Meet Blaine Abel ,snowmobile mechanic, and part time demonologist. Blaine isn’t too pleased to have the dead walking around his town and he’s about to do something about it. Dana deals with the aftermath of what went down at the farm, as citywide cabin fever escalates. And Em justs wants someone to hit her. Art by Eisner nominated creator, MIKE NORTON!

Pick of the Week – The Victories #1

I love Michael Avon Oeming‘s work and the prospect of him doing an adult take on super heroes is too cool. The fact that it’s Dark Horse lets you know it’ll be a solid product. That’s why The Victories #1 is an easy top pick for the week.

Not long from now, all that will stand between you and evil are the Victories: Six heroes sworn to protect us from crime, corruption, and the dark. As one member cracks down on the violence, he discovers himself touched by a painful past through the physical powers of LINK. Will this trauma cause him to self-destruct or continue the fight?

There’s the usual comparisons it’s being made to (*cough* Watchmen *cough*) that sets a high bar and expectation, but that only makes me want to check it out more. I’m sure this one will be under ordered and over looked at the shop, so do yourself a favor and make sure to grab a copy!

  • The Victories #1 – see above
  • Revival #2 – The first issue blew me away as one of the best comics this year and I’m expecting no less from the second. This is a new take on the undead tale that looks like it’ll infuse more family drama into what’s usually a survivor’s tale.
  • Pathfinder #1 – Jim Zubkavich’s Skullkickers is an amazing fantasy comic. The fact he’s doing this series based off of the popular fantasy game is a smart move. The fact it’s being released the same week as Gen Con is brilliant.
  • Extermination #3 – BOOM! has been kicking ass lately with it’s original works. This is one of those series that’s leading the charge. It’s really what would have happened post-Watchmen if the alien attack was real.
  • Saucer Country #6 – The fact this series is about politics is awesome to me, the reality that it’s a political comic with an X-Files spin makes it a must buy.

Revival #1 Sells Out, Gets 2nd Printing

The first issue of one of the best new series of the year, Revival has sold out at the distributor level. The “rural noir” series is written by Tim Seeley with art by Mike Norton. It will receive a second printing, which will go on sale on August 8 and is available for order now with the Diamond Comics code JUN128065.

A new take on the undead genre, Revival is set in a small Wisconsin town where the dead are returning to their lives as if they’d never left. But as police officer Dana Cypress will discover, they’re not who they used to be.

The second issue of Revival will be in stores on August 15.

It’s easily one of my favorite new comic book series’ of the new year and I can’t recommend it enough.

Revival #1

Story by: Tim Seeley Art By: Mike Norton Cover By: Jenny Frison
Price: $2.99

For one day in rural central Wisconsin, the dead came back to life. Now it’s up to Officer Dana Cypress to deal with the media scrutiny, religious zealots, and government quarantine that has come with them. In a town where the living have to learn to deal with those who are supposed to be dead, Officer Cypress must solve a brutal murder, and everyone, alive or undead, is a suspect. A beautiful “farm noir” that puts a new twist on the zombie genre, created by NYT Bestselling author TIM SEELEY and acclaimed artist MIKE NORTON.

Pick of the Week – The Walking Dead #100

This is the 500 lb. guerrilla in the room (though there’s also an excellent graphic novel Guerrillas Vol. 2 out too). The Walking Dead #100 has to be the pick of the week, not only because it’s a solid series, but because of what it’s doing for the comic book market. This indie book might well be the top book for the month, bringing in non-comic book fans, brought over from the television series. This is the pop culture phenomenon that’s still going and shows no sign of fading. Of all of the comic book properties that have gone big recently, it’s Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead that’s successfully converting non-comic book fans into readers…

  • The Walking Dead #100 – see above
  • The Massive #2 – Brian Wood’s latest series is amazing. There’s mystery and action along with a political message, adding in great art to the mix. This is Wood’s as you’d expect, a must read every month.
  • Revival #1 – I read it and immediately thought this was one of the best new comics of the year. I don’t want to give too much away, but it involves zombies, sort of, but totally original.
  • Richard Stark’s Parker: The Score – I’m a huge crime/noir fan, so this is a no brainer for me.
  • The Strain #6 – Vampires done right by Guillermo Del Toro.

A “Revival” in The Walking Dead

A “REVIVAL” IN THE WALKING DEAD
Preview of new series to run in issue #99

The upcoming Image Comics series REVIVAL has a much different take on the undead from that in THE WALKING DEAD, but their two worlds will exist under one cover as a preview of REVIVAL #1 will appear in the next issue of Robert Kirkman’s bestselling phenomenon.

A three-page preview will be published in THE WALKING DEAD #99, following up on the five-page teaser from Image’s Free Comic Book Day giveaway to give readers an extended look at the debut issue of Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s “rural noir” series. Set in rural Wisconsin, REVIVAL looks at what unfolds in a small town after one day when its dead return to life.

Unlike the cannibalistic, shambling undead of THE WALKING DEAD, however, the dead in REVIVAL look and act much as they did when they were alive. But as Officer Dana Cypress discovers, they aren’t completely who they used to be.

REVIVAL will debut on July 11, 2012 with covers by Jenny Frison and Craig Thompson. A monthly, full-color comic book, each issue will be $2.99 and available same-day on digital platforms.

Life After Death In Revival

LIFE AFTER DEATH IN REVIVAL
New Image series by Seeley and Norton in July

For one day, in one rural community in Wisconsin, the dead returned to life. And not just to life but to their lives as well. Rather than being mindless zombies, the “revived” in the new Image Comics series REVIVAL by Tim Seeley (HACK/SLASH) and Mike Norton (Runaways, Battlepug), seem to be the same people they were before death.

That impression gets put to the test when a murder is discovered and everyone — living and dead — is a suspect. With Wausau quarantined and under government surveillance after the revival and strange sightings of something otherworldly in the woods, isolation and fear will begin to take their toll on the close-knit town.

Seeley and Norton, who both hail from small towns, call REVIVAL a rural noir, and for writer Seeley, it gives him an opportunity to explore another facet of the horror genre.

“Revival is … rooted in psychological horror — the fear of what happens to us when we die, the fear of not being sure if we can trust those closest to us,” he said in an April Comics Bulletin interview.

The environment in REVIVAL is part of creating the tone of existential dread. Norton works with colorist Mark Englert to create barren winter landscapes, reinforcing the themes of life and death.

“I’m excited to try and create an environment for this mystery we’ve built,” said Norton. “Mark and I are working hard to set a mood that hopefully sets the reader on edge. I couldn’t be happier with how this is turning out.”

REVIVAL is a full-color, ongoing comic book series from Image Comics. Its first issue is available for pre-order in the May issue of Previews and will be in stores on July 11. REVIVAL #1 features two covers, one by Jenny Frison (MAY120495) and one by indie comics superstar Craig Thompson (Habibi, Blankets) (MAY120496). It will be supported by a promotional poster shipped to comic book retailers ahead of the series’ first issue.
