First Impressions Featuring: Venom, Ve’nam and more Venom!

Welcome to Graphic Policy’s First Impressions where we take a look at a handful of comics in order to discern just how accessible they are for new readers, because every comic could be somebody’s first – and that’s the first question that’ll be answered with this feature. The second is whether youshould  start there because sometimes a book could be accessible to new readers but the quality could be less than average, and so each comic will receive a score out of ten based upon Graphic Policy’s typical ten point scale.

Where possible we’ll also be providing  recap of sorts for the relevant story beats up until the issue in question in order to help you figure out if the series is something you’re interested in, assuming we’ve read any part of the story thus far. All comics were provided for review purposes unless otherwise noted.

Venom: First Host #1 (Marvel)
Can a new reader start here?
Yes.
Recap & review: This is just a really good story about the Venom symbiote’s first host. I’m not going to insult you by pretending you don’t know who Venom is, and thusly you don’t need a recap here.
Rating: 8.2

Web of Venom: Ve’nam #1 (Marvel)
Can a new reader start here? Yes.
Recap & review: There’s probably some relevance to the main series given that Donny Cates is writing that and this one shot, but I’m behind in the main series and have probably missed that. Which means that I got to enjoy this as a historically set Venom/Nick Fury/Logan story.
Rating: 8.4

Scarlet #1 (DC)
Can a new reader start here? Yes.
Recap & review: Some shit went down, and now Portland is an isolated lawless (maybe?) city led by Scarlet. I have never heard of or read this story before (this is a sequel), but you can jump in pretty quickly once you accept the premise.
Rating: 8.1

Nightwing Annual #1 (DC)
Can a new reader start here? Uh, maybe?
Recap & review: We all know who Nightwing is, right? Well that’ll help, and you can kinda find your way with this annual, but it isn’t always the easiest to pick up on prior events (though in fairness what’s relevant is explained). Not a bad issue, but not the easiest place to start, either.
Rating: 7.5

Scarlet #1

(W) Brian Michael Bendis (A/CA) Alex Maleev
In Shops: Aug 29, 2018
SRP: $3.99

From the creative team that brought you Daredevil and Infamous Iron Man comes the latest explosive chapter in their creator-owned epic, which IGN called one of the best comics on the stands. SCARLET tells the story of a woman whose life has been ripped apart by police corruption. When she pushes back, she starts a chain reaction of events that will bring about the next American Revolution.

In this brand-new, new reader-friendly chapter, fully painted by Eisner Award-winning artist Alex Maleev, SCARLET tells the story of what happens when one young woman is pushed too far-and what one country will do to stop her.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

The Beatles Yellow Submarine (Titan Comics) – The classic animated film starring the biggest band ever in comic form and as music fans, we’re excited to check it out.

Bone Parish #2 (BOOM! Studios) – A fantastic debut issue has us excited to check out more of this series focused on a new designer drug made up of ground up corpses.

Extermination #2 (Marvel) – Events have been all over in quality in recent years but the first issue of this one surprised us in the quality and how far it was willing to go.

Harbinger Wars 2 #4 (Valiant) – Their recent event wraps up and we want to see how it ends so we have a better idea as to where the Valiant universe is heading next.

Hunt for Wolverine: Dead Ends #1 (Marvel) – This hit and miss series of miniseries had important moments and this issue ties them all together, we hope.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Shattered Grid #1 (BOOM! Studios) – If you’re a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fan, Shattered Grid was a must read comic story and this issue wraps it up.

Rick & Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons #1 (IDW Publishing/Oni Press) – Two properties we can’t believe are coming together.

Scarlet #1 (Jinxworld/DC Comics) – We loved this series when it debuted focused on a rather militant activism. Politically relevant, we can’t wait to see what comes next.

Web of Venom: Ve’Nam #1 (Marvel) – Venom’s history has been fleshed out in recent months and this miniseres is giving us even more. This is how you add to a character’s history.

X-Men: Grand Design – Second Genesis #2 (Marvel) – Ed Piskor has been knocking it out of the park with his reinterpretation of the X-Men’s comic history.

Pick(s) of the Week: Day Men #1 and 9 Other Choices

Daymen_CV_1AFor thousands of years, the world has been controlled by the “50 Families” — a secret network of vampire covens engaged in a timeless struggle for power. But when the sun rises, the vampires are forced to employ the services of a human who acts as their daytime fixer and protector…Trained for centuries to be the mortal soldiers of their vampire employers, the Day Men go forth at sunrise, alone into the world, to do the bidding of their sleeping benefactors.

This week sees the release of BOOM! Studios‘ newest original series Day Men. It also marks the first release from industry legend Brian Stelfreeze as part of the BOOM! family, his first monthly drawing of a comic since 2005. The series is created by Matt Gagnon and co-written by Michael Alan Nelson someone who absolutely knows how to write these types of comics.

Do yourself a favor and check out this new series that has a hell of a lot of buzz.

Below are nine other choices in alphabetical order.

  • Batman ’66 #1 – The DC comic book has a lot of chatter and all of it good in this campy return to the feel of the classic television series.
  • Blood Brothers #1 – Dark Horse’s new series that has two vampires who are also modern day bounty hunters. There’s a great comedic tone in this one.
