A Wave Blue World has announced the launch of its latest anthology, Maybe Someday: Stories of Promise, Visions of Hope which is now raising funds on Kickstarter. The graphic novel anthology is a sequel to All We Ever Wanted: Stories of a Better World which received a Ringo Award nomination for “best anthology.”

Maybe Someday is a new full-color anthology presenting over twenty-five aspirational stories to lift the spirits of readers and instill the hope that a brighter future is possible. Maybe Someday also reunites the publisher with the editorial team of Matt Miner and Eric Palicki.

The Maybe Someday Kickstarter campaign, running through the entire month of June, offers a Kickstarter exclusive cover, which is only available to backers. The cover art is by Max Dunbar with colors by Espen Grundetjern. Logo and cover design are by Tim Daniel. A different cover by this same team will be featured on the direct market edition when the book comes out later this year.

Other rewards include a digital sketchbook, signed bookplates, and combo packs of previously published anthologies.

It’s been twenty years since the riders defeated the Destroyer God of Evil and saved the galaxy. Space Riders: Vortex of Darkness #1 jumps twenty years ahead since the last volume and the riders have separated from each other. The issue has no problem dropping you into the action with assassins attacking Peligro delivering attitude fantastic visuals. From there, it’s space gods and cosmic weirdness. It’s clear writer Carlos Giffoni loves Jack Kirby as the series drips the cosmic craziness.

Twenty years have passed since the events of the previous two volumes, separating the riders from each other. Things start off with, assassins attacking Peligro for reasons unknown. Yet, they are swiftly eliminated in battle when Mono calls him using the stars themselves. Peligro manages to arrive in time to save Mono from the spirt of Maria Lionza. Mono reveals the strange, mystical origin story of the women and the threat her return represents to the universe. Will the riders save the universe again?

The art by Alexis Ziritt is a fantastic blend of psychedelic color schemes and science fiction. It took feels like a love letter to Kirby and psychedelic 70s rock posters. Ziritt shows us the lethality and combat prowess Peligro has retained, as he easily fights off and dispatches his assassins. It sets up the character as one who might be able to take on a god. Ziritt also delivers some fantastic visuals as we learn more about the gods and what threat looms.

Space Riders: Vortex of Darkness #1 is the start of the latest cosmic space opera that is a love letter to comic creator greats while forging its own path.

Review: Olympia #1

Olympia #1

Olympia #1 kicks off a love letter to comics. The debut issue revolves around Elon, a latchkey kid who spends his days alone reading comic books. One day his favorite superhero, Olympian, comes crashing into reality. The concept is something we’ve seen before but there’s a heartfelt aspect to this debut that oozes off of the page.

Created by Tony Pires and Curt Pires, Olympia was created by them as Tony was undergoing treatment for cancer. There’s an earnest meditation on hope and loss in the first issue as we get hints of Elon’s life. The comic also oozes wonder as Elon meets his hero. There’s something for every comic fan to relate to in this debut which makes it all the more impressive. Whether it’s Elon’s personal life or his isolation reading comics, it’s something we’ve experienced.

While the concept, so far, doesn’t feel original, there’s just an enthusiasm that works in the comic. It’s relatable and emotional set up that sucks readers in. It’s also clearly a love letter to comics. From the magical story itself to the art.

The art by Alex Diotto riffs on the classic work of Jack Kirby who’s quoted within the comic. From the colors by Dee Cunniffe to the lettering of Micah Myers there’s a feel of “retro” in so much of the comic. A use of a Kirby crackle to the style of the colors and type of coloring, there’s been a lot of thought to create a look that evokes the classic comics the story loves.

Olympia #1 is the fantastical experience of a reader being drawn into the world they’re engaging in. There’s a meta aspect to the comic as we the reader are sucked into the experience ourselves. It’s a comic you can enjoy for the story and connect on an emotional and personal level. It’s an experience and story we can all relate to in some way.
