Dynamite Announces Vampirella #1969

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the upcoming release of Vampirella #1969, a 48-page one-shot special that celebrates over 45 years of the vampire heroine’s advenutres in horror and fantasy. The over-sized issue celebrates the heady days of the character’s earliest appearances with contributions from a roster of all-star writers and artists, including: Nancy Collins and Fritz Casas, Eric Trautmann and Brett Weldele, Phil Hester and Jethro Morales, Mark Rahner and Colton Worley, and David Walker and Aneke. Vampirella #1969 will debut in November and feature three covers: one by Robert Hack in retro-style dress, a cover by Jack Jadson, and a rare edition featuring Hack’s artwork in black-and-white, much like the artwork of the original Vampirella magazine.

Several of the Vampirella #1969 contributors have shared their thoughts on the upcoming celebratory event:

Nancy A. Collins: “When I was asked to contribute a story to Vampirella #1969, I went back to see exactly what was going on the month the first issue of Vampirella hit the stands. As it turns out, the police were searching for the killers responsible for the Tate-LaBianca murders while America was dealing with the aftershocks, both physical and cultural, of Hurricane Camille, Woodstock, and Neil Armstrong walking on the moon. My story has classic-era Vampirella landing in a Hollywood that bears a closer resemblance to the reality of the time than what existed in her goofy/campy early adventures.”

Phil Hester: “I was three years old when Vampirella debuted. It wasn’t until I was thirteen that I became very, very interested in the character, especially that life-sized poster I had saved my paper route money to buy. But beyond the undeniable visual impact of Vampirella, there was always a core decency to her character that burned brightly even amid the dark, horror-oriented themes of her stories. She was always, well – good. Even though she was a vampire, and was always mixed up with creepy characters and monstrous villains, she somehow maintained this kind of purity that I found really refreshing in a culture awash with anti-heroes. I hope my story harkens back to that classic Vampirella heroism.”

Eric Trautmann: “One of the things that made me most eager about contributing to Vampirella #1969 was the opportunity to work more in the (pardon the pun) same vein as the Warren-era material – short, punchy, atmospheric, without the need to build a longer continuity. Adding to that the opportunity to see the script realized by an artist like Brett Weldele made this one the best Vampirella experiences I’ve had to date.”

David F. Walker: “I first discovered Vampirella back in the 1970s, when it was a magazine that I wasn’t allowed to look at – too much sex and violence for a little kid. And so for me, Vampirella has always represented something a bit dangerous, or at least the possibility of something dangerous. Those old stories were daring and outrageous, and that’s what I tried to capture when I wrote my contribution to this book.”

A raven-haired heroine, Varmpiella remains – even after four-and-a-half decades of publication – one of the comic industry’s leading ladies, due in no small part to Dynamite Entertainment’s stewardship of the character. Since Vampirella’s very healthy resurgence in 2010, Dynamite has published two volumes of a monthly series, several miniseries and one-shot specials, and crossovers with multimedia brands and comic book peers. The Vampirella franchise is a haven for writers and artists with a penchant for the macabre.

Vampirella #1969 will be shipping in November 2015.

It’s on! Boomstick vs. fangs! The battle you’ve always wanted to see between Ash and Vampirella – sort of. Make that Ash and a monstrously transformed Vampi, as they tear through the medieval castle! Hilarious slapstick action and chills aplenty from Mark Rahner (Vampirella Bites, Army of Darkness/Reanimator) and Jethro Morales!

Review: Vampirella/Army of Darkness #1

VampiAOD01-Cov-A-SeeleyTwo iconic legends of the horror genre (Ash from Army of Darkness and Vampirella)  are now facing off in one of the coolest titles coming out this summer from Dynamite publications; Vampirella/Army of Darkness. This story takes place in an almost retcon like universe of The Army of Darkness movie (if you haven’t seen it, shame on you!). Where our reader is introduced to Ash, after he has won the battle against the book of the dead. However, in the retcon like twist Ash is finding himself being put to the test against another great evil the medieval age has to offer; The Unholy Vampire!

Now I don’t want to give too much away because as a horror fan, I really dug this first issue. It was completely written for fans of both Army of Darkness and Vampirella by Mark Rahner. Rahner has written stories for both these characters before in there own separate titles. So, it only makes sense that Dynamite would choose him to write for this title. And what a way to kick it off too. Rahner has definitely set it up for these two horror hero icons to take the genre further in this book. Rahner definitely knows all of Ash’s and Vampirella’s mannerisms and ticks to such a degree, that fans keep coming back to both icon’s respective titles whenever Mark Rahner is writing for them. So I’d say were in for fun ride with this title folks.

The only downside of this book that kind of irked me was the pacing. Some of the pages didn’t flow like a Rahner story normally would when dealing with these two characters. However, it wasn’t so bad that it would kill it for the reader.  Like I said before, it is a good read and a great way to open up this particular story. Just be warned some of the pages will leave you feeling like it was, at times a little rushed to get to the payoff.

Whats a cool plus for this book is the cover done by Tim Seely that plays some quick wit humor with Ash looking like he is wanting to flirt with Vampirella as she is shopping at S-Mart. Which, when looking at both characters is a great cover idea. It allows the reader to get a sense of the dark humor that they will soon read without giving too much away and it pays homage to the some of the best things about both characters (Vampirella the dark seductive vampire hero and Ash the minimum wage store clerk turned horror/action hero).

So in all what do I rate Vampirella/Army of Darkness?

  1. Craptastic
  2. Die Hard Fans Only
  3. Awesome Sauce
  4. Brilliantly Fantastic
  5. Epic…

Awesome Sauce!

During his time trapped in the England of 1300 A.D., Ash listened to the terrified primitive screwheads tell of a horrific flying Deadite similar to the one he blasted out of the air when he arrived – but much deadlier. At the same time, a raven-haired temptress wants to give him some sugar – as his last meal! The horror mash-up you’ve been waiting for, from Mark Rahner (Twilight Zone, Army of Darkness/Reanimator) and Jethro Morales (Hack/Slash)… full of bloody chainsaws, fanged vixens, demon possessions, and boomsticks aplenty!

Review: Vampirella/Army of Darkness #1

VampiAOD01-Cov-A-SeeleyIn the different worlds of supernatural within comics in general, right now seems to be a great time for the genre, as it has enjoyed a resurgence of the last few years, as some properties have lend their talents to the TV screen, i.e. Walking Dead , iZombie, True Blood and the upcoming Lucifer. It is only to be expected that comics reach back into the movie and TV worlds, and want to explore what they have to offer as well.

The comics medium offers more to character development, as they can explore different story arcs without worrying about the costs of special effects and location scouting, as the only thing an artist would have to do is research and draw what he saw. So when I heard that Dynamite decided to mash-up their two most successful horror genre comics, I was excited to see the results.

Written by Mark Rahner and illustrated by Jeff Morales, the story centers on Ash from Evil Dead fame and everyone’s favorite vampire, Vampirella. The story opens with Ash falling though another time vortex, with his “boom stick” and chainsaw, landing in another period within medieval times, as the people of this land are facing a vampire threat, they have deemed Ash, the “chosen one”. As he is picked as their savior, he stays in the king’s castle, dining with knights, where majority of the first issue takes place and his interaction with them. The action switches when one of the knights is killed mysteriously, which sets up the reader for the other part of this mashup.

Rahner deftly captures Ash’s sarcastic sense of humor within these first few pages, while transporting the reader to a time and place that would be hilariously confused by him. Morales illustrations throughout, exemplifies why he is master at his art.

Overall, it is an intriguing beginning to a comic that sure looks like it will not disappoint.

Vampirella/Army of Darkness Pits Ash, the Chosen One, Against the Horror Heroine

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the July release of Vampirella/Army of Darkness #1, the first issue in a four-issue miniseries that sets Ash Williams, the hard-luck hero of the Army of Darkness franchise, against the classic horror hostess-turned-heroine Vampirella, for the first time in comic history. Written by Mark Rahner and featuring artwork by Jethro Morales, the first issue will be offered with multiple collectible covers by industry heavyweights Tim Seeley and Jae Lee, plus a “Cute” variant by Tony Fleecs exclusively available to subscription customers.

The events of Vampirella/Army of Darkness take place during Ash Williams’ time trapped in the England of 1300 A.D. When the terrified, primitive screwheads approach the Chosen One with tales of a horrific flying Deadite — one similar to the one he blasted out of the air when first arrived, but much deadlier — Ash sets out with his boomstick and chainsaw to protect his adopted people. At the same time, a raven-haired temptress wants to give him some sugar… as his last meal!

Vampirella / Army of Darkness #1 will be released in July and available for purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Dynamite Digital, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.
