DC Collectibles Enters the New Decade as DC Direct and Lots of New Upcoming Releases

A Facebook page name was the first tip-off but it’s official! DC Collectibles, known for its iconic lines of collectibles, statues and action figures, directly from the source, is returning to the name on which it was founded, DC Direct. The move cements the focus of the line of collectibles as committed to DC material and authenticity of being truly “from the source.”

During New York Toy Fair, DC Direct will display its striking new 2020 action figures and statues in its booth. This year’s lineup will feature an all-new statue line based on The Joker, a revamped Artist Alley line, and additions to expand its best-selling action figure and statue lines including DC Essentials, Batman Black & White, Harley Quinn Red, White & Black, DC Designer Series, DC Bombshells, and more.

The Batman Black & White and Harley Quinn Red, White & Black statue series lines have been a success so it’s only fitting that The Joker gets his own statue line to be based on the iconic images of the Super-Villain from the DC Comics pages. The series will appropriately be named The Joker Clown Prince of Crime. The inaugural figure is based on the iconic image of The Joker by Brian Bolland. Follow Bolland will be statues by Jim Lee with a classic comic Joker design that really portrays how creepy the jokester is with oversized features such as hands and feet and Lee Bermejo, perhaps one of the most popular comic illustrators associated with The Joker. Bermejo has designed a statue that will look amazing on any shelf as its displayed in hues of purple and green.

The highly collectible DC Artists Alley line will also undergo a revamp. The line will feature more premium format designs and figures. First out of the gate, The Joker by Brandt Peters. Peters uses his design talents to bring The Joker to life by combining his antique, Victorian style for a truly unique take on the villain. Additional artists joining the DC Artists Alley line include, Brittney Lee, a popular artist who used her talent in paper-craft-style art to create a new take on the famous villainess Catwoman, Patrick Ballesteros, who uses childlike nostalgia and imagination, to bring one back to their younger years will provide his take on the Bat Family including Deathstroke and Robin, and Zach Heffelfinger will provide his take on the Dark Knight. As a character designer for Nickelodeon on SpongeBob SquarePants, Heffelfinger brings about a sense of nostalgia with his stylistic art.

Additional statues and figures debuting at the show include Deadshot, the last character in the Batman Rogues Gallery Multi-Part Statue; A DC Bombshells: Poison Ivy Holiday Variant; new Batman Black & White and Harley Quinn Red, White & Black statues and DC Essentials and Batman The Adventures Continueaction figures.

Mythos Studios Announces the Creative Team Behind Michael Turner’s Fathom and Soulfire Films

Mythos Studios has announced the creative teams that will be overseeing three films that are in pre-production, two of which are based on comic creator Michael Turner‘s work.

Fathom and Soulfire are both in production and are being worked on together with a focus on a shared universe including crossover events and sequels. Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander will handle both films.

Kristin Fore will be writing the screenplay for Fathom. The story is about Aspen Mathews who’s a marine biologist and discovers she’s a member of an underwater species. The comic was first published in 1998.

Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt will adapt the screenplay for Soulfire. That series debuted in 2003. The story follows Malikai, an orphan who discovers he’s the link to a forgotten age of magic and goes on a quest to restore magic with the help of Grace, a winged goddess.

Mythos Studios was founded by Marvel Studios’ founding chairman David Maisel as well as Scooter Braun, a former manager of such musicians as Justin Bieber, Kanye West, and Ariana Grande. The company in March 2018 invested 50% in the comic publisher Aspen Studios who are the ones behind Fathom and Soulfire.

Soulfire Volume 8 #1 Coming This June!

Aspen Comics has recently announced they will be streamlining their 2019 publishing schedule and focusing on their core titles beginning this Spring and Summer. The publisher will be releasing Michael Turner’s Soulfire Volume 8 #1 this summer with an all-new artistic team, beginning with the first issue release on June 26th.

Following the summer kick-off of their first major release, Michael Turner’s Fathom, on May 15th with the new creative team and retailer-friendly ordering of their special edition variants, the release of Michael Turner’s Soulfire the following month. Both of the aforementioned titles will feature special edition variants for retailers to order with zero restrictions on the ordering quantity.

Veteran Soulfire scribe J.T. Krul returns to team up with rising star newcomers Raffaele Forté and colorist Valentina Taddeo. This new volume will feature direct edition covers by Forté and Soulfire creator, the late Michael Turner. Also, more covers will be available from artists such as Jordan Gunderson, Alex Konat and more to be revealed.

The publisher has announced they will be offering Soulfire #1 Retailer Special Edition variant covers with no restrictions on order quantity by creator Michael Turner and more. This is the first time Aspen has provided retailers the chance to order their incentive variants with no restrictions and encourages fans to check with their local comic book store to pre-order.

Aspen Celebrates 15 Years of Fathom with a New Volume from Vince Hernanez, Mauricio Campetella, and Peter Steigerwald

On the heels of their partnership with Mythos Studios to develop the animated feature film for Michael Turner’s Fathom, as well as the ambitious fifteen-year anniversary campaign last year, Aspen Comics will be releasing Fathom #1 this summer with an all new creative team on May 15th.

The publisher is streamlining their release of titles in 2019 to feature their core and flagship series in an effort to maintain the standard of quality the publisher is known for throughout the industry.

Mythos Studios Buys Into Aspen with an Eye on Movies

Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Ariana Grande, and Aspen Comics? Scooter Braun has managed some of the biggest names in music and now he has set his sights on comics and movies. Partnering with David Maisel (who helped found Marvel Studios) the two have formed Mythos Studios. Their goal is to make their own hit comic book movie franchises, both live action and animated.

Mythos is looking to mine Aspen Comics‘ world of characters to build its franchises. The company has a 50 percent stake in the comic publisher which was founded by Michael Turner who passed away in 2008.

This isn’t the first time Braun has been involved in movies, he was an executive producer on The Giver and Burden, as well as documentaries about his musical talent. Maisel helped launched Marvel Studios getting the company to self-finance their own films which now dominate theaters worldwide and was an executive producer for the first five films. After he left, he continued his success developing such films as The Angry Birds which earned $350 million worldwide. Braun will fund Mythos’s development costs for multiple years through his holding company, Ithaca. Braun also brings with him his connection to talent while Maisel brings the movie know-how.

Currently there’s several projects being adapted including Soulfire and Fathom. The latter had a rumored film that never happened starring Megan Fox. Mythos is also looking towards original material as well as projects in the public domain.

Aspen Goes Back to Its Roots for its 15-Year Anniversary in 2018

Aspen Comics, the comic book publishing house founded in 2003 by the late superstar artist Michael Turner, will be celebrating its fifteen-year anniversary in 2018. To celebrate, the publisher is planning a yearlong initiative featuring a return to many of its classic properties. Three of Aspen’s flagship titles will be highlighting significant milestones, with Michael Turner’s Fathom and Soulfire’s twenty and fifteen year anniversary respectively, and Executive Assistant: Iris’ ten-year anniversary as well.

The publisher plans to focus on less variant covers as well as a reduced price on new jumping-on point issues including 25-cent primer issues and $1.50 zero issues.

Aspen will also be debuting a 4-page Aspen Mascots story premiering each month in the back of every new Aspen Comics release. The Aspen Mascots stories will be written by Vince Hernandez with art by Joie Foster and will feature Aspen’s lovable band of mascots, creatures and other fun Aspen critters in all-ages bonus content storylines.

In addition to the Aspen Primers, Legacy, and Aspen Mascot bonus content stories, the publisher has announced an Aspen Wave 1 of new properties and titles to debut as their first releases of the new year, in addition to the creative teams:

JANUARY:

Aspen will kick off their anniversary year in January with the release of the Aspen Legacy #1 issue, a yearbook-style offering showcasing everything from Aspen’s past, present and future, and collects a thorough look inside and behind-the-scenes of Aspen Comics. Aspen Legacy #1 will be released on January 17th and will be offered for only 15-cents with art by various Aspen alumni artists including Michael Turner, Talent Caldwell, Micah Gunnell, Marcus To, Francis Manapul and more.

FEBRUARY:

PortalBound #0 written by Mark Roslan and Gabe Carrasco with art by Alex Arizmendi and Wes Hartman is a new sci-fi/fantasy/action-adventure mini-series slated for five issues debuting February 7th with covers by Arizmendi and Adam Archer. PortalBound #0 will be offered for $1.50.

Charismagic Volume 3 #1 debuts on February 14th written by Vince Hernandez with art by Harvey Tolibao and Federico Blee with covers by Tolibao and Khary Randolph. Volume 3 is supported by the release of Charismagic Volume 2 in trade paperback form, as well as a re-offering of Charismagic Volume 1 as part of the continued release of the action-adventure/fantasy series.

Shrugged Volume 3 debuts on February 21st written by Frank Mastromauro with art by André Risso and Beth Sotelo with covers by Risso and Micah Gunnell. Shrugged is supported by the release of Shrugged Volume 2 in trade paperback form, as well as a re-offering of Shrugged Volume 1 in February as well.

For new readers unfamiliar with Aspen’s catalogue of titles, the publisher will be offering 25-cent Aspen Primer issues throughout the year for its classic titles: Michael Turner’s Fathom and Soulfire, Executive Assistant: Iris, Charismagic, Dellec, Jirni, No World and Shrugged.

Aspen Announces Their First Wave of San Diego Comic-Con Exclusives

Aspen Comics has released their first wave of Comic Con International: San Diego exclusives available only available at the Aspen Comics Booth #2320 this July 20-23rd. The publisher will be releasing their SDCC 2017 exclusives in three waves beginning this week with the first reveal of their new Michael Turner exclusive covers for DC Comics.

Aspen Comics will feature an exclusive Supergirl #1 Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald variant edition, including three new covers by the late superstar artist and strictly limited to 1000 copies (available only as a set of all three) beginning on Preview Night, July 19th, at Comic Con and on www.AspenStore.com while supplies last. These covers will only be available for purchase at the Aspen Comics Booth and on www.AspenStore.com (limit 1 per household on the website).

Aspen Comics and Marvel Team Up Again For Weapon X #1 Michael Turner Variant

Following their first successful team-up last year for the release of The Amazing Spider-Man #15 and coinciding with the release of the highly-anticipated film release of Logan this weekend, Aspen Comics and Marvel have collaborated once again for an all-new Michael Turner exclusive cover for this April’s Weapon X #1 release. Michael Turner created these images in 2007 for a proposed Wolverine mini-series, a collaboration between Michael and his long time friend Jeph Loeb. Now, Michael Turner’s beautiful pencils, as well as Peter Steigerwald’s amazing colors are available exclusively through AspenStore.com!

Aspen Comics ECCC 2017 Exclusives and Debut of the Aspen Bundle

Aspen Comics has revealed their full line-up of exclusive items available at this year’s Emerald City Comicon 2017 at the Aspen Comics Booth #1501. Aspen will be launching their all-new Aspen YOU-niverse Bundle package that will include several exclusive items in addition to others debuting in the bundle.

The first ever, all-new Aspen Comics YOU-niverse Bundle will include an exclusive Michael Turner’s Fathom #1 line-art variant cover by creator Michael Turner.
