Review: Mech Cadet #5

After the Sharg’s violent return, the Sky Corps Central Command scrambles to deal with the crisis but not before grounding Stanford, Park, and the others. The cadets continue to train under Skip in secret but it’s not long before the Sharg strike again—this time, in a form mankind has never seen before.

If you’re not reading Mech Cadet, you’re missing out. Take Pacific Rim and mix it with Top Gun, but with kids, and you’ve got the series by writer Greg Pak and artist Takeshi Miyazawa.

Mech Cadet #5 kicks off the second arc of the series with the kids finding out their fate after disobeying orders and taking on the Sharg.

Things go generally how you’d expect and not so much. There’s surprises here as to their punishment and also some solid twists and turns. The kids need to learn to be a team. They need to deal with their punishment and there’s lots of scheming going on as well. The series as usual mixes all-ages fun with some layers.

The art as always is fantastic with a mix of East and Western influences. The style looks great with a cartoonish look mixed with some awesome looking robots. There’s some things we’ve seen elsewhere, like the Sharg themselves, but the look flows well and it’s a great mix of art and story.

The series is one of my favorite out there and if you haven’t checked it out, the trade is out this week as well. Mech Cadet Yu has an amazing amount of depth for an all-ages series and whether you want to take it on one level as giants robots versus aliens and on another it’s about class. No matter how you take it, it’s entertaining and a must get.

Top Pick: Curse Words Vol. 2 TP (Image) – Charles Soule and Ryan Browne have done such a great job on this book. For Christmas I like to buy graphic novels as gifts, and the first volume of this series made the list. If you like goofy titles with some great art, look no further than this series featuring Wizord, the wizard with an attitude, and a talking koala.

Mister Miracle #6 (DC Comics) – Tom King and Mitch Gerads have done a great job on this book, and doing it in their own original way. This is a totally different take on the Scott Free you may (or may not) know. This gets us halfway through the 12 issue limited series.

Royal City #9 (Image) – A return to the form that lets Lemire shine. Here he does the art, and the writing and both go so well together. This series touches on small town America, loss, and real family problems that are relatable.

Top Pick: Phoenix Resurrection #3 (Marvel) – This has been a trippy ride so far, and I am living for every second of it. The nods to X-Men dead and gone, mentions of past writers from X-Men history and a story that has you second guessing everything equals a story that I haven’t really seen before, and I can’t wait for my girl to FINALLY make her return to the Marvel Universe and to see where she’s going to go from there.

Avengers #675 (Marvel) – Something BIG must be happening to bring all the Avengers teams together to face it. I’m excited to see all the teams join forces and curious to see what this new cosmic threat will bring. Maybe erase Secret Empire from our memories? One can hope.

X-Men Blue #19 (Marvel) – The last couple of issues have been fun, seeing the team bounce through different periods of time, meeting alternate versions of X-Men and being told they’re the reason the various times are so dark and bleak. Is it really the fault of the X-Men? I’m still pointing my finger at the furry blue guy who brought them all through time in the first place. But, still curious to see where this all leads.

X-Men Gold Annual #1 (Marvel) – Excalibur reunion! The cover is enough to get me excited for this annual. And look, Brian and Megan are parents, awwww!

Top Pick: Mech Cadet Yu #5 (BOOM! Studios) – The fact this series has been turned into an ongoing has me beyond excited. On its surface this series is giant robots being piloted by kids, but underneath there’s also a story about class and privilege. A fantastic all ages series that’s one of my favorites being published today.

Action Comics #995 (DC Comics) – Booster Gold and Superman running around time! So far the storyline has had a great retro vibe to it all and there’s the march to issue #1000! Really exciting to see where this series and character is going.

Catalyst Prime: Accell Vol. 2 #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – My favorite of the Catalyst Prime comics is their take on the classic speedster superhero. There’s just something fun about it all and how it’s differing itself from all of the others out there.

Coyotes #3 (Image Comics) – A multilayered story that could be about a young girl fighting werewolves or it could be a deeper story about the exploitation of women and immigrants and fighting against the abuse they endure.

Old Man Hawkeye #1 (Marvel) – I loved the character in the original story and have been wonder how this miniseries will hold up. We’ll find out soon I guess and I’m excited to revisit this future world.

Top Pick: Ninja-K #1 (Valiant) – I’m beyond excited for this. I’ve had this on my radar for some time, and even with the (currently unread at the time of this writing) review copy sat in my inbox I am still super excited to get the physical copy on Wednesday from my LCS.

Bloodshot Salvation #3 (Valiant) – So… see above.

Fence #1 (BOOM! Studios) – I used to be a half decent fencer, but I’m old and slow now. Still, a comic about fencing? Why not? Sometimes you don’t want to read about superheroes all the time, and this looks to be an interesting change of pace.

Top Pick: Fence #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Read it already an absolutely loved the first issue which reminded me a lot of some of the manga I’ve read that’s focused on sports. The issue is fun, relatable, with a great introduction to the characters an the world. It also sets up everything to come really well.

Bolivar (BOOM! Studios/Archaia) – I’m raving about this graphic novel with its cute story and art that is jaw dropping. This is a must get and perfect holiday gift.

East of West #35 (Image Comics) – I’m all in with this series when it comes to the world and mythology and each issue has me excited to see what comes next.

Mech Cadet Yu #4 (BOOM! Studios) – This series is giant robots and kid pilots battling aliens. It’s awesome in other words and a series that’s enjoyable no matter your age. There’s a lot of layers and things to chew on along with an action packed story.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #14 (Marvel) – My favorite Star Wars comic right now. Aphra is the best addition to the universe in a long time and it’s basically a sci-fi Indiana Jones.

Due to popular demand, BOOM! Studios has announced Mech Cadet Yu Vol. 1 Discover Now Edition, arriving exclusively in comics shops January 2018. Collecting the first four issues of the acclaimed all-new series from the superstar team of writer Greg Pak and artist Takeshi Miyazawa, Mech Cadet Yu Vol. 1 Discover Now Edition is the perfect jumping-on point for the series, which begins a new arc in January’s Mech Cadet Yu #5.

Mech Cadet Yu is the story of Stanford Yu, a young janitor who is unexpectedly chosen to join the storied ranks of the Mech Cadets of the Sky Corps Academy. Once a year, giant robots from outer space come to Earth to bond with the cadets to defend the world from terrifying aliens known as the Sharg. After he unintentionally bonds with an off-course robot, Yu is thrown into training, hoping to prove he is worthy of being there at all.

The Discover Now Edition of the collection will be available exclusively in comic shops for four months and is strictly limited to its initial print run and never reprinted. Top Pick: Ragman #1 (DC Comics) – I’ve always been fond of this character: a Jewish vigilante preying on Gotham City criminals by harnessing the strength of the Souls of the Guilty as a redemptive force to help them reach heaven. Originally created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert back in 1976, he is now reimagined by the capable Ray Fawkes and Inaki Miranda.

Catalyst Prime Noble Vol 2 #1 (Lion Forge Comics) – Thus begins the second arc as Noble continues his quest to uncover the truth, but spurns his wife who must now fight to get the husband she knew back. It is penned by Brandon Thomas with art by Roger Robinson; and this week features a brilliant cover by Khary Randoph and Emilio Lopez!

Dying and the Dead #6 (Image Comics) – For a while I thought Hickman and Bodenheim had given up on this project. I’m glad they continued with the series centered on an aged commando team doing the dirty work for a secretive sect of Immortals.

BabyTeeth #5 (AfterShock Comics) – Donny Cates has been belting hit after hit, and this is no exception. marines, assassins, mom, and her newborn Antichrist are the frontliners in this well written action-packed series, featuring art by Garry Brown.

Grass Kings #8 (BOOM! Studios) – A well-crafted mystery series set in a fringe town of outcasts, produced by Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins.

Top Pick: Dark Knights: Metal #3 (DC Comics) – This event/story has been so crazy that it just works. Even the tie in books with Gotham Resistance, and all of the other Dark Knights has kept me excited and interested in something that’s creepy, bizarre, and fun. I am throwing up the devil horns on this one! Highly recommended!

Mister Miracle #3 (DC Comics) – Tom King is one of the best writers around, and most people would agree with that. Now add in an older and fun Kirby character and much like King did with Vision, throw him into something new, and you have an edge of your seat formula. King does vulnerable very good, and this has been fantastic so far.

Despicable Deadpool #287 (Marvel) – Deadpool vs. Cable, or at least that’s what this book is making us think. It’s a classic fight between two over the top characters that are getting ready to buddy up or fight in the Deadpool 2 movie. The solicits say Deadpool is turning back into more of a villain, since he has been down on his luck, and has made some pretty major mistakes lately. I am hyped for this one.

Royal City #6 (Image Comics) – Jeff Lemire is one of the best creators in comics right now. I love his writing. I love his art, and I love this series. This follows a family that while it plays with some supernatural elements, it feels very real, and full of emotions. The first trade released just recently, so grab it and see what all the fuss is about.

Animosity Vol. 2 TP (AfterShock Comics) – If you haven’t read this series, then now is the time to grab both trades. It’s a post-apocalyptic world run by animals who can speak. Some want peace, some want revenge, and the humans must do what they can to survive. It’s a lot of fun, and sad at times, but it is an awesome concept and execution.

Top Pick: Falcon #1 (Marvel) – Marvel Legacy has been kicking off and it’ll be interesting to see where this character and series goes, especially considering the entire concept of Captain America has been tarnished and Sam Wilson’s own recent series.

Fighting American #1 (Titan Comics) – The classic character is back and it’s great to see it. I have no idea what to expect but this is one I’ve been looking forward to reading.

Ghost Money #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – The first two issues have been intriguing as all the money gained from 9/11 is explored. Interesting plot and things have really been picking up.

Lazaretto #2 (BOOM! Studios) – A horror comic featuring college students quarantined in a dorm at a college. It’s claustrophobic in all the right ways.

Mech Cadet Yu #3 (BOOM! Studios) – Kids and giant robots! Greg Pak’s writing is absolutely amazing and the art is a really interesting style that enhances the youthful feel of the book. Absolutely love this series.
