This November sees the newest release for WizKids‘ Dice Masters, Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool. The set is focused on Deadpool’s world including the X-Men and Weapon X, but the set also includes some other familiar characters and the first appearance of the Inhumans team affiliation. I’ll be reviewing a card a day until the set’s release in a few weeks. But, beyond discussing the cards and how they fit into the Dice Masters game, I’ll also focus on the characters themselves and if the card reflects their comic history.

Next up is Angel Dust: Chicagoan, the common version of the card.

Art: Shawn Martinbrough, Morlocks #1

Comic origin: Created by writer Geoff Johns and artist Shawn Martinbrough in 2002, Angel Dust was a mutant who ran away to join the Chicago faction of the Morlocks. She later returned home to her parents after helping the Morlocks and to her surprise her parents accepted her even though she was a mutant.

She lost her powers after the events of the 2005 “Decimation” storyline.

Angel Dust has the power to increase her adrenaline which gives her superhuman strength for a short time period. Her strength can vary depending on those levels and along with her strength her speed, agility, and stamina, are enhanced.

Live action version: Gina Carano played the character in 2016’s Deadpool.

Card playability: It’s interesting the character is a Hydra/Villain affiliation, though I don’t know enough about the characters so there may be an easy explanation for that. With a 5 FIST to purchase and combined fielding costs of 5 the die is kind of expensive to purchase and field, so her use will be in teams that stick around for a while. The card is pretty playable though. Combine it with other cards that force your opponents to block and you have a character that can grow really large easily. Also add in Overcrush and you’ve got a character that can deal some heavy damage too.

Card vs. Comic: Yes. Yes. Yes. The variation in attack and defense values perfectly reflect the character’s varying strength.

Final Thoughts: This card could be fun to play with, especially with a team that’s built around controlling who blocks and getting Overcrush out there. In fact… I might need to put one together.

Next up is Agent X: Earth-2 Counterpart, the rare version of the card.

Art: Alvin Lee, Agent X #1

Comic origin: Created by writer Gail Simone and artist Alvin Lee in 2002, Agent X was spun out of Deadpool which at the time wasn’t selling well and got his own mini-series that lasted for 15 issues.

The character’s real name is Nijo (also known as Alex Hayden) who’s an assassin and mercenary who blamed Deadpool for his brother’s death. There’s a story that I can’t even wrap up that involves the character wanting to be the best mercenary there was and may or not actually being Deadpool. Nijo/Alex was eventually trained by Taskmaster.

His abilities include a regenerative healing factor, foreign chemical resistance, disease immunity, extended longevity, telepathic immunity, superhuman strength, superhuman stamina, superhuman agility, and superhuman reflexes.

Live action version: None

Card playability: This is an interesting one. Being able to draw a die is useful and there’s a lot of new ways to redirect or gain life. This can be great to get crucial dice and/or a way to get rid of Sidekick dice too. Also being able to field a 5A for 1 die is pretty solid, so you also get a decent attacker out of it all.

Card vs. Comic: I’m not sure there’s a big connection between the card’s ability and the character. Being able to get needed supplies fits a bit, but that’s about it.

Final Thoughts: This card could be pretty useful in a game and I can see it being added to a few decks. It’s not a fame changing card, since there’s so many ways to draw dice now, but it’ll be interesting to see how it fits in to the rest of the set which may change my final thougts on the card’s use.

First up is Agent Carter: Answered the Call, the rare version of the card.

Art: Renaud Mu, Agent Carter: SHIELD 50th Anniversary (2015) #1 Variant

Comic origin: Margaret “Peggy: Carter first appeared in 1966 in Tales of Suspense #77 Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. As a teenager, the character joins the French Resistance and becomes a fighter who serves alongside Captain America. The two fall in love, but an exploding shell gives her amnesia.

In the comics, she also was originally the older sister of Sharon Carter, but that was later retconned and she became Sharon’s aunt.

In other comic versions, she marries Captain America in “House of M” when he isn’t frozen and the Earth-65 version she is the long-lived director of S.H.I.E.L.D. filling the roll of Nick Fury… including an eye patch!

Live action version: Hayley Atwell portrayed the character in various films including Captain America: The First Avenger and her own show Marvel’s Agent Carter.

Card playability: This card is absolutely playable! A cheap 2 FIST to purchase with only a 1 total cost to field, the card and die is cheap, cheap, cheap! While the die is active, it increases the cost to field Sidekick dice by 1. This is a huge ability as popular meta teams like Bard rely on fielding Sidekicks, so anything to increase the cost to field them will slow things down. Her cheap cost too means it’s a die that will be purchased early and fielded quickly. But, there’s a drawback too. That increased cost applies to you too, so hopefully your own team won’t rely on Sidekicks too much. This is a card that’ll be sought after and absolutely played.

Card vs. Comic: I think the card’s text and even the stats are a good reflection of the character. While she’s good with guns, I always saw her more defensive than offensive, but as part of the French Resistance, she harried the enemy so being an irritant and increasing the cost of Sidekicks is a good way to reflect that.

Final Thoughts: This card is a MUST GET. I think it’ll shake up the meta a lot and you’ll see entire teams built around it.
