Review: Detective Comics #45

The current and former Batman meet with the Justice League, who are searching for someone with enough detective skills to solve a crime they have been baffled by. All the while, the current Batman is still trying to master being Gotham’s guardian angel.

Detective Comics #45 opens with a very gruesome water themed murder of a group of people in a luxury sweet at a Kings’ game, which is presumably cricket since they mention wickets. This is never built on further but, the brutal and mystical nature of the crime sets up an interesting mystery. The rest of the issue deals with the two Batman and their interactions with the Justice League. The Justice League is trying to see if there is any memory they can pull from the former Batman, Bruce Wayne, to see if he can help them with a case they are working. There is a lot of good characterization in this section, particularly Alfred, as you can see the pain he is in trying to allow Bruce to move on from Batman but, knowing the good he can do under the cowl. After this meeting, the League moves to the new Batman, James Gordon Jr., to seek his help with their dilemma. The dichotomy between the new and old Batman’s interaction with the Justice League is very well done. Bruce, even with his lost memory, is not intimidated or impressed by the Justice League. He treats them as if he was meeting an old friend. This is interesting and hints at his past memory still buried deep in his psyche. James on the other hand is completely star struck and feels almost unworthy to be working with them.

While the characterization is very strong, the narrative itself does drag in the middle. There is a story involving the Mad Hatter but, the urgency of the situation is so low and the resolution so quick and easy, it almost feels like filler so the story can continue to build the mystery of why the Justice League are here. Most of the second act of the comic feels little more than shoehorning in a recognizable Batman villain to meet the bad guy quota of the month.

The artwork is also hit or miss in parts. The action scenes are very solid and well paced. The backgrounds are also very detailed and the lighting accentuates the surroundings appropriately, adding a nice layer of atmosphere. The only real issue arises in certain slower scenes where faces become smudged at a distance. It looks as if a few times they were rushed, leading to some uneven facial proportions.

Overall, the issue a decent filler story to what is building to an interesting cross over between the new Batman and the Justice League. The mystery at the beginning, and the interesting tease at the end of what the Justice League are really trying to solve, keeps Detective Comic a worthy follow going forward. But, it is hard to justify a story where the beginning and end are the only highlights, making this issue a read at best.

Celebrate Batman Day with Snyder, Tynion, Pak, and Tomasi in Baltimore

Come celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Dark Knight on Batman Day, Saturday, September 26th, at the Baltimore Comic-Con! VIP and General Admission Tickets are on sale for the 2015 event, taking place the weekend of September 25-27, 2015 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Baltimore Comic-Con has announced Batman creators Scott Snyder, James Tynion, Greg Pak, and Peter Tomasi.

Scott Snyder began writing DC’s Batman in Detective Comics upon signing exclusively with the publisher, and has continued working with the character ever since. He has written for Batman, numerous one-shots and limited series like Batman: Futures End and Batman: Gates of Gotham, launched Talon, spinning out of the “Court of Owls” arc, and is currently writing the new Batman Eternal. He has also worked on Swamp Thing, The New 52, and Superman Unchained. In 2011, he received Harvey and Eisner Awards for Best New Series for his work on American Vampire, the 2012 Eagle Award for Best Writer, the 2012 Stan Lee Award for Best Writer and Man of the Year, and another Eisner Award in 2014 for Best Limited Series on The Wake. Outside of DC, Snyder has contributed to Wytches and Severed from Image Comics and Marvel Comics’ Iron Man Noir.

James Tynion IV got his start writing back-up stories in the DC Comics’ New 52 Batman title with his former teacher, Scott Snyder. He has published multiple titles under the DC banner, including numerous Batman series like Red Hood and the Outlaws and Batman and Robin, and the DC New 52 title, Talon. He is writer on BOOM! Studios’s The Woods, UFOlogy, and Memetic, and on DC’s Batman Eternal weekly series.

Comics writer (and Rhodes Scholar) Greg Pak has been responsible for much-lauded runs on titles like Marvel’s Incredible Hulk (“Planet Hulk” and “World War Hulk”), Incredible Hercules, X-Men: Magneto Testament, and Red Skull, Dynamite Entertainment’s Battlestar Galactica, Valiant’s Eternal Warrior, and Aspen’s Dead Man’s Run. He has been named Wizard Magazine’s Breakout Talent of the Year, and his stories and characters have won numerous publication accolades as well. You can read Pak’s latest work on Marvel’s Storm, DC Comics’ Action Comics and Superman/Batman, and Dynamite Entertainment’s Turok, Dinosaur Hunter.

Peter Tomasi is a writer and editor best known for his work at DC Comics. He began his career in 1993, editing such titles as Green Lantern, the Batman titles, Aquaman, Hawkman, and JSA before being promoted to Senior Editor in 2003. In 2007, Tomasi decided to move from editing to writing full-time and, in 2010, took over writing Batman and Robin with issue #20. Since the launch of the New 52, Tomasi helmed the new volumes of both Batman and Robin and Green Lantern Corps. His recent work can be found on DC’s Batman: Arkham Knight and Batman and Frankenstein.

Legendary DC Creators Chiang, Fradon, Levitz, and Tomasi Come to Baltimore

Head to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor the weekend of September 25-27, 2015 for the 16th annual Baltimore Comic-Con! Held at the Baltimore Convention Center, the convention has announced the appearance of legendary DC Comics creators Cliff Chiang, Ramona Fradon, Paul Levitz, and Peter Tomasi.

A Harvard graduate with a joint degree in English Literature and Visual Arts, Cliff Chiang began his career as an assistant editor at DC before moving over to the creative side. He has provided art for titles such as Human Target, Beware the Creeper, Green Arrow/Black Canary, and Wonder Woman. You can find his pencils gracing DC Comics covers for Batgirl and Batman Eternal.

Beginning her extensive comics career in the 1950s, Parsons School of Design graduate Ramona Fradon is responsible for artwork in many comics, past and present. She spent much of her comics career at DC Comics working on titles like Adventure Comics, Brave and the Bold, Plastic Man, Freedom Fighters, and a very long run on Super Friends. Moving to comic strips, Fradon took over art duties on Brenda Starr from 1980 until her retirement from the title in 1995. In recent years, she continues to be active on titles like DC’s Convergence: Plastic Man and the Freedom Fighters, Bongo Entertainment’s Spongebob Comics and Annual-Size Super-Giant Swimtacular, and Marvel’s Invaders Now!, Namora, and Girl Comics.

Paul Levitz has been a mainstay at DC Comics since 1972, serving as a writer, editor, and President (2002 – 2009) over the tenure of his career. His name is synonymous with the Legion of Super-Heroes, which he wrote from 1977-1979 and 1981-1989, and he created such notable characters as the Stalker, the Earth-2 Huntress, and Lucien the Librarian. Levitz has since returned to writing the Legion of Super-Heroes for the New 52, as well as the Earth-2 centric book, World’s Finest. Last year, Levitz moved onto the next phase of his career, accepting a Board of Directors position with BOOM! Studios. He is currently writing Dr. Fate and Convergence: World’s Finest Comics for DC Comics.

A New Artist for Justice League. A New Team for Superman/Wonder Woman.

Jason Fabok will be joining writer Geoff Johns as the regular ongoing artist for Justice League starting in November with issue #36. The issue arrives November 19th.

In other creative team news Peter Tomasi and artist Doug Mahnke will take over as the new creative team on Superman/Wonder Woman starting in November with issue #13. That issue hits shelves on November 12th.

DC Comics Announces Robin Rises: Omega

The hunt for Robin is over, but Batman and Ra’s al Ghul continue the family feud.

Batman isn’t quite the same without his sidekick Robin, the last being Damian Wayne who was killed off in the series Batman Inc. in 2013. It looks like it’ll only be a few more months for Batman to be Robin-less, as a new Robin will be taking his side. Who that Robin is, isn’t being said.

Since Damian’s demise, the series Batman and Robin has turned into Batman and... featuring numerous different individuals. The series has featured a “Hunt for Robin” storyline as Batman has being trying to figure out how to revive the boy, while his grandfather, the villain Ra’s al Ghul, has stolen the body as well as his daughter (Damian’s mother) Talia al Ghul’s body.

In July, we get the one-shot Robin Rises: Omega which sees the struggle between Batman and Ra’s al Ghul becoming something bigger with the involvement of forces from Darkseid’s world, Apokolips. One we later DC’s Batman and Robin returns with issue 33 which picks up right after the one-shot and finds Batman in conflict with the Justice League as he decides to pursue the Chaos Shard back to Apokolips. Both are written by Peter Tomasi.

Look for Robin Rises: Omega #1 with art by Andy Kubert and Jonathan Glapion on July 16 and Batman and Robin with art by Patrick Gleason and Mick Gray on July 23.

Review – DC Comics’ Katana #1, Batman #17 and Batman: The Night of Owls

Katana #1

From the pages of Justice League of America and Birds of Prey, Katana gets her own ongoing series! Katana is a former assassin on a noble quest to restore the Outsiders to their former glory. Will she succeed, or will she be overcome by the power of her sword, the SoulTaker?

As a new series from DC Comics, I was very interested in seeing what the first issue would be like, I was very intrigued. Part of that came from the fact that I was completely blank as to who this character is and any of her history. I read some of Birds of Prey, but not enough that I know really anything about Katana and her backstory. With that being the case, one would hope a new series would be new reader friendly, even with a character established in another comic. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case here.

We’re dropped into he story with Katana on a mission. We’re given hints as to all of this, something about a sword, something about honor but it’s not really explained. The sword part is clear enough, but not the whole Outsiders thing.

Then there’s the story itself which attempts to have an Far Eastern style to it. Instead it comes off as choppy and at parts incoherent. It’s a good effort, but falls flat for me. And, we’re given little about the character. There’s not much there to get me to connect with her or care about her journey.

Add in some strange events, a trip to a madam and looking at some girl’s tattoos, a fight at the end which seems out of place. It’s a bit muddled and a mess.

The series tries to do some interesting things, but falls flat for me. Maybe it’s better for fans of the character, but as someone who is essentially a new reader, it fails in the first issue’s two objectives, to get me interested and caught up.

Batman #17

This is it: The stunning conclusion to “Death of the Family”! Who lives? Who dies? Who laughs last? Find out as Batman and The Joker face off one last time!

Scott Snyder has given the Batman franchise energy that’s been missing from the comics for some time. Not only do we have his brilliant introduction of new villains (see below), but there’s also the return of the Joker and his trail of destruction to get at Batman and his family.

Many have suspected that this issue would see the “death” of a character, but they seem to have taken the title of the story arc a bit too literal, not to reveal anything with that. Instead, this latest scheme by the Joker is to attack Batman by driving a wedge between him and the members of his family, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, etc. That’s the “death” Snyder is focused on.

Snyder takes on a topic that’s long debated, and so much more. How interconnected are Batman and the Joker? Does Batman need him more so than his allies? And why hasn’t he killed the Joker by this point?

This isn’t the drag out battle you’d expect. There is that, but this is much more about the relationship and dynamic between the hero and his arch-nemesis foe as well as that same hero and his friends and allies.

As we see in the final pages there’ll be a lot coming down the road as Batman and his family must recover and deal with the Joker’s latest scheme. The Joker’s return kicked the series into an even higher gear, just as Snyder has done for the entire Batman franchise.

With art by Greg Capullo, it’s not just the story that’s the draw. The art is stunning as expected with small details and scenes that just make you linger on the page. It’s an amazing pairing for the finale of what might be one of Batman’s best battles yet with the Joker.

Batman: The Night of Owls

In this new hardcover, evil spreads across Gotham City as Batman’s allies, including Red Robin, Batwing, Robin, Batgirl, the Birds of Prey, Nightwing and even Catwoman find themselves in a battle coming from all sides. The Court of Owls makes its move against justice in this sprawling tale of corruption and violence.

I’ve always been an off and on Batman fan. I’ve never been a huge fan, but I’ve enjoyed reading some of the various runs or story arcs over the years. Lately though, I’ve been a fan, as Batman has been on a roll lately facing amazing villains and giving us classic stories like this one.

The Court of Owls and their assassins, the Talons, have presented a foe for Batman and his allies that feels like their match if not betters. We have an actual challenge that tests the groups’ abilities and in many cases leaves the group hobbling and on the run.

And behind it all the Court of Owls feel like proper Batman villains, manipulating Gotham from the shadows and directing it’s destiny without the citizens knowing. It’s part psychological thriller, part action story.

I fully expected the series to suffer, by being wedged into continuity, but the writers and team have somehow held that issue off, and actually enhanced the Batman mythos.

Before the New 52, I felt a lot of the recent Batman stories haven’t lived up to the hype, here though, it’s as good as they say if not more so. Great villains, great story, great addition to the Batman corner of the DCU.

Baltimore Comic-Con Signals Batman Creators to This Year’s Show

The Baltimore Comic-Con is excited to welcome the creators of DC Comics’ Batman-line to this year’s show! Neal Adams (Batman: Odyssey), Greg Capullo (Batman), David Finch (Batman: The Dark Knight), Scott Snyder (Batman), and Peter Tomasi (Batman and Robin) will all attending the 13^thannual show, taking place the weekend of September 8-9, 2012.

Neal Adams is no stranger to the world of Batman at DC Comics. His work on such DC Comics characters as Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and Green Arrow redefined an era of comics, bringing a photorealistic feel to the pages their respective books. In April of this year, Adams wrapped up writing and drawing the 7-issue second volume of Batman: Odyssey, a self-contained story following up on the first volume that takes place outside of DC’s New 52 continuity.

Greg Capullo began his mainstream comic career in the early ’90s, working on the Marvel titles Quasar, X-Force, and What If? In 1993, he left Marvel for the Image Comics series Spawn, where he took over regular art duties with issue #26. Over the course of his career, Capullo has provided covers and interior art for such Image titles as Spawn, Angela, The Creech, and Haunt. In 2007, his artwork was collected in the hard cover book, The Art of Greg Capullo, published by Image Comics. Most recently, he has handled the art duties on Batman, the New 52 title which launched last September from DC Comics.

Batman: The Dark Knight by Finch David Finch began his career in 1994, working on Image Comics’ Cyberforce. After working at Image through 2001, Finch moved over to Marvel Comics where he worked on such titles as Ultimate X-Men, Wolverine, New Avengers, and Moon Knight. In 2010, he became an exclusive artist for DC Comics, where he began writing and drawing the new ongoing title, Batman: The Dark Knight, which has continued as a second volume following the events of Flashpoint and the start of DC’s New 52.

Scott Snyder, who is currently writing DC’s Batman (with artist Greg Capullo) and Swamp Thing, made a huge impact on the comic industry last year with his ground-breaking work in both series in DC’s New 52. BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – March 7, 2012 –The Baltimore Comic-Con continues working to establish an amazing guest list, and is proud to announce the addition of even more guests!

Baltimore Comic-Con Road Show Continues

Continuing his 2012 road show, this weekend, Baltimore Comic-Con promoter Marc Nathan brings the Baltimore Comic-Con back to his neighbors to the south — Northern Virginia! Marc will be attending the Shoff Baseball & Sports Card Shows & Comic Book & Nonsports Card Show this Sunday, March 11th. Stop by to chat with Marc about the show, and pick up some comics and cards while you’re there! Marc will also have Exhibitor and Artist Alley forms for this years convention on September 8th and 9th.
