Review: Wonder Woman: Rebirth #1

WWREB Cv1_dsAfter suffering an unimaginable loss, Wonder Woman must rebuild her mission as Earth’s ultimate protector and champion.

Writer Greg Rucka returns to Wonder Woman with Wonder Woman: Rebirth which feels like a Christopher Nolan mind trip… on acid.

There’s been a lot of changes to Wonder Woman during the New 52. Her relationship to Superman. Her origin. Her being the God of War. A lot of changes. A lot of controversy.

Wonder Woman: Rebirth seems to lay to first steps to walking a lot of those changes back, but unless you’re aware of what’s happened, I’m not quite sure you’d care a whole lot.

WWREB_1_2At its core, this issue feels like a horror comic with its spiral into the “truth” as the issue progresses, it’s a strange tone for the issue, but makes sense in some ways for the narrative and what’s presented. I wonder if the series when it launches will continue this tone or be a bit lighter of a vibe that makes Legend of Wonder Woman work so well.

You can see what was being gone for, but I’m not quite sure it’s vital enough that one needs to get this issue, or even should. At it’s core, it calls into question whats come before, and there’s nothing laid out that jumps out to me that’s vital for when the series kicks off in a few weeks.

The art duties are split between Matthew Clark and Liam Sharp and it’s very noticeable. There’s an odd shift that definitely caught me off guard and took me out of the story for a bit. There’s definitely some nice images, I’m thinking of a splash page with a shattered image and different incarnations of Wonder Woman. But, overall there’s some issues with the character design and how she looks.

The issue sets up what’s to come, but it’s tone feels so odd for a Wonder Woman comic and just feels like it’s goal is to call into question the entirety of the New 52 Wonder Woman run. I trust Rucka, but this issue definitely has me less excited for his run.

The only thing John Shaft wanted was a simple case, one where no one got hurt or killed. He figured working as a consultant on a low budget film would be easy money. He was wrong… dead wrong.
