Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

andre the giant life and legendWednesdays is new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in. Below are ten suggestions of comics and graphic novels you should spend some extra time checking out.

Top Pick: Andre the Giant: Life & Legend (First Second) – I remember watching wrestler Andrew the Giant growing up in the 80s. This graphic novel is a condensed version of his life touching on the important things that shaped the man, and giving us some insight into such a fascinating individual.

Afterlife with Archie #5 (Archie Comics) – Afterlife with Archie has been an amazing spin on the Archie characters throwing in zombies, death, and anything goes. I never thought I’d be so excited over the Archie characters, but I can’t wait for each issue’s release of this series.

Bee and Puppycat #1 (BOOM! Studios/KaBOOM!) – A new all ages title from KaBOOM!, and imprint of BOOM!. The Kickstarter hit has come to comic form, with a magical tale that’s fun for the whole family.

Fubar: Better Red Than Dead (Alterna Comics) – Another zombie tale, this indie series is a great take on alternate history. Everything I’ve read from these guys have been amazing and I can’t recommend anything they’ve done enough.

Lumberjanes #2 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – The hit series just keeps getting better. This one from BOOM!’s imprint BOOM! Box is about a group of girls at a summer camp where things are a bit… weird. It’s exactly what we need more of in comics.

Rust Vol. 3: Death of Rocket Boy (BOOM! Studios/Archaia) – If you haven’t read the first two Rust graphic novels, you’ve been missing out. This third volume, we’ll hopefully find out a bit more concerning the mysterious Jet. Each volume’s story has been entertaining, and the art is amazing.

Starlight #3 (Image Comics) – Mark Millar’s riff on Flash Gordon has been fantastic each issue so far. He’s hit all the right notes with each issue’s release, mixing in action, while tugging at our heart strings.

This One Summer (First Second) – Another graphic novel from First Second, Rose and Windy are summer friends whose families have visited Awago Beach for as long as they can remember. But this year is different, and they soon find themselves tangled in teen love and family crisis

United States of Murder Inc. #1 (Marvel/Icon) – In this oversized first issue, you will discover a world in which the families of organized crime never lost their stranglehold on the United States. From Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Avon Oeming.

The Walking Dead #127 (Skybound) All Out War has ended…. where do we go from there?

Rust Vol. 3: Death of The Rocket Boy Jets Into Shops This May

Archaia has announced the May debut of Rust Vol. 3: Death of The Rocket Boy, the third installment of Royden Lepp’s exciting all-ages saga. This beautifully bound hardcover continues the story of Jet Jones and the Taylor family as they struggle with a past that’s rushing up to haunt them, and one boy’s struggle to find his place in the world. Rust is currently in development as a feature-length film at 20th Century Fox.

Oz Taylor may know Jet Jones’ secret, but convincing the rest of his family may be harder than he counted on. As Oz plots to rid the Taylor farm of the rocket boy, Jet tries to prove himself to the family that has taken him in, in hopes of finding the home he has searched for so long. However, when shadows of Jet’s past start coming back into his life, he realizes his days of running may be numbered.

Rust Vol. 3: Death of The Rocket Boy arrives in comic shops on May 7th with a cover price of $24.99.

THE WOODS #1

Retail Price: $3.99
Author: James Tynion IV
Artist: Michael Dialynas
Cover Artists: A: Ramón Pérez B: Matthew Woodson C: Paul Duffield (incentive)

WHY WE LOVE IT: As fans of James Tynion IV’s work in the Batman universe (the upcoming BATMAN ETERNAL, RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS), we were eager to publish his first original comic series. THE WOODS gives us that same eerie, small-town horror feel we get whenever we read a Stephen King novel.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: James Tynion IV is a former protege of BATMAN writer Scott Snyder, so you know he’s learned a lot about how to craft a compelling tale. If you’re a fan of teen conspiracy comics like MORNING GLORIES, SHELTERED, and REVIVAL, you’ll immediately be sucked into THE WOODS.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: On October 16, 2013, 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine.

CLIVE BARKER’S NIGHTBREED #1

Retail Price:  $3.99
Authors: Clive Barker and Marc Andreyko
Artist: Piotr Kowalski
Cover Artists: A: Riley Rossmo B: Christopher Mitten (Incentive) C: Mike Mignola (Incentive)

WHY WE LOVE IT: Comics are full of outcast characters, but this is an outcast story, Clive Barker-style. True to this modern horror master’s other work, NIGHTBREED is full of horrifying creatures that captivated us in the 1990 film and live on in this new story. Plus, writer Marc Andreyko is a HUGE fan of NIGHTBREED!

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: Before FABLES, before ONCE UPON A TIME, Clive Barker created a secret town of monsters that live among us. Don’t worry if you’ve never seen the film—Barker and writer Marc Andreyko (MANHUNTER) have crafted a story that all horror fans can enjoy. Add to the mix Piotr Kowalski’s art (MARVEL KNIGHTS: HULK) and this is a story that can’t be missed.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: The Nightbreed is a secret society of monsters and misfits that hide away from humans, but have been a part of this world since time immemorial. Explore both the past and the present of this clandestine tribe, unleashing new secrets and horrors as they fight to coexist with mankind.!

BEE AND PUPPYCAT #1

Imprint: KaBOOM!
Retail Price:  $3.99
Authors: Natasha Allegri and Garrett Jackson
Artist: Natasha Allegri
Cover Artists: A. Natasha Allegri  B. Zac Gorman C. Coleman Engle (Incentive) D. Becky Dreistadt (Incentive)

WHY WE LOVE IT: Because Natasha Allegri is simply amazing. She built up a big fan-following on Tumblr while working on the Adventure Time cartoon, then created gender-swapped characters (Fionna and Cake) that became so popular they put them into the show. Then, she created BEE AND PUPPYCAT and it became the most funded web series project in Kickstarter history. How could we NOT publish it?

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: You might already love it if you’re one of the thousands who supported the Kickstarter campaign, but for those of you just joining us, if you like stories that feature magical girls like SAILOR MOON, MADOKA MAGICA, and POWERPUFF GIRLS, you will enjoy BEE AND PUPPYCAT! It’s a slice-of-life story with a twist, and it has so much comedy and enchantment, you can’t help but be swept up.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: It’s a quirky new take on the magical girl genre with Bee, the forever unemployed main character who can’t seem to figure out life, and the mysterious PuppyCat, a stray…whatever it is…that she stumbled across who has a powerful secret. Fighting bad guys has never been so funny.

THE LAST BROADCAST #1 (OF 7)

Imprint: Archaia
Retail Price: $3.99
Author: André Sirangelo
Artist: Gabriel Iumazark
Cover Artist: Gabriel Iumazark

WHY WE LOVE IT: Ever wonder what’s behind that “No Trespassing” sign? Co-creators André Sirangelo and Gabriel Iumazark take us deep into the renegade world of urbEx (urban exploration). Throw in a decades-old conspiracy involving vaudeville magicians and occult spiritualists and you’ve got us hooked.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: The cunning, daredevil urbEx members of Backbone will win you over as the ragtag, Ocean’s Eleven-style crew of the sewers and abandoned warehouses. Iumazark’s Brazilian/Japanese-fusion indie art style brings edgy energy to every dark corner. And fans of THIEF OF THIEVES and the film NOW YOU SEE ME will find a lot that entices them.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: An urban spelunking group in San Francisco discovers a secret bunker belonging to the long-vanished 1930s stage magician Blackhall the Incredible at the same time as young, out-of-work magician Ivan receives a mysterious package that points him toward a possible conspiracy involving Blackhall’s death in 1934. Both groups dive into the mystery, not yet realizing that it’s about the change their lives forever.

INTERESTING DRUG OGN HC

Retail Price: $24.99
Author: Shaun Manning
Artist: Anna Wieszczyk
Cover Artist: Scott Newman

WHY WE LOVE IT: If you could take a pill and travel back to any time in your life, where would you go? Writer Shaun Manning hooked us with his fresh sci-fi thriller, illuminating the dangers of living in the past.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: If Richard Linklater (A SCANNER DARKLY) directed a season of BREAKING BAD written by J. J. Abrams, it’d probably be pretty close to what Manning and Wieszczyk have built—a tripped-out psychological thriller full of scrappy anti-heroes and some of the most villainous scum of all space and time.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: When a man from the future recruits average retail worker Andrew Smith to help him create a drug that will allow him to travel through time, Andrew thinks he’s found the way to erase all his problems. However, the power of nostalgia proves to be the strongest of drugs, creating an epidemic of addiction with Andrew as its unwitting kingpin.

Review – Rust Vol. 1 Visitor In the Field and Rust Vol. 2 Secrets of the Cell

Rust CoverRust is a high-octane adventure set in the prairie lands of an unknown time. Life on the Taylor family farm was difficult enough before Jet Jones crashes into the barn, chased by a giant decommissioned war robot! Oldest son Roman Taylor struggles to keep his family’s small farm afloat as the area heals from a devastating world war. While the rest of his family may not trust the mysterious boy with the jetpack, Roman believes the secrets of Jet’s past may be the key to their survival.

Royden Lepp with the first volume of rust has set up a first chapter of an interesting alterna-world where mechanoid beings fight in battles. The story, feels like a meditative story of a soldier coming home from war and doing his best to shake off the horrors they endured.

In this case, the soldier is a young boy with a jet pack. A mysterious person who is teased little by little as to their history and past.

This first set up is amazing and it’s no wonder there’s so much accolades given to the graphic novel. The art too is amazing. Just absolutely beautiful to look at, as well as read.

Rust v2 CoverIn this follow-up to the critically acclaimed Rust Vol. 1: Visitor in the Field, the dysfunctional Taylor family continues to rebuild their farm lives after the devastating loss of a recent war and the appearance of the mysterious jet pack-wearing boy, Jet Jones. Jet’s behavior continues to raise youngest brother Oswald’s suspicion, particularly when the appearance of another robot invader puts them all in danger! Rust Vol. 2 is presented in nostalgic sepia tone, bound in high-quality blue cloth, with photographic end papers that set the industrial atmosphere of the title.

The second volume picks up from the first. We get a bit more about Jet, and his mysterious background. The characters get fleshed out a bit more as well, with plot threads for each.

Much like the first volume there’s a melancholy beauty to it all. The story still has that post war feel, of people dealing with the ramifications of home life post a major event. The art is just amazing throughout the book, much like the first. There’s an animated style to it, that makes me want to see a movie on the big screen (but I’d settle for the small screen too).

Rust‘s both volumes are beyond fantastic. A fantasy story that’s as engaging for adults as it is for children with art that’s amazing to look at. It’s one of the rare comics or graphic novels that’s a treat to read as a family or perfect for a parent to give their child to read.

Do yourself a favor and check out both volumes, both can be considered modern classics.

Archaia’s Rust Vol. 2 and Spera Vol. 2 Debut Today as Digital Firsts on comiXology

Archaia Entertainment continues its commitment to digital releases with two new comics debuting today on comiXology, Rust Vol.2 andSpera Vol. 2.

Rust Vol. 2: Secrets of the Cell is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Rust Vol. 1: Visitor in the Field, the debut graphic novel by Royden Lepp. In this volume, the dysfunctional Taylor family continues to rebuild their farm lives after the devastating loss of a recent war, and the appearance of the mysterious jet pack-wearing boy, Jet Jones.  Jet’s behavior continues to raise youngest brother Oswald’s suspicion, particularly when the appearance of another robot invader puts them all in danger! Like its predecessor, Rust Vol. 2 is presented in nostalgic sepia tone to help set the industrial atmosphere of the title. This volume is especially highly anticipated because of the recent announcement that director Joe Cornish (Attack of the Block) has been attached to the Rust film in development at 20th Century Fox. Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, X-Men: First Class) is producing and Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) is scripting.

Spera Vol. 2 is the sequel to the critically acclaimed first volume of Spera, which is based off the original webcomic experiment created by Josh Tierney that brings illustrators together from around the globe to showcase their talents as some of the premier fantasy artists in the industry.  In this volume, exiled princesses Pira and Lono travel to the bustling city of Kotequog to avoid the clutches of Pira’s mother, the Evil Queen. Obtaining jobs as adventurers, the two best friends set out on a series of quests that land them in perhaps more excitement than they’d bargained for. Told in four chapters and a series of stand-alone shorts, each drawn by a different rising talent in comics, Spera Vol. 2 brings the same gorgeous artistry as its debut installment, featuring the works of Giannis Milonogiannis (Old City Blues), Kyla Vanderklugt (Flight), Timothy Weaver (Chivalrous), and Afu Chan (Spera Vol. 1).

The first chapters of Rust Vol. 2: Secrets of the Cell and Spera Vol. 2 debut digitally on comiXology today, available across iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire and the Web, with subsequent chapters releasing every month. The print editions will debut late Fall.
