Savage Dragon #252 and its “Classic Funnies Comic Strips” Heads Back to Print

Savage Dragon #252, second printing

The wildly popular homage to classic “funnies” comic strips—Savage Dragon #252 by Image partner and CFO Erik Larsen—is being rushed back to print to keep up with growing demand.

In this experimental issue, Larsen taps into the beloved comics nostalgia of classic Funnies strips with double-page spreads in the iconic newspaper comic strip style of storytelling. From a Peanuts parody to a Dick Tracy send-up, from a Doonesbury lampoon to a Blondie satire, this issue is sure to amaze and inspire.

In the announcement, Larsen said:

I’m happy to see how enthusiastically this issue was received by the fans. It was an enormous challenge to write and draw. It took considerably longer to put together than an ordinary issue of Savage Dragon and it’s extremely gratifying to have had it be so well received. I spent weeks combing through newspaper strips and making lists of what might work I drew strips which didn’t make the grade for one reason or another and had a lot of false starts along the way. Ferran Delgado, my letterer, hit it out of the park emulating the lettering of each strip. It was a tremendous effort but true labor of love for everybody involved.

Savage Dragon #252, second printing (Diamond Code AUG209090) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 28.

Savage Dragon Casts his Vote for Biden/Harris in this Variant Cover

Image Comics partner and CFO Erik Larsen is voting Biden/Harris this election season with an alternate cover of Savage Dragon #253 revealed today.

In the announcement, Larsen said:

This is an important election. They always say that but with America literally on fire and an ineptly handled pandemic it feels especially so. Twelve years ago SAVAGE DRAGON endorsed BARACK OBAMA and history was made. Savage Dragon #137 was the first comic book to feature the then-candidate Obama on its cover and it became a global sensation. It’s time to take a stance once more and help make the country, and the world, a better place!

Larsen has previously done covers featuring cameos of politicians, his cover endorsing Barack Obama sold out and went back to press four times.

Savage Dragon has had a long tradition of president and candidate covers dating back to George W. Bush, and covers featuring past presidents have become highly collectible items.

Savage Dragon #253 (Diamond Code AUG208695) will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 21.

Erik Larsen Shares His DC/Image Crossover Art

Word of a possible crossover between DC Comics and Image Comics broke earlier this year. While the project looks dead, Erik Larsen shared art he was doing for his part of the event.

Larsen shared the pencils to an image featuring a Fawcett inspired Captain Marvel and his own Savage Dragon. The two styles in characters stand out making this a company crossover comic fans are worse off for not seeing.

Larsen in a comment says the juxtaposition inn style and characters is on purpose as he’d “prefer contrasting characters to similar ones.”

While the event was sure to sell issues, probably dominate the top ten, and spur too many news articles to count, according to Larsen it was a combination of issues between the two publishers that ended the project.

As Larsen comments in his post:

DC soon found that there weren’t enough willing parties that could get the job done in their timeframe. There were folks at Image who thought it would help DC more than it would Image (since DC would be publishing it) and folks were talked out of participating. The only Image founder onboard was me. Others were creators from the second wave.

The project leaking to a rumor site didn’t help matters sucking the wind out of the room.

Erik Larsen Captain Marvel Savage Dragon

Review: Savage Dragon #226

When a tyrannical madman assumes command of the United States, aliens are deemed a threat to national security and targeted for elimination-and that includes Malcolm Dragon and his family! With a country turned against him, Malcolm Dragon fights as he’s never fought before!

It’s been a really long time since I’ve read an issue of Savage Dragon (like 150+ probably) but with the idea of President Trump being the bad guy and Savage Dragon heading to Canada, the concept had me intrigued enough to check out Savage Dragon #226.

The issue picks up with whatever big event just happened that involved an alien invasion and character’s death but as a “new” reader I didn’t need to know much of that. It just meant about a quarter of the issue was a bit foreign to me and little impact. What I did enjoy was writer Erik Larsen’s take on the current political climate. Xenophobia, racism, hatred, feel like they’re at all time highs with brazen attacks and statements being thrown about, made possible by our current Cheeto-in-Chief, Trump.

Larsen captures that in what feels like it should be parody but in reality is not. He doesn’t hold back using language that will make any decent reader cringe but being done so in a way that these hatemongers are clearly the bad guys and not held up on a pedestal at all.

It’s interesting to see Larsen’s take on the current state of things and in this issue he begins his social commentary on where we are as a nation and society and it’s not pretty. Larsen doesn’t pull punches and lays it out there with clear bad guys when it comes to this and in doing so creates clear sympathy with Malcolm and his friends.

And it’d be a good issue if it just focused on Savage Dragon, but instead things are elevated in just a few panels where Larsen shows the impact on this policy to an “average” alien who is fired because he’s in an “at will state” adding in a reality so many overlook or unaware of. That’s the gut punch of the story.

Will Dragon eventually go to Canada? Will he and his friends become an enemy of the United States? How long will this last? I haven’t been reading in quite some time but in this simple, focused issue, Larsen has me interested in coming to see where he takes this all and how this magical world full of superheroes deals with real world bigotry.
