One of my early jobs was as a Special Assistant for Senator John Kerry.  This was during his run for President around 2004.  Tons of random items were sent including some comic book related items.

Around May of 2004 a box made it’s way through security filled with all kinds of Spider-Man goodies.  Sent by Embassy Suites Hotels a letter was included:

Dear Senator Kerry,

For being this nation’s top Democrat, you’re a superhero in our minds!

Because you provided the inspiration for the latest in save-the-day accessories, we’ve enclosed an Embassy Suites Spider-Man 2 Web Pack just for you!  Kids across America will be getting the Web Packs free this summer when they stay at Embassy Suites Hotels.

So pass on the Spider-Man 2 Web Pack and make a superhero out of someone who makes your life just a bit easier, or keep the Web Pack for yourself.  It may just be this summer’s hottest accessory!

Me being the comic geek, of course I begged for the pack.  Below are photos of the items included.

Obama’s Entrepreneurial Exchange Includes Muslim Comic Creator

the 99In Cairo last year President Obama promised to help deepen ties between business leaders, foundations and entrepreneurs in the United States and Muslim communities around the world.  Yesterday he kicked off a two-day Entrepreneurship Summit in Washington, DC.

Announced were new partnerships and initiatives:

We will bring business and social entrepreneurs from Muslim-majority countries to the United States and send their American counterparts to learn from your countries.  Women in technology fields will have the opportunity to come to the United States for internships and professional development.  And since innovation is central to entrepreneurship, we’re creating new exchanges for science teachers

The president cited Dr. Naif al-Mutawa of Kuwait as an example of the progress that’s been made.

His comic books have captured the imagination of so many young people with superheroes who embody the teachings and tolerance of Islam.  After my speech in Cairo, he had a similar idea.  In his comic books, Superman and Batman reached out to their Muslim counterparts.  And I hear they’re making progress, too.

Dr. Al-Mutawa is the creator of THE 99-the first group of superheroes born of an Islamic archetype.  The series follows a nonreligious group of 99 heroes who each personify one of Islam’s attributes of God.

From a 2006 Washington Post article covering the series:

We are creating a pop culture that has an Islamic underpinning or archetype. It is really global, or universal, an amalgam of everything that’s out there,” Al-Mutawa said. None of the characters carries weapons, and they are split evenly between men and women, only a handful of whom cover their hair, he said.

Dr. Al-Mutawa says the series goal is to “save save the children from embracing a culture of violence and death.”

Archie Comics’ Veronica #199 will feature a cameo by the darling of the comic book scene, President Barack Obama.  The story sees Archie, Veronica and friends heading to Washington DC for a school field trip.

In a very impressive burst of speed the kids visit the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Albert Einstein statue, and the National Archives, and name check the FDR and Jefferson Memorials before visiting Lincoln.  They eventually head to the Smithsonian and Capitol before heading to the White House.  All very impressive as visiting these in real life would take you quite a few days.

Veronica crashes the President’s press conference (a White House dinner wasn’t happening?) and gets to ask the President a question.

Veronica – What will be the main component to a full economic recovery?

President Obama – What a great question! Job creation will be a big part of economic recovery! When people are working, the system works!

We’ll do our best to cover this issue as it’s right up their with the fantastic “say no to drugs” issue we covered earlier.  Does the White House/government fund Archie that they can just get these blatant propaganda pieces printed?

Korea’s Educational Comics

The Obama StoryThe Korean Times is reporting that educational comic books are flourishing in Korea as a new way to grab the attention of children and engage teachers and adults.  That wave of educational comics is making it’s way across the seas to here in the United States.

A comic bio series in English published by Dasan Books has been adopted as supplementary textbooks at a U.S. elementary school in New Jersey.

The New Jersey Fort Lee Elementary School announced it will use “The Obama Story,” “The Bill Gates Story” and “The Charles Darwin Story” for history, social studies and bilingual education classes for the second half of this year. The three books are part of the comic biography series aimed at third to sixth graders.

In February 2009 Dasan Books even opened up a branch in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey to enter the U.S. market. Six biography comics have so far been produced, including ones about Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln and Hillary Clinton. By August, volumes on Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and Stephen Hawking will be released.  Their plan is to release 50 bio comics over the next 18 months.

The Obama Story clocks in at 200 pages and targets children ages 8 to 12.  It focuses on his life from his early child hood up to his recent election as President.

The comic biography series is available in some nations in North America and Asia via online bookstores.

Barack Obama is a Guardian of the Globe

First it was Invicible, then Spawn and lastly Rick Grimes, but Image has teased another member of the Guardians of the Globe, a project we’re not so sure what it is.  The latest member is President Barack Obama who has appeared in such image comics as Savage Dragon and Youngblood.

His past appearances in Image comic books make it a possibility he could become a regular character in a comic book, or this is Image mocking Marvel’s recent teaser frenzy.  I guess we’ll just have to wait until August to find out.
