, mad scientists, and cult movie-inspired horror. James Robinson will write the series with art and covers by Scott Kolins and letters by Jim Campbell. Francesco Francavilla will provide the variant cover for the first issue, with Gabriel Hernandez Walta, Matt Wagner, and Kelley Jones illustrating variant covers for subsequent issues.

‘Patra is the first of several new creator-owned comic series helmed by Robinson, with more set to begin in Fall 2024 and into 2025, all to be published by Dark Horse. Stay tuned for more details to come!

In this new horror series, a young girl named ‘Patra wakes up with no memory of her past. All she knows is that a big knife and a horrific mask appear whenever she’s in danger. Oh, that, and a deranged killer, in the tradition of 1980s slasher films, who is slaughtering families in a small mid-western town, and wants to make Patra his victim too.

‘Patra #1 (of 4) arrives in comic shops on August 21, 2024. It is now available to pre-order at your local comic shop for $4.99.

Exclusive: Get a Look at Armored #2’s variant cover by Jeff Dickson!

Screenwriter Michael Schwartz is making his comic book writing debut with Armored, a spooky, supernatural comic book series about an orphan who stumbles across a mystical suit of armor haunted by the ghost who wore it centuries ago. Created and written by Schwartz, Armored is illustrated by Ismael Hernandez, lettered by Ferran Delgado, and edited by Eisner-winner Chris Stevens. The five-issue comic book series features covers by artists Jae Lee, Nick Pitarra, Chrissie Zullo, Scott Kolins, Matthew Therrien, and Jeff Dickson. The project is being crowdfunded on Kickstarter by Clover Press.

Meet orphaned teen Andy, whose parents mysteriously vanished years before he was adopted at the outset of our story. When Andy starts at a new school out in the countryside, he accidentally discovers a haunted suit of armor and its ghostly keeper, Sir William. When Andy is attacked by the same mysterious creature that killed his adoptive parents’ biological son, Sir William and the suit help Andy defeat the monster — but the monster was conjured by someone, and they’ll stop at nothing to gain control of the armor. 

Sir William must train Andy to use the armor properly — not just to defeat the other creatures being summoned by the mysterious antagonist, but also to defeat an even more dangerous other-worldly being prophesied to return to Earth and take the suit of armor for its own kind. As he faces off against more and more horrifying monsters, Andy will need to learn to look within himself to find the strength to overcome his own demons in order to save the Earth. But this mystery may be bigger than just Andy and his suit…

DC announces more Dawn of DC including Wonder Woman, The Flash, Steelworks, and Hawkgirl

The Dawn of DC has kicked off, DC Comics‘ initiative that launches new series and new teams on ongoing comics. A yearlong initiative, this May will see the free The Dawn of DC Primer which will reveal secrets about what’s going on.

In June, The Flash and Wonder Woman will each reach 800 issues, a pretty big occasion. Each will see oversized issues and each will see new creative teams for both series. Simon Spurrier and Mike Deodato, Jr. will taking on The Flash and Tom King and Daniel Sampere will be the creative team on Wonder Woman. Actor Michael Dorn will will write Steelworks with art by Sami Basri. Hawkgirl will launch from writer Jadzia Axelrod and art by Amancay Nahuelpan.

The Dawn of DC Primer launches the next phase on May 16 written by Joshua Williamson and art by Leandro Fernandez. It reveals the secrets, threats, and connected stories for 2023 and beyond. Amanda has operated in the shadows and created an army of allies who agree the heroes of the DC Universe are dangerous and a threat to the world. Now, she’s making an offer to some of the worst of the DC Universe, an offer they can’t refuse.

The Flash‘s 800th issue runs into shops on June 6. Mark Waid, Geoff Johns, Joshua Williams, and Jeremy Adams all contribute stories with art by Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Todd Nauck, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Scott Kolins, and Mike Deodato, Jr.

In September, The Flash #1 launches from Simon Spurrier and Mike Deodato, Jr.

Then, in September, Wonder Woman #1 launches with King and Sampere after its prelude in Wonder Woman #800!

After a mysterious Amazonian is accused of mass murder, the U.S. Congress passes The Amazon Safety Act, barring all Amazons from American soil. To carry out its new law, the government sets up the Amazon Extradition Entity (AXE) task force to remove those who don’t comply by any means necessary. In her search for the truth behind the killing, Wonder Woman now finds herself an outlaw in the world she once swore to protect.

Actor, and the voice of Steel in Superman: The Animated Series, Michael Dorn will be writing Steelworks which features art by Sami Basri.

Interpop announces the Emergents TCG global release in February 2023

InterPop is celebrating the first year of the ever-expanding fan-driven Emergents Universe with a trading card game, moving from Public Beta to global release on February 6, 2023! Among the team behind this new initiative are pro-players, and game designers Corey Burkhart, Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa, Brian David-Marshall, Zvi Mowshowitz, and Drew Nolosco. This team counts two in the Magic: the Gathering Hall of Fame, the 2020-2021 Magic the Gathering World Champion, with multiple pro-tournament wins, and a resume of over 50 games and expansions released. Cards in the game feature art from legendary talent like Scott Kolins, Colleen Doran, Adrián Gutiérrez, and more.

The Emergents Trading Card Game taps into this already expansive universe and its rich storylines to create an unmatched player experience, while leveraging the power of the Tezos blockchain to turn cards into digital collectibles, with the ability to own your cards, cosmetics, and other game assets, via the almost any wallet in the Tezos ecosystem. The game combines the deep strategy of traditional TCGs, the convenience and fast pace of digital TCGs, and the digital ownership of Web3.

The Emergents Trading Card has been in Public Beta since August of this year, where players can download the game and start building their decks with regularly-updated batches of Free Set cards. As in the comics, the powers behind characters in The Emergents TCG are divided into 5 factions: Tinkerers, Acolytes, Sculptors, Strongarms, and Non-Stops. Each faction has its own advantages and disadvantages, and players are already finding exciting ways to creatively configure their decks.
