Pop Political/Political Pop: Trolling the GOP with Comics

Each week I point out a nice “political” moment in comics, or a geeky moment in politics. It could be an entire comic, a Tweet, release, event or a moment in a comic series, recent or in the past.

This week’s entry is a great case in trolling that had me laughing for quite a long time. The GOP took to Twitter to ask what people’s “top issues” were. Comic writer Ron Marz had a response that was just too perfect to not be the top moment of the week.

But Marz wasn’t the only one to have this idea. Here’s some others that got in on the fun:

Pop Political/Political Pop: The Beetle Vs. the Glass Ceiling (Spoilers)

Welcome to the first Pop Political/Political Pop which will be posted each Friday where I spotlight a “political” moment in comics for the week or a geek moment in politics. It could be an entire comic, a Tweet, release, event or a moment in a comic series, recent or in the past. This week’s first one comes courtesy of The Superior Foes of Spider-Man written by Nick Spencer with art from Rich Ellis.

Warning Spoilers Ahead!

The issue focuses on the new Beetle, who we have learned is the daughter of mob enforcer Tombstone. Janice wants to be a super villain but her dad has other ideas, such as her becoming a lawyer… they can steal way more money and do so legally. But, that doesn’t sit right where she protests that she wants to break the glass ceiling and become the head of a crew and run it the right way.

On being a woman and a career (in crime) she has this to say:

beetle_1Then there’s Janice’s dating life. In an awesome sequence of how she spends her time we get a snapshot of a date and what’s going on through her head.

beetle_2Between the Clinton reference and the X when Republicans are mentioned, I’m guessing Janice might be a Democrat.

The Anti-IP Turn for the GOP Lasts Less than 24 Hours

Though Democrats are generally thought of as the party of “Hollywood” hosting numerous fundraisers are bigwigs’ houses, it shouldn’t be forgotten along with their “free market” and “pro-big business” stances, the Republican party also tends to support strong protections for intellectual property.

That’s why it was interesting on Friday when the conservative Republican Study Committee released a brief with reasonable and smart reform suggestions towards how we handle intellectual property in this country. The report was released to the House Conservative Caucus and various think tanks and laid out “three myths about copyright law” and some ways to go about correcting the broken system.

The paper also suggests four potential solutions:

  1. Statutory damages reform — in other words, saving average folks the legal headaches and crippling fines
  2. Expand fair use
  3. Punish false copyright claims – something that’ll save us from false mass take downs
  4. Heavily limit copyright terms, and create disincentives for renewal – supporting creativity

Late Saturday, the document disappeared, less than 24 hours from when it was posted. A memo was sent around as to the reason.

Subject: RSC Copyright PB

We at the RSC take pride in providing informative analysis of major policy issues and pending legislation that accounts for the range of perspectives held by RSC Members and within the conservative community. Yesterday you received a Policy Brief on copyright law that was published without adequate review within the RSC and failed to meet that standard. Copyright reform would have far-reaching impacts, so it is incredibly important that it be approached with all facts and viewpoints in hand. As the RSC’s Executive Director, I apologize and take full responsibility for this oversight. Enjoy the rest of your weekend and a meaningful Thanksgiving holiday….

Leaks and reports from the inside instead point to something more insidious than “adequate review.” It turns out the RIAA, MPAA and the entertainment bullies lobbyists didn’t take too kindly to the report, demanding it be removed. These are the same organizations that blamed us techies for our unwillingness to discuss these issues during the SOPA/PIPA battles of last year. Here, they’ve stifled an honest look at a system that’s gone completely off the rails and needs to be reformed. Interestingly, a viewpoint and idea track that could help with the Republican’s issue of youth vote. It showed a generational divide on the issue and for once was a policy that sided with the younger generation, as opposed to the Hollywood overlords.

Big Bird Reacts to the Presidential Debate

The first Presidential debate aired on Wednesday and the winner (or loser) of the night was Big Bird after Republican candidate Mitt Romney said he’d cut funding to PBS. Well, the folks at Sesame Street had a good sense of humor about it, tweeting the next day their thoughts.

Come Out and See the Massive Bain Supervillain Congratulate Romney

On Thursday August 30, former Bain Capital CEO Mitt Romney will be officially anointed as the Republican candidate for President of the United States. That same day, a massive, 15-foot-tall supervillain dubbed “Bain” will be unveiled outside Bain Capital HQ on Madison Avenue. Since Romney headed Bain Capital, organizers of the event wanted to honor the achievements of Bain’s “longtime ‘partner in crime’ Willard Mitt Romney.”

In the press release Bain (the supervillain not the company) “gleefully” stated:

I have slashed incomes, smashed jobs, and torn working families to pieces. If Romney wins the election, it will be Dark Night indeed.

The plan is for a hundred workers to be at the event to challenge Bain, many sharing real life stories about their nightmarish experiences working for Bain Capital-owned businesses. Organizers have invited folks to come and help challenge “this sinister plan to take over our Democracy.”

WHO:  The corporate monster known as Bain, confronted by 100 workers, and you!
WHAT: A giant 13″ monster will deliver a speech in front of Bain Capital accompanied by his corporate henchmen.
WHEN: 12:30-1:30pm (Lunch break!)
WHERE: Bain Capital Headquarters 590 Madison (57th and Madison).

The topic of Bain as a comic book villain has been discussed widely this summer as the villain in The Dark Knight Rises was named Bane.  This lead to calls of conspiracy by some. The event is supported by United New York.

Limbaugh Claims Bane and Bain is Too Similar For Coincidences

Bane (comics)Rush Limbaugh went on his radio show and rallied against The Dark Knight Rises, claiming conspiracy since the villain in the movie is named Bane and Mitt Romeny used to run Bain Capital. Limbaugh clearly thinks the American people are too dumb to know the difference.

His exact quote:

Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bain [sic]?

Rush decided to completely ignore the fact that the Batman villain was created in 1993 and chosen as a character in the movie at the latest of 2011. Surely DC Comics and director/writer Christopher Nolan were psychic and knew Mitt Romney would be the Republican nominee for President.

Limbaugh went on to wonder whether this will influence voters:

This movie, the audience is gonna be huge. A lot of people are gonna see the movie, and it’s a lot of brain-dead people, entertainment, the pop culture crowd, and they’re gonna hear Bane in the movie and they’re gonna associate Bain. The thought is that when they start paying attention to the campaign later in the year, and Obama and the Democrats keep talking about Bain, Romney and Bain, that these people will think back to the Batman movie, “Oh, yeah, I know who that is.”  (laughing) There are some people who think it’ll work.  Others think you’re really underestimating the American people to think that will work.

Here’s the actual audio:

Chuck Dixon, the co-creator of Bane responded to ComicBook.com about the controversy:

The idea that there’s some kind of liberal agenda behind the use of Bane in the new movie is silly. I refuted this within hours of the article in the Washington Examiner suggesting that Bane would be tied to Bain Capital and Mitt Romney appearing. Bane was created by me and Graham Nolan and we are lifelong conservatives and as far from left-wing mouthpieces as you are likely to find in comics.

As for his appearance in The Dark Knight Rises, Bane is a force for evil and the destruction of the status quo. He’s far more akin to an Occupy Wall Street type if you’re looking to cast him politically. And if there ever was a Bruce Wayne running for the White House it would have to be Romney.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes Zombies Eat Republicans

Hype Comics have released a “cutting edge” HTML 5 interactive comic, Zombies Eat Republicans (does that count as cannibalism since the zombies are eating their own?).

An up and coming idealistic and conservative Republican press secretary from San Diego gets crash course in survival when the presidential campaign trail takes a sudden unexpected turn as he discovers everything he though he knew about party loyalty and social ties comes into question as he tries to save the country from a zombie attack and potential nuclear annihilation.

The series is described as Ides of March meets Dawn of the Dead packaged in a cross platform HTML 5 format with music, sound effects, and animation. Best of all, it’s interactive all the way. The content is now available for the iPad as a stand-alone web app.

A zombie political comic!?  Hell yes, sign me up.

Alison Bechdel Name Checked in Virginia Protest

Virginia Republicans have been focusing on women WAY more than they should telling women and their doctors what should and shouldn’t be done to their bodies.  Many of those involved are men like State Senator and Republican Caucus Chairman Ryan McDougle who represents the Mechanicsville area.  A protest of sorts have kicked off (with hilarity) on his Facebook page where people are asking the State Senator for medical advice involving their lady parts.  But, what’s the connection to comics?

One protestor who identifies herself as a “really fat and hairy lesbian” name checks well known comic creator Alison Bechdel.  Bechdel might be best known for her long-running comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For and her graphic memoir Fun Home.  Check out the post below which has since been taken down.

The issue of women’s rights and trans-vaginal ultrasounds has hit closer to the comics community with the recent censorship and aborting of this week’s Doonesbury by many newspapers.
