Studios has revealed that Grim #4, the new ongoing comic book series from writer Stephanie Phillips, artist Flaviano, colorist Rico Renzi, and letterer Tom Napolitano, about a young woman with a macabre job and a mysterious death to solve . . .  has sold out ahead of its release at the distributor level!

In response to the overwhelming support from retailers and fans, BOOM! Studios has announced Grim #4 Second Printing, featuring cover art by series artist Flaviano and available in stores September 21, 2022.

With her very afterlife at stake, Jess must confront a dangerous figure, raising questions about her own death. Now a fugitive, Jess needs answers and is running out of options. Luckily, a new, powerful scythe might be the key to deciphering this entire mystery!

The first issue of Grim is fantastic. The story focuses on Jess, a reaper who doesn’t know how she died and might be able to interact with the living? What’s the deal with that? Why doesn’t her boss want her to know how she died? The mystery deepens in Grim #2 as Jess and her friends decide they want to get some answers.

Writer Stephanie Phillips opens up with a shocking moment as what looks like the Grim Reaper attacks a Día de Los Muertos celebration. It’s an unexpected event that opens up so many questions about this world and its rules.

But, what makes the comic really stand out is Jess and her friends. Phillips has created a character that you feel for. Though she’s fantastical, there’s so much we can relate to. She’s in a job where her boss is an ass. She deals with her work’s idiotic rules. She also is struggling with her past and wants answers that others won’t provide. You feel the frustration and anger she feels. And it’s all justified.

The art from Grim #2 continues to be amazing. Flaviano, colorist Rico Renzi, and letterer Tom Napolitano deliver a world that pops. It’s beautiful and haunting to look at. Each character and moment has such personality that jumps from the page. The art style, color, everything just comes together for a look that feels like it celebrates death like the celebration mentioned above. It’d be so easy to go the horror, dark, and brooding look but the comic stays away from that. Though there’s still a bit of darkness about the comic, it has a feel that glows from the page.

Grim #2 is another fantastic issue of the series. It deepens the questions and raises more while also giving us characters we can either laugh with and/or feel for. It’s a wonderful mystery set in an interesting world. Grim #2 continues a solid new twist on a classic concept.

The Harbinger #8

Faith, Ago, and CiCi battle for the heart of Psiot City against the army of newly activated Psiots while Peter stares down his greatest fears and doubts. Only one Peter can remain when the dust settles — but which one will it be? Find out in The Harbinger #8!

The series finale of The Harbinger isn’t the drag out smackfest that you’re probably expecting. Oh, there’s definitely some series scrapping going on, but the comic is much more focused on the internal struggle of Peter Stanchek to come to terms with who he was and who he can be. It’s a culmination of the series itself, resulting in an awakening of the character as he’s reinvented into a more traditional superhero (because, being honest, Stanchek was a bit of a dick). If Valiant are intending to present Stanchek as a more clear cut hero with a less questionable past, then they’ve essentially succeeded with The Harbinger; while Stanchek acknowledges his past, he’s not defined by it in the eyes of the other characters (not that he ever was) – but he is trying to do things in a way that is significantly different than before.

It’s a conclusion that does end up somewhat satisfying, though given the publisher’s penchant for not always exploring the results of their limited series over the last couple of years, I’m curious what will come from Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing‘s story.

Robbi Rodriguez and Rico Renzi (artist and colourist respectively) and letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou continue to deliver a comic that remains visually exciting, if a touch hectic and confusing at times. There’s a tense oppressiveness to the backgrounds during the comic’s climax, lightening as the night comes to an end and yet never quite losing the tension from the art. It’s an interesting end, and one I’m a fan of.

Kelly, Lanzing et al have been executing this comic on a consistent quality, and The Harbinger #8, the series finale, is no exception to that. The inevitable collected edition is going to be one hell of a story to read all in one go.

The first issue of the series from writer Stephanie Phillips, artist Flaviano, colorist Rico Renzi, and letterer Tom Napolitano, has sold out of the second printing at the distributor level! The debut issue, about a young woman with a macabre job and a mysterious death to solve, is the publisher’s highest ordered creator-owned series of 2022.

In response BOOM! Studios has announced a third printing featuring cover art by series artist Flaviano. It’ll be available on June 15th. The second printing is set to come to stores on June 1st.
