Toy Fair 2015: Funko, Heroclix, Mattel, Doctor Who, Firefly, and The Walking Dead

The toy industry’s biggest companies gather at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York City once a year to introduce new products, communicate with buyers, and allow journos like me to sniff around for information crumbs and cool photo ops.

This year’s standout was the Funko booth. Funko’s product line seems endless with licensed Pop! Vinyl figures debuting from 80s staples like Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club, but the coolest thing may have been their Doctor Who pops and the miniature keychain versions that mimic them.

More reAction line figures were also on display from the upcoming George Clooney Disney sci-fi film Tomorrowland, Big Trouble in Little China, Karate Kid, Star Trek, Boondock Saints, and others.

For Funko’s 6″ Legacy Line, they had the Rocketeer on display as well as their Evolve figures, but Firefly got a lingering glance from me. Fans have been waiting a long time for a full 6″ figure line of these big damn heroes and Funko didn’t disappoint.

At the McFarlane booth, we saw new 3.75″ Walking Dead figures and also an addition to their deluxe 10″ figure line with a Michonne that is unpainted and badass.

Here’s a look at the HeroClix booth’s assorted goodies.

Dark Horse’s Game of Thrones line is truly breathtaking.

Here’s some of what Mattel had to offer, including Hot Wheels’ crossover into the world of Star Wars and Marvel, and Princess Power Barbie.

Over at Mezco, new 6″ Sons of Anarchy figures and a deluxe Jax Teller and Walter White in full Heisenberg mode were on display, as well as an immense 24″ Bugs Bunny.

And finally, NECA brought what I believe to be an actual miniaturized version of Danny Devito in his Batman Returns Penguin costume (that figure is disarmingly detailed) as well as a line for Interstellar and other goodies.

So that’s what we have to show from our trip to Toy Fair. The soul bruises from looking at all of these amazing toys that I won’t be able to buy for quite some time will heal over time, but the memories will last a lifetime… or at least a few months.

Kidrobot Joins NECA

In an announcement that is an example of a perfect combination of companies, KR Purchase, LLC (a wholly owned subsidiary of National Entertainment Collectibles Association) and Kidrobot today announced the signing of a definitive agreement under which KR Purchase will acquire Kidrobot. The globally recognized creator of designer vinyl toys joins the growing NECA family of specialty entertainment companies, and will proceed as an artist-run company under the creative direction of Frank Kozik, renowned graphic artist and creator of the Labbit urban vinyl toy line.

Kidrobot will remain headquartered in their Boulder offices, while they are supported by NECA’s (located in Hillside, NJ) vast network of suppliers, creatives and internal team members.

Feast Your Eyes on Our Humongous New York Comic Con 2014 Toy Gallery

The cosplay and the movie stars get a lot of the love when the New York Comic Con rolls into the Jacob Javitz Center but the toy barrage doesn’t get as much attention. And that’s a shame, because if you’re a toy enthusiast the event can feel like the best museum on the planet with thousands of prototypes, new products and existing toys on display behind glass to tantalize and torture because no matter how much you beg, vendors will never let you take them all home.

In the included gallery, there are 250 pictures of some of NYCC’s coolest toys. It would be impossible for me to pick a favorite, but I can tell you that both the Killer Clowns from Outer Space figs and the Chucky figs look scary as hell, Mezco‘s Batman figures are as awesome up close as they look in these pics, and NECA Toys impressed with their 1:6 scale Danny Devito Penguin, their Burt Ward Robin and the rest of their sizable case.

I can also tell you that McFarlane‘s Walking Dead line is taking a great leap forward with the upcoming RV playset and the 10″ deluxe Rick Grimes figure that I was unfortunately unable to get a good picture of since I found myself by the McFarlane booth when it was swarmed by fans who wanted to get a look at Todd McFarlane himself, who was making an appearance.

The QMx booth also drew some crowds, but I’m pretty sure that that was all about the astonishing film scale (1:124) replica of Serenity from the film of the same name and Firefly. Luckily, we got some super up-close shots of the $7,495 “toy” and a look inside its interiors, which feature miniature versions of the Firefly cast. We’ve also got some great pics of QMx’s other Firefly products, which are damn shiny.

The Batman 1966 TV Series Burt Ward as Robin 1/4 Scale Action Figure

The long-awaited companion piece to last year’s #1 selling Adam West Batman figure from the 1966 Batman TV series has arrived! NECA has revealed a brand new 1/4 scale rendition of Burt Ward as Robin.

For close to 50 years the Batman TV show has delighted audiences, and this fall for the first time ever the complete series will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray! To celebrate this monumental event we have created this 17″ tall poseable figure of the Boy Wonder featuring Burt Ward’s likeness.

Robin comes with a fabric cape, 6 interchangeable hands, Batarang, communicator, and more. Super-poseable and loaded with detail, this Robin is a must-have for fans of the classic Batman series.

NECA has revealed that this figure is limited to one production run only, so get it while you can. The figure will be released in November.

New news is good news!

Are you rich? Do you like expensive toys? Are you Bruce Wayne? Then this is the item for you! Hot Toys has released more detailed info on their 1/12th scale The Bat Collectible Sets. Available in two flavours, “normal” and Deluxe, The Bat comes loaded with some cool features and accessories all scaled to the 6 inch figures.

The normal set includes:

While I’m not the biggest fan of The Dark Knight Rises (easily the weakest of the 3), these sets are pretty cool. The regular set will run ya $690, while the Deluxe comes in at a cool $780. Start saving your pennies bat-fans! Pre-orders are up at Sideshow Collectibles.

In another baffling move from Hasbro, another Walgreens exclusive has been announced. This time you’ll be heading to a pharmacy to buy a Star Wars Black Series Prototype Boba Fett. A repaint of the original release, this time deco’d in his white prototype armour. He’ll be avialble this fall and can be pre-ordered at SDCC if you live no where near a Walgreens. Both completely viable options for your’s truly, a dweller North beyond the boarder.

Sideshow has yet another piece of awesome up their sleeve, with the Dr. Doom Premium Format Figure. Measuring just under two feet tall on the base, and featuring interchangeable classic and modern versions of his mask, a fabric costume, and armored battle-suit. The Exclusive edition of includes an additional swap-out hand armed with a cosmic ray gun.

Both versions are priced at $389.99. Pre-orders start June 26th a Sideshow Collectibles.

And finally……”Get away from her you b@#%h!” and get onto my shelf! NECA has finally take the wraps of the long awaited Queen Alien, and it’s a doozy.

Preview: Toy News Round-Up

Wow, lots of stuff popped up lately. Had some things going on in life and I got a little behind. Hell of a week for that to happen. So here’s the round-up.

Mattel showed off the first ever Star Wars themed Hot Wheels vehicle. This toy will be at SDCC in July. The roadster is designed to look like Darth Vader and comes packaged inside his own lightsaber. The package features red glowing lights, lightsaber sounds and Vader’s trademark heavy breathing.

NECA reveals the next 18″ Jager from Pacific Rim…….Battle-Damaged Gipsy Danger. Gipsy comes ready for battle with the famous Plasma Cannon that lights up AND swivels. The LED lights in the chest and head from the original version make a return. This behemoth is ready to defend the world this September for about $100.

Bandai has taken the wraps off a great new addition to the S.H. Figuarts series……….Star Wars! The first figures out of the gate in 2015 look to be a Stormtrooper and Dath Vader himself. It’s pretty apparent, from my other posts, just how much I love the S.H Figuarts line, and getting Star Wars figures now makes me extremely happy. I can’t wait for a side-by-side review with the Black Series Stormtrooper and Vader. Based on these early pictures, I’ve got a feeling who the winner will be, do you?

In more S.H. Figuarts news, Bandai gives a first look at the Mega Man Zero star, Zero. Loaded with weapons from the series, Zero comes with; Z-Saber, the laser pistol Buster Shot, and the Triple Rod. Zero also gets a shield accessory and the traditional interchangeable expressions and hands. Zero hits in November for around $50.

At the Tokyo Toy Show, Takara displayed the first painted version of the latest Masterpiece Transformer, Ultra Magnus. The quality of the figure looks great, as does the scale. He does look a little bulky at the shoulders and legs. More looks are needed at this figure before judgment is passed. But wow, Ultra Magnus!

To close things off, an entry into the WTF?!?! category.

Factory Entertainment announced this piece for SDCC: Archer – Sterling Archer Tuxedo Action Figure. No words, I have no words. This is a variant of the regular Archer figure that will be released and it looks like THIS?!?! Were they going for a retro style here or trying to mimic the look of the show? Either way, they appear to have missed the mark. I was worried about these when they debuted, but they were early, and I assumed they would improve, they have not. This is a big dissapointment to Archer fans who were looking forward to great figures from a great show. Thankfully, there’s only 1500 of these and if you want to toss away $25 they’ll be available at SDCC in July.

Preview: NECA’s Next Retro Style Video Game Figure

NECA is at it again with a wonderful figure re-paint designed to look like a classic video game. Following the tradition of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Robocop, and the Predator, the next 8-bit re-do comes in the form of the original people’s champion………ROCKY BALBOA!

ROCKY! ROCKY! ROCKY! ROCKY!

Re-pianted to give a more angular, shaded, and low-res look, this Rocky emulates the character as featured in the 1987 NES game Rocky (a VERY difficult game btw). The figure also includes a cloth American flag. Which could be used on any other Rocky figure you have to make a pretty cool post-fight display.

NECA unveiled their final SDCC ’14 exclusive figure today, and it’s a Predator named Ahab!!!!!!

This guy will be featured in a new Dark Horse comic series, Fire and Stone, debuting in October.

The story description of this new Predator: In his prime, Ahab took deadly trophies from countless worlds, his scars a proud record of glorious battle. Now an elder of his tribe, he leaves small game to the next generation as he looks to his final hunt. Following a lifelong obsession, Ahab searches for a creature more formidable than any Predator has ever faced before.

Hmmmmm, seems oddly familiar? I can’t wait for the Ishmael Predator!

Only 5000 of these will be available worldwide at a price of $30. Ahab features a removable backpack, removable mask and a spear staff weapon.

NECA also showed of the first final production shots of the 12″ (24″ Head-to-Tail) Godzilla figure from the new film. The 6″ (12″ Head-to-Tail) is already in stores and his big brother version ships in July. I’m waiting to see both in the wild first before deciding which one to get. I just feel the larger scale will show off the sculpting better. The paint looks more vibrant on the 12″ figure too. Plus the larger features that famous Godzilla roar. Check the specs below:

I kind of wish the tail was articulated like the smaller version. I’m a little nervous about bendy parts on toys. I always worry about wear and tear when positioning. The price point on the King of the Monsters is expected to be between $50 and $60 when it arrives later this summer.

Toy Stories (PLUS) – May 27th 2014

A pleasant little update from the good people over NECA toys this week. The looooooooooong awaited Portal 2: P-Body and Atlas figures are shipping out this week and should be arriving in stores very soon. I’ve been eagerly awaiting these two since they debuted at New York Toy Fair back in what seems like 1956. This pair have been a long time coming and from the new photos, they look to be worth the wait. They both feature LED lights, on themselves, as well as their portal devices (like the previously released Chell). These two will make a great addition to a Half Life or video game display. Keep your eye’s peeled.

And now for something a little different………..Thoughts on Toys.

We know DC Collectibles has been making some great figures lately, and a wide variety of characters are getting a plastic doppelganger. It’s very rare that DCC will churn out a repeat character (unless that character is BATMAN) in a short time frame. That’s why Deathstroke never got a figure in the Identity Crisis line because of his earlier Teen Titans figure. This is going to change a little with Nightwing this year.

We’ve already seen the release of the “Designer Series” figure, but later this year DCC will release another Nightwing. Although each figure has some minor costume changes, and each is a different sculpt, they both represent the character at virtually the same point. There’s no battle damage from Forever Evil, the colour schemes are the same, as are the weapons. It just strikes me as odd that DC chose this route, with this character. Following Forever Evil “Nightwing” doesn’t even exist anymore and his book is simply called “Grayson” now. Both figures do have positive and negatives and I do appreciate the ability to choose a specific artist version of a character or a “standard” version. Will this be something we see from DCC and the Designer Series in the future?

Outside of re-releases (with new paint, and maybe a new head sculpt) DCC hasn’t released a duplicate figure. I enjoy the wide variety of figures being released as opposed the “crank out a Batman or Superman variation every 2 months“. I would like to see this continue. I for one will more than likely be getting the regular New52 version of Nightwing coming later this year. I just prefer the more slender sculpt on the body, even though the Designer Series head sculpt and white eyes are better. What are your thoughts? Toy Stories – Monday May 15th, 2014

This is what I get for doing home renos for a few days and getting an early night. So many cool things happened. Let’s take a look at a few……

The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be………R.E.M.

NECA announced their Series 3 of The Simpsons 25th Anniversary Guest Stars line of figures. This series features Penn & Teller, Bret “The Hitman” Hart, Stephen King, Leonard Nimoy, and R.E.M. Series 3 should be hitting shelves sometime this June. At last my dreams of a Survivor Series match between the Bret Hart and The Who vs Xena and R.E.M. can become a reality. I have odd dreams.

Looks like Shadow Thief was already chosen.

DC Collectibles unveiled a fan poll to determine which character from the New 52 will become a new action figure. Take a look at the poll over at DC Collectibles website and cast your vote. I’m torn between The Demon and Earth 2 Dr. Fate………..and have we seen that Hawkman before? Nope new figure to show off too!!!! Check out a nicer image and the evolution of the figure HERE. Gotta say, looks really nice!

90’s strike back.

And we have word on that mysterious X-Men Infinite Legends teaser from a few days ago. Looks like the series will be a Toys R Us exclusive arriving sometime this year. The series includes: Unmasked Wolverine, Uncanny X-Men Cyclops, X-Men Storm, Classic Magneto, and Stryfe. The B.A.F for series is Jubilee and a modern-ish costume. Wish she was in her 90’s gear or have a variant vampire head available. These look really nice, especially the Magneto, who was in desperate need of an update.
